#1 Post by Dark Helmet » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:34 pm

so it appears that my primary HD slot is hosed up and won't work. can i just convert the ultra-bat into the primary HD and just go from there?

trying NOT to spend $1500 on this fix here...

Yes, you should be able to boot off the Ultrabay drive. You'll just need the adapter. I did it back when I had my T42. I had Linux installed on the UltraBay and it booted with no problems.

It will boot from the ultrabay drive. However, it may take 1-2 minutes to start loading Windows if the primary (native) HDD drive is absent.

No delay problem in booting up from ultra bay, all you have to do is to set the booting order in your bios or pressing F12 to select the hard drive.

if I want to re-use the original hard drive (assuming its not fried) which of the bays do I need the SATA or the IDE/PATA???? I think the PATA...

Since your original drive is PATA, you can get an ultra bay tray for around $10 on ebay. As for which vendors, they are pretty much the same (most of them have sold over 1,000 items without too much bad feedbacks).
While you are waiting for the ultra bay tray to arrive, you might try to put your original drive in one of those USB enclosures to see if it is really dead or not. This will also give you some ideas whether your problem is with the drive or your motherboard. If the drive is OK, you should try to recover as much as possible your data on that drive.
