Has anyone actually had work experience using xp mode in win7? If so...does it work very well? I'll shortly be receiving my w510, and would like to avoid buying a bunch of software updates by going that route.

Hi Davis...
hope you enjoy your new toy ,,, w510s are nice machine !

Most of the guys @ my work run XP mode in Windows7 prof .....purely as they LIKE THE LOOKS! ..... and few pple dodnt want to learn the new Windows7 navigations etc ,,,
I am told that in Win7x32; 'most all' XP version apps runs lots better.... even with the NEW(yet to be Public released SP1)....((not sure of some lesser used apps released in XP only))
So in short - dont wory if you running Win7 32 but , most all apps runs nicely , even if you DONT USE XP MODE !!!

cheers - hope this helps

'XP Mode' is really just Windows XP running in a virtual machine being accessed through Remote Desktop; being virtualized means there is some loss of performance but for most apps you probably won't notice. The VM also has little or no 3D graphics support so no 3D games. Possibly more important is that the hard drive volume(s) of the physical machine are all mounted as network shares in the VM which can prevent some things from working (e.g. a command prompt can't use those volumes as its 'current' drive or directory).

Thanks. I ordered and received a w510. Had to send it back because I did not received what I THOUGHT I'd ordered. I wanted touch screen. Anyway...I installed wordperfect 9 on it...and it wouldn't run w/o glitches. So, I uninstalled, and installed version 11. That seemed to run better. However, I'm used to 9, so I'd like to use it.

I just received my w510 today. I'm going to try 9 on it 2c what happens.

you don't select it, you install it. or have the machine delivered with x64 preinstalled. also there's no 'upgrade' path. moving from x86 to x64 requires a data/doc backup and a clean install.

hth.
