eBay SLOOOW due to reading "include.ebaystatic.com"

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Mon Jun 16, 2008 8:39 am

Since a few days, browsing eBay has become tedious and very slow.
This seems to be due to their reading include.ebaystatic.com for every page.
Putting this addie in my hosts file has no effect.
Anybody else experiencing this slow-down?
Any solutions to bypass this annoyance  (other than not browsing eBay)?

I was intermittently also experiencing it yesterday but eBay access has been working better today although there is a slight (about 200ms) delay while waiting for a connection with include.ebaystatic.com. This is with Firefox 2 and now version 3.

I've had that problem off and on for a few months. Mostly off. I've searched and searched for a solution and found nothing to help.

This page on eBay itself has some ideas for IE users:

A suggestion I found on another site:
I've had this problem for weeks with ebay and facebook. I found a reference somewhere that suggested that ebay would hang at include.ebaystatic.com if the Java plug-in was out of date. I updated mine from the control panel, and ebay and facebook both work fine now.
But I think this page:
http://quidnunc.net/~highpointe/firefoxtweak.htm
May have the best advice. It says in part:
You may have noticed that signing in to eBay can sometimes, depending on your security applications and Internet connection, be a study in patience... This is because the login pages are encrypted... Your browser and eBay's server must first agree to the encryption "secret handshake", meaning there are a few HTTP requests and responses before anything begins to happen at all... Then the entire content of the login page is sent encrypted, the images, the JavaScript downloads, the HTML, etc... In addition to most eBay JS being bloated, if your security application intercepts the page download for inspection, it must decrypt/encrypt the contents before your browser gets it.
Hope some of this helps; I'll be experimenting myself once I get home tonight...

Hey Mike, thanks a bunch. Updating my Sun Java did the trick!
FF (still on V2.0.0.14) runs smooth again.
