X220 IPS Upgrade is only $50

#1 Post by plympton » Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:46 am

Wow. That's cool. No brainer territory. Funny, how upgrading a W or a T from HD+ to FHD is $200, and that's for going from a crappy display to a less-crappy display.

I hope Lenovo moves a ton of these so they keep moving them into the market.

It costs $150 in Canada. That seems like a huge price difference, especially since the Canadian dollar is now worth more.

IPS X220 screen has wider viewing angles than T5x0/W5x0 FHD one; however, color gamut and supposedly contrast, brightness and color accuracy is better on T5x0/W5x0 FHD screens. Also, in case of X220 you pay that extra only to get better specs, while in case of T5x0/W5x0 you also get an ultra-high (when compared to base screen) resolution.

This is my kind of screen. I have an X220 on order so time will tell whether I'm right. About the same upgrade price in Euro-land. I do not like high-resolution screens while there is still software and web-sites that won't scale properly. Having high-resolution available should not mean you have to squint all the time (those of us with lesser eyesight). If/when screens ever move up to printer resolutions this will go away, meanwhile in today's market you have to chose between pin-sharp and squinting (with my eyes) or larger and blurry or with other scaling (or lack thereof) issues. I'm grateful for higher quality, but lower DPI screens.

If i had a choice between great samsung TN panel with 1600*900 resolution, and IPS panel (unless it is significantly better than IPS HV121WX4 people installed in their X200/X201) with 1366*768 resolution, i'd choose the former any day. I'd even pay maybe $200 extra to get that high resolution while having an acceptable viewing angles and good (better than IPS) contrast, brightness and saturation (yes, i use my X200s primarily for software development as a work horse, web browsing while at home, and movies on the go).

Are there any such high resolution ones available as an option for this?

Penartur - Buddy! I just noticed. How & where did you get that 1600 x 900 ? Is that a mod that I havent tracked out here? Is it available from factory?

Unfortunately, i didn't get that 1600x900 (although i wish that). I said "if i had a choice", not "i made a choice". This is pure theory.

Exactly. If you (i.e. penartur) leave it in your signature, people will keep asking you about it. So, please do yourself and everyone else a favor by removing it.

theories are proven.   i think you mean speculation or wishful thinking. ;)

i agree that it would be best for everyone if you removed the 1600x900 reference from your signature.   i can say with a reasonable amount of confidence that such a panel isn't happening anytime soon.

My current laptop was marked by bold, and that hypothetical X220 was marked by italics meaning "i want to have it as my next laptop".
Is it better now after the clarification in the signature?

if no more off-topic disruptions are caused by it then that's fine.   if it continues to confuse members and cause an issue then we'll need to find a better solution.

'hoping for' or 'wishing for' is more on the dot, than 'waiting for' :P :)
