Forgive me if I missed it, but has anyone tried two 300x CF cards in a dual slot Addonics adapter in a RAID 0 configuration. If so, can you post benchmarks and a subjective evaluation of the speed. Thanks.

OK let's check some bench with the Addonics AD4CFPRJ Quad Raid adapter :

Thanks for the numbers. Do you also have numbers for an Hitachi 5400 RPM 2.5" HDD for comparison?

Sorry I do not...
But I tried to compare my Transcend CF 300x with my SATA 5400trs 160GO Samsung HD (USB 2) and Read speed is more or less the same, the Samsung HD performs better concerning the Write Speed.

EVERYONE - this is an excellent suggestion. I am waiting for mine now, because for grins, I installed the Thinkpad x40 OS on the 133x Transcend and it worked, but I'd rather poke my eyes out with a sharp stick then use it for the OS - slow doesn't even describe it. It is EXCRUCIATING!!!!!!!!!!

LOL as far as I know it makes no sense to put a 133X CF into the IBM X40/41... it's slow to the death :!:
You'd better go for (a least) a 266X CompactFlash if you want to get any advantage.

 You are so right. On a subjective basis does the Transcend 16gb 300x "feel" as fast or faster than the original HD?

The Transcend 300x CF is better from far than the Hitachi 1.8 HD : OS is smoother, faster and more responsive. This all has already been said on this forum

It feels much better. Boot and application loading benefit most, installing, copying (both to and from) are lot faster. Day and night. The notebook is now all I expect from it. Highly recommended :).

Hi,
I've bought the Transcend 300x 4GB. It run very fast even in write!
I use them in a small embedded pc(http://www.pcengines.ch/alix1c.htm) with a reduced version of winxp. With the transcend 300x i didn't note speed differences when i switch on the EWF, but with the others cf (transcend 133x, apacer 133x) the differences was hudge. The transcend 133x with EWF active is fast as the 300x.
Another trick to speed up the boot time is the minlogon, but you loose the multiple users accounts and some other things.
I've tried the transcend 300x in udma 4 and in udma 5 (you have to use 3.3V for udma5) but there is no difference: the speed limit of the cf (about 46MB/s) it's not enough to saturate the udma 4 bandwidth(66MB/s).

Hey all, I have the Addonics Dual Adapter and two Silicon Power Compact Flash Cards. It took a little while, but I was able to install windows and can now use both cards - but I have a problem.

When I turn on my computer I get a "Fixed Disk Error 1" unless I do a diagnostic boot. This takes a long time compared to quick boot, defeating some of the reasons to have Compact Flash.

Has anybody found a way around the "Fixed Disk Error" message aside from using diagnostic boot?

I'm using an x40.

Just to follow up in case anybody else was having this issue, I was able to resolve the problem by re-installing windows. It appears the compact flash card wasn't running at full speed - things are working now.

Thanks for all the help guys, but I've decided to take a different tack. I found an x60s on eBay, and for a total of $800 I could get it, and pump it with a 320gb/7200rpm HD and 4gb (3gb usable) memory, and live with its "modest" 8 hr battery. Yes, I realize I'm chickening out, but this should get the job done until SATA SSD's in 256gb show up. :D

It says it's a 60GB SOLID STATE hard drive...? Pretty sure it's not SSD, how can SSD even be in 60GB?

It's definitely not a SSD. You should email the seller just to make sure. However, if it's an SSD, the capacity should be 64GB.

This is either a replacement ZIF type hitachi 60GB drive with a converter to 44pin IDE, or the converter with a different ZIF drive inside (like the sandisk UATA5000 i have, posted earlier in this thread)
That converter is not that hard to modify if you want to fit a ZIF SSD in your X40/41.

btw i'm thinking of selling my sandisk 32GB uata 5000. I'll probably upgrade the X41 itself this time (I need some more oomph for my fpga programming work). so i'll be selling the X41 with the 40GB HD it came with, and the sandisk drive separately.

