I'm seeing BSOD when using standby and hibernates. It seems to be related to entering with the AC adapter connected and removing the AC and returning to use on battery power.

The updater threw a bunch of updates, including a BIOS update and some power manager/driver updates.

Anyone else experienced this?

Folks here will offer you some good advise if you mention your machine (MT will be great), operating system and the "bunch" of updates you applied along with the BIOS update to your machine.

T60p, XP. The updates were from the Lenovo update manager, included a video driver update and a power manager update that I recall, but I can't remember all of them.

In addition, the system now wipes out my home page whenever I restart (either voluntarily or involuntarily).

I tried to do a rollback using windows restore but it won't even do that because of some other errors.

Guess I'll have to "refresh windows" by restoring and then apply the updates again - what a pain.

The BSOD generates a specific error message, noting that as best you can and posting it may also help get you an answer.

As you mention that you did a power manager update, and your problem seems connected to whether you disconnect the AC power while the machine is suspended, I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the power manager driver/update first.

When you say the system wipes out your home page, what do you mean? A "home page" refers to something on a web site or your browser settings, are you referring to using Active Desktop? Or do you mean it changes the Desktop settings on your computer?

I mean it resets my home page to the default for each browser installed. I have foxnews as my home page. After I revert, Firefox comes back to its default search, and Explorer reverts to msn.com

Just a possibility, but check out the settings of Access Connections if you are using it. It is possible to set a default home page for a connection profile in Access Connections and if one got set in there, it could be what is causing your browsers home page to change.

I had the same problem on my T60, after installation (via System update) of the latest ATI video driver (version 8.442.3-080103a1-057754C, release date 2008/01/31). Altough yours is a T60p, it seems that the same update applies to both models, so maybe this will help you.

Reinstalling the previous version of the driver solved the problem, no more BSODs since then.

If you use System update, you should still find the previous version of the ATI installer in:

C:\Program files\lenovo\System Update\session

Just look inside the folders containing at least 80 MB until you find the right one.

Bingo! One mystery solved! The home page was being reset because I set up a new wireless profile for our visit to friends place in Vegas.

Now if I can knock down the BSOD. The pointer to the video driver is high on my list. This is the second video driver I will have had problems with. The last rev before this one screwed up resolution.

And double bingo. I couldn't go to the previous one because it would mess up the display on the T60 coming out of standby too - it always came back at 1024x768. So I remembered that I had the old version still locked up in Software Installer and put in 8.362.

This makes two driver releases in a row that are busted... Sigh...

I own a T43p running XP Pro+SP2 and performed a system update
last week, which I usually do only once a year. After the update I
started experiencing crashes, whenever I tried to put my computer
in standby mode by Fn+F4 or by closing my laptop's lid.

Talked to Lenovo Tech and they helped me narrow down the
problem to my ATI Display Driver, but they couldn't help me
with the crashes. You can make sure that the problem is linked
to your ATI Display by going into Event Viewer (Right Click
My Computer, Select Manage, then Select Application under Event
Viewer) and looking for an event with name ati2mtag flagged with
a red x around the time you experienced the crash.

It is a long story about the research that followed, but here is
what fixed the problem on my laptop:

1) I made sure that I had the latest versions of "Thinkpad Power
Management Driver" and "Thinkpad Power Manager" by checking
with Lenovo Support Website. Sometimes system updates misses
one of these.

2) I then downloaded the latest ATI display driver for my machine
from Lenovo Support Website but didn't install it yet.

3) Then I "CLEANLY" uninstalled all ATI related drivers using
instructions on the website:

The instructions require the use of two freely available
programs: DriverCleaner Pro and CCleaner.

4) Then I installed the latest ATI display driver.

5) My unexplained crashes were gone and I have been able to
take my laptop in and out of stand-by mode successfully many
times.

I hope that this will be helpful for some people.

I was getting the BSOD from ati2mtag.sys bugcheck 1000007f {d,0,0,0} with driver date of 1/3/2008. I also had the hibernate problem (BSOD coming out of hibernate, especially with the AC adapter plugged in.

Hibernate was fixed by rolling the bios to most current 2.22.

Continued getting problem with the ati driver (every 20 minutes) until I rolled it back to 8.383.1.1.3-070621a2-050878c-lenovo. That driver is doing some quirky screen updates, but hasn't crashed for 2 hours now. Will try reinstalling the newer driver in a day or so.

I thought this might have been a hardware problem, and sent the machine to IBM for warranty service. I was told ntf - couldn't get it to blue screen.

I think I'm going to turn off thinkpad update, it looks like it has caused a few people grief.

not that it could not, it will just crash after doing an automatic system update..

ok, for real, i never let system updater do anything..
if my thinkpads are running well, i don't try to fix something thats not broken..

I went through the whole process mentioned by pointfielder above (including buying the Driver Cleaner software), and it made no difference at all.

I have .NET framework version 1.1 (because that's what was installed when the machine arrived) - but the machine wasn't new, so no telling. I'll see if it will let me install version 2.0 later today.

I did roll back XP Pro SP3, having had serious problems with SP3 on my desktop machine. I don't allow any automatic updates on my machines, on the principle "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Removing SP3 didn't sort it either.

Does anyone know the root cause and proper fix for this EDID thing? Should I remove the ATI drivers and use native Windows ones?

i used to get those in my event log, too, after i updated my t43's ati drivers to the most recent on the ibm/lenovo site: 8.383.1.1.3-070621a2-051036C.

i recently upgraded the hdd and used the recovery set to reimage. at this point, i've left the ati drivers at 'factory' state: 8.133-050510a-024101C-IBM and haven't one 'ati2mtag' errors yet. nor have i had any video issues using this driver version, so i'm gonna leave it there.

I couldn't find a download for that, but a German-language forum that Google popped up suggested downloading the Catalyst drivers and gave a link to the 8-7-Mobile variant.

I downloaded and installed those, and my problems are over! No more EDID error messages.

Search for Computerbase.de, then for Catalyst and then mobile 8-7 and download the file. Ignore the German-language stuff if it means nowt to you.

For those with the problem (and I found lots in Google who'd not been given a steer to a solution) there are two fixes in here. I'm happy.
