I love ThinkPads. Give me the nipple, or give me death!

I've had every model 600, 600E, 600X, T20, T23, T30 (garbage), T40, T42, and a T60. It's good to be in IT

Pfizer is now buying everybody the T61p. This thing is really solid, and built much better than the T60.

But 1920 x 1200 on a 15" LCD is absolutely ridiculous! And dropping down to something more reasonable such as 1280x800 obviously makes everything look muddy.

WTH are laptop vendors thinking? And why the hell did Lenovo kill off the non-widescreen displays? I am obviously not happy with ThinkPads anymore.

Because everyone else is going wide which makes it more expensive for Lenovo to continue to make standard screens. There are people who would pay a premium to have a standard screen, but they're a small group. In my experience most people don't care about standard vs wide.

It's pretty easy to change to "Large Fonts" or even "Extra Large Fonts" in XP settings, or right click the desktop and change font size in Vista.

Also, plenty of other setting available in Windows Color And Appearance.

This allows the user to keep then native resolution for the machine but enlarge the objects on the screen.

Maybe you already know the above tips....just thought I would offer them in case they were forgotten.

Thanks MGO. Yeah I've raised the DPI setting, web pages are set to Larger, and I'm using the 'Large' theme and things are much better.

But there's no consitency when switching between apps. Everything will be visisble on one web page, then all of a sudden the next one will be tiny because they don't use fonts that IE or Firefox can change, like typing out this reply in the tiny window. Even stupid things like Notepad or Paint.

Ugh.... Lenovo is losing me. The only thing keeping loyal is the superiority of Nipple over touchpads.

Each to his own. I love my T61p 1920 x 1200.

I like my R50p 1600 x 1200 IPS screen even more for some uses. It is brighter in my brightly lit work environment.

1920 x 1200 IPS would suit me fine, even with the decreased height of the 1920 x 1200 compared to the 1600 x 1200.

That isn't entirely lenovo's fault. IBM actually shipped some special purpose R5x and T4x series laptops with 2048x1536 resolution screens. They've been known to have excellent high-resolution screens.

I have a T43 with the 1400x 1050 screen. It's too fine for ofice use (where I can't put the laptop near me since it blocks other stuff I need), but it's great for travelling since I can use it up close. In the office, the laptop is connected to two 21" 1600x1200 LCDs via a Port Replicator II(with the laptop lid closed). I think the T6x series with nVidia and ATI chipsets can do the same thing.

This is why I ordered one with 1680x1050 native res. It's freakin awesome. Plus gaming is much better since the native isn't so high.

I have a T61p with Vista Business and a 1400x1050 screen. I set it to 1280x1024 with 120 DPI fonts and it looks fine. It uses the NVidia scaling. There is a tiny amount of fuzziness on alternate lines but it doesn't cause me any problem. Most of the time, everything looks clear. ... JDH

The key is to remember that there are choices, and Lenovo did not arbitrarily ship ThinkPads with 1920 x 1200 resolution to your company. Therefore this is _not_ a reflection on Lenovo. They simply build what is in demand. After all someone chose to order these for your company and I'm sure it was not Lenovo.

Personally for the type of work I do, I find the 15" 1600x1200 4:3 ratio display on my T60p delightful. For general purpose work at home I use a 15" T60 1400x1050 and enjoy that as well.

While you may already have done this, I would encourage you to go to: Display Properties / Settings Tab / Advanced / Display / DPI settings / Custom settings.... and drag the slider back and forth to find just the right setting for you. Often times we tend to be impatient and move that adjustment too far one way or the other, only to find that the results are fuzzy and unacceptable. However, due to the fact that you can move it just 1% at a time, if you allocate some time, and go through these steps repeatedly, you will most likely find one that will be a decent compromise at a larger size that suits you. It may not be the perfect solution but it does have the most impact on everything that is displayed.

Finally this can be chalked up to a live and learn situation which for you is free, since the company provided the machine for you.

I love the resolution, my productivity has gone up but then I am used to working at very high resolutions.

While ThinkPads with standard aspect ratio screens aren't available in Lenovo's US web shop, they can be ordered through Lenovo Business Partners.

Be happy that you are getting High Res laptops. It raised productivity. You get used to it... and after a while you will realize you could never go back to Low Res.



How would you compare the two in terms of usage on resolution? Assuming you ignore the IPS Flexview benefits. How does the laptop & resolution over all benefit your work & productivity in different applications etc.

Elaborate? Who would that be? How to get in touch with them? Do they only do BULK orders for a company like Pfizer etc.

Please see page 2 in this document. The T Series standard aspect ratio screen models are on page 6 in the same document. For these, they say "While Supplies Last" and "Limited Quantities", so it's probably only a matter of time until these models will be gone. In my understanding, anyone can order from a Lenovo Business Partner.

The real key in many cases is to re-frame how one looks at the change and try to embrace it. Many times, we are too quick to judge before giving the new resolution a chance. Speaking for myself, I too required a period of time to adjust to the higher res, however once I did and became comfortable with it suddenly my productivity really improved as I was doing less scrolling. Now when I happen to sit in front of some else's ThinkPad with the lower res, I cannot wait to get back to mine.

So in my case it ended up being all about my attitude towards it.

Actually, it's great.

I work in IT, and having four 800X600 windows tiled for 4 remote desktop sessions or a mix of everything in 4 windows, plus enough room left in that strip for IM has increased my productivity, by a lot.

And if you are relaxing in front of a TV on the couch, just use the Fn+Space to max one 800X600 window for web browsing.

That's what I do anyway. I will always have 1920X1200, it's awesome!

I love my 1920x1200, but I'm pretty young, so I guess my vision can handle it. Everything is so crisp!

Awwww, I love the super high-res screens. I love my t60p's UXGA and would only get a new T if it was WUXGA. But as people have said above, Im young and have exceptional vision, so more text in same screen space => more productive => good

Well, get T61p's with 1680x1050 LCD then. I'm currently sitting in front of one, and it is absolutely gorgeous. That's about the right resolution for the 15.4'' wide screen.
Unless you're doing molecular modelling or some serious graphics work, why are you getting the p models anyway?
T61's which come with 1680x1050 or lower resolutions by default might have done as well?