I would advise that you keep the sandisk SSD. The reason is that most of the ultraportable notebook on the market uses the sandisk SSD that you have. Most notable examples is the Sony Vaio TZ, the HP 2510p/2710p, and the Dell D420. Also, if you are able to buy a ZIF to SATA converter (I was lucky enough to got one from Dell) then you got yourself a 2.5" SSD. Most of my SSD's come and go, but I always keep the 1.8" sandisk SSD because I can use it in any laptop I want.

I also have one of those converters, thanks to Dell. I've put the SSD up for sale and if i can't get the right price for it i'll keep it. I'm looking for an X60 with a L7400 CPU to replace my X41.

I see, good luck with your sale :)
Also, I don't recall any X60 with low voltage processor. Are you sure you don't mean X60s?

I should have noted that i am looking for a tablet version, sorry.

edit 12 aug.:
The SSD is sold. For 200 euros. That's exactly how much i spent on it a few months ago. Not bad if you consider the recent developments and the price drops.
Ordered an X60 (6363-WDK).

Noticed that mtron is shipping a 32GB 1,8" AT ZIF SSD, 100MB/s read and 100MB/s write. It's an SLC drive, should make your X4x unbelievably fast if the SATA bridge can keep up with it.
Current price in the Netherlands: about 255 euros.

Hi all, I know this is not the correct forum for my post but the same post on the legacy forum is not generating any responses hence the post here...

I've just recently acquired a Sandisk Extreme IV 8GB and the addonics dual cf-ide adapter for my 240x PIII 500.

However, after ghosting the image of my current 20GB hitachi hdd and then cloning it into the CF card using the Sandisk CF Card.

For some reasons, it's dog slow and I mean like real slow, it takes a few minutes for the start menu to appear after clicking on start. I tried to transfer a 650mb file (i.e. the winxp iso) between partitions on the same card and windows estimates it at 160mins...

I've checked to see if my primary IDE bus is set to DMA and it does not appear to be operating under PIO mode...

Any ideas on what might be the reason?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Cheers

I had no such error. What do you mean by copying installation disks? They are bootable... They are meant to be booted, not to be copied. Please specify what your hw is, most people won't scroll back and dig through page of posts to find out and please give exact scenario.

My experience with an SSD CF went like this.
Since I only own an upgrade Windows XP, I copied my Windows 98 full version CD as well as Windows XP W/SP2 CD onto an 8 Meg San Disk Extreme III.
I put the Addonics single adapter (very tricky) with the CF card into my X40.
Using a Windows 98 floppy disk I was able to install Widows 98 onto the card. I got a few disk errors with scandisk but eventually I got it on there!
Many of the X40 items wouldn’t load but I was able to find Win 98 drivers on the Internet for the important ones.
Finally I upgraded to XP from the copy on the drive. It took about an hour but eventually everything went in and there were no exclamation marks on the Device Driver screen.
The only annoyance was the Windows page-file which Windows had to create on every boot.
I thought the page file error had to do with the Windows 98 install before XP/SP2. So I did a format C: and started over.
Now I really ran into difficulties! No matter what I tried I couldn’t get any version of Windows to load from the card, or onto the card! Bad card and I/O errors popped up all over the place! I figured I had blown the Addonics adapter, or somehow messed up the CF card.
Last night I tried an old version of XP, without SP2, and it started to load right up from the CD. Go figure!
This time though there were plenty of exclamation points in Device Manager. I loaded the required drivers, then put SP2 on top of that and I’m back in the saddle again.
This second attempt doesn’t ‘feel’ quite as robust as my original install over Windows 98. There is still no page-file but ‘write’ speeds from the USB 2.0 are really slow, which wasn’t the case before.
Now that I know the Addonics adapter is good I’ll try other install options until I get it right.

Hi, so i made it work by changing the bios setting as writen before. My mistake, before i read it not good enough.
Anyway, thank you guys! Except the stupid 2010 error is all running perfect.

Hi and hello again,

well, i instaled the windows from IBM (from the 6. CD's) and i was surprised... its not much faster, acctualy it seems to me that its the same :-(
I dont know what i made wrong. And another thing, after instaling the IBM recovery windows i lost approx. 6 GB.
I think that the system copied, all instalation files on my Transcend 300x "disc" and instaled it after from that. Is there any solution how to skip this procedure, or how to spend less space by instaling windows (from IBM CD's)

Thank you
