Does System Update actually work? I know they pulled the plug a while back but it looks like it was re-released. I installed "systemupdate314-2009-5-15.exe" but when I run it, all I get is "An error occurred while gathering user data". Don'tcha just love fully descriptive error messages? Note that in the change log, this error is mentioned as being fixed in the current release.

If you are running Vista SP2, then you need to install this patch as well...

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-72758

And Windows 7 is not supported yet.

See the below thread for more information:

Cheers.

Thanks, I missed the need for the patch when I downloaded it this morning. Musta been in a hurry. I'll get the patch this evening and see if it works.

Thanks,
Paul

Well, the patch worked and System Update ran. And screwed my system. Among other things, it offered and installed some graphics drivers that took my idle CPU usage from near zero to about 50% continuously and it killed the center button scroll on the Trackpoint. I had initially elected to NOT install the updated Trackpoint driver SU offered (had trouble with it before) but since the center button was now dead I decided to give it a try. The driver install took forever and when it finished it announced that it didn't install. Terrific. Since the center button was still dead, I decided to do a system restore and get rid of System Update. Sigh. I'll just stick to manual updates.

I'm still on Vista SP1 on my X60 Tablet. I have had a variety of problems with Vista, including some still unexplained issues relating to some of the preinstalled Lenovo software. However, I ran the latest version of System Update last night and everything went smoothly. It found and installed updates for me, everything installed correctly, and some issues that I previously had were actually fixed. My middle button trackpoint scrolling still works exactly as before.

None of this is any help to you, I realize, but I thought I'd let folks know that not all X60/X61 series machines will experience the same set of issues with System Update.

Phil.

Just to be clear, I don't think the problem is system update. The problem is Lenovo drivers. This is not the first time they have broken something and/or been worse than what they replaced.

I like the concept of system update and may actually re-install it. But from now on I think I'll do updates one at a time so I can easily identify the cause of any new issues.

Anyone else had their idle CPU usage go to around 50% after installing the latest grafics drivers? The culprit was (if memory serves) "igfxdrvr.exe" which I think is a driver for the video card in my x61s. System update installed it.

FWIW, I still love Vista. It has been totally solid for me, including SP2. I never thought I'd say that ;) But at least on the X61s it is as fast as XP, and things like networking are quite noticeably faster and more solid. I watch recorded TV shows on it, streamed from another PC over 802.11g. On XP I could do it but any significant other network traffic would cause stuttering. On Vista, it is 100% solid no matter what. I can even watch streaming video while doing a speed check.

FWIW, I reinstalled the video driver manually from the Lenovo site and it did the same thing.... igfxsrvc.exe hogged 50% of my CPU at idle. After a bit of Googling, I decided to remove the entries in the RUN key in the registry for igfxsrvc.exe and igfxpers.exe and problem solved. The graphics driver works fine and the CPU is near zero at rest.

Anyone have any ideas about why these two services are such resource hogs?

Paul

There're probably some conflicts in certain system configurations. If it was a widespread issue you would have found a >20-page thread about it here already.

If you intend to investigate in depth, you may do a clean install, install the video driver, then all other apps/drivers one-by-one and hopefully find out what's the culprit.

Otherwise, just stick with your current workaround.

Cheers : )

Looks like I'll stick with my current work-around. The OS came with the used laptop and I don't have the disks.... or the energy to do a clean install.
