Hi,

So I just bought used an X61 Tablet w/ the SXGA+ screen. I really like it, but it has a broken latch and no warranty. (I bought it used.) It's not a huge deal, but does anyone know the cheapest place to get a replacement latch?

Also, is it a pretty easy fix? The latch does work now as is - but not that well; it can pop out completely, and it's very fiddly when I try to lock the computer closed.

Thanks!

The cheapest place would be EBAY. The repair especially for the thick glued to bezel SXGA+ screens would only take a few tricky steps.

All the information you need can be found in the X61T Hardware Maintenance Manual. It's up to you to decide.

Thanks - that was really helpful. It doesn't look too bad but the only thing I'm worried about is that glue-bezel problem... I really don't want to loosen the glue at the bottom & create a new problem.

I just recently replaced the latch on my X61t w/ SXGA+, and it was really easy compared to swapping out the system board. My system doesnt actually use glue to hold the bezel onto the screen: it was double-sided sticky tape. I actually replaced the tape with just regular "permanent" Scotch double-sided tape, and it holds well.

Btw, does anyone know if the X300 has an SXGA+ option? I am reluctant to replace my tablet because i love the resolution on it.

It's not really glue. It's like a heavy-duty tack. Most SXGA+ models have a least one side (the bottom) secured with this. The other sides are secured by a thick double-sided tape. Just avoid a dusty workplace and after you have removed all the screws patiently with firm pressure peel the bezel off. In other words don't rip it off or you will be looking for a new bezel.

Great - thanks for all of your help - it's greatly appreciated!

I'm going to try and replace the latch next month after my exams are finished.

There's no SXGA+ option for X300. This is a wide-screen only model.

Don't let the "glue" scare you. It is just a strong thin double sided tape. If you take your time and gently work your way around, it will have plenty of tack left to hold again. I did it twice last night with a X41T and the second time was almost as sticky as the first. Just be sure to work far enough ahead so you don't over stress the bezel plastic when pulling it up.

I'm not sure how active this topic is anymore, but I just wanted to share my experience with repairing the latch on my X61 Tablet.

I drilled a 1/16" hole through the end of the lid (centered top to bottom), and in the dead center of the latch assembly. I drilled the same size hole through the plastic latch piece with the latch in the up position, and in the down position. Then I used a dremel to slot the plastic latch piece from the top hole to the bottom hole. I then inserted a 1/16" steel dowel pin through the whole assembly, locking the latch into the slot in the lid.

The repair is rock solid, and I'll probably NEVER have an issue with the latch for the life of the machine. It still slides up and down, and latches securely in both positions.

Of course I'm sure I voided my warranty, but I bought this thing used anyway...no big deal for me.

A Big Thankyou

To tankmorph

the solution he gave was perfect I used a nail (small tack) mesured it with a micrometer and then drilled, cut the pin down to the right height giving me a dowel and then holding in with just a tiny bit of glue (not really necessary just didnt want it working loose) tada
job done, I havent had to dis-mantle my screen and way sronger than the origninal clip as there is some metal in the top bit that makes it really strong.

THANK YOU

p.s. excellent diagram and photos it made me confident to do the job and it was completed within 2-3 minutes. IBM should give you a pile of money to assist them (if they did that my clip wouldn't have broken in the first place!)

No problem. I think it's pretty awesome that I was able to help you 2 1/2 years later!
