HP UJ822B DVD WRITER in T4x
HP UJ822B DVD WRITER in T4x
Hi!
I got a HP UJ822B 9.5mm height DVD writer.
It is a wery cheap drive in Hungary (about 75USD).
I checked the drives, and find two differences.
1: the locking mechanism is not the same. But it can change it to one from the CDRW/DVD player. 2 little screw holds it.
2: the docking connector is not the same.
It is in the right place, but HP has female, IBM ha male connector.
I managed to remove the panels from the drives, it seems to have the
same PCB wiring, so the 2 connector is interchangeable!!!!!!
So I decided to kill my unused DVD rom to use a new DVD writer.
The DVD writer and the DVD rom is about 100USD.
I will change the connectors ASAP.
Did you hear something about using HP drives in IBM thinkpads?

If IBM's true intent to put hard drive checks on the T43p is to ensure laboratory tested PATA drives work through their SATA<->PATA onboard chip, then optical drives don't need to worry; they should go straight into the PATA interface of the chipset.sugo wrote:Hopefully IBM didn't put funky check in bios for the optical drive.

I ran into the male/female connectors in a 812 I got out of a Japanese Toshiba laptop (Dynabook CX1 Series)...it did not fit the IBM socket... Could you explain a little more in detail how you took one drive apart to get the piece out to fit the 822? It may help the person who unknowingly (I didn't know either until he bought it) bought the drive from me.

Hi!
Managed to remove the needed connector from a 2nd hdd adapter. The resoldering is not an easy work, but managed to do.
Unfortunately the drive not working in the ultrabay slim. The drive is good, if I take in a CD it start to spinning and reading, but neither the BIOS, nor the windows does not recognize the drive.
It seems to be some firmware related problem, like IBM BIOS does not like the HP firmware in the drive.
I try to get an IBM firmware for the drive.
I can find the schematics of the wiring diagram of the 2nd hdd adapter. I have a 3.5">>2.5" Hdd adapter too. With these I can find a way to connect the drive to the normal 40 pin IDE connector. In this way I can see if the drive is working, because the Bios of my desktop PC does not contain any drive specific locks like IBM bios.
Is it possible that my T41 (with the latest BIOS and embedded controller firmware) cannot use this type of drive, because UJ822B is a T43 DVD-RW drive? Is there a way to see the PCI ID-s and the drives strings in the BIOS?
I will post a reply ASAP.

I always thought that all drives were recognized in Thinkpads...never had a problem....are you sure that your soldering was done properly? Did you try the drive with the 2.5-->3.5 adapter in a desktop yet?
