T420 clean install, Fingerprint doesn't work (E7210005)

#1 Post by s1148625 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 10:35 am

Background Info:

Performed a clean install of Windows 7 Pro to SSD (ordered system with standard HDD because I already had the solid state drive)
Installed in native UEFI mode with GPT partition to provide the fastest post and boot time.
Installed Windows SP1
Downloaded and installed latest T420 drivers and software from Lenovo.
Installed ThinkVantage System Update to make sure I didn't miss anything important (there are a few things I choose not to install).

Everything works EXCEPT the fingerprint reader. When I try to enroll, I get the following error message:

Code: Select all

E7210005 Cannot enroll user.
E7210005 Cannot update passport.
E7210005 Cannot find fingerprint sensor device.
The driver is installed and reports that the fingerprint sensor is working. I've tried installing/uninstalling/repairing/reinstalling the drivers and fingerprint software in any number of combinations, but nothing has succeeded in making the fingerprint sensor work.

It's not a hardware problem, because I put in the original hard drive, booted the system, and it works without any issues, so I know it's a software thing. I'm sure I'm just missing some kind of additional interface driver that is needed for the fingerprint scanner to work, but I can't find it. I've looked through the SWTOOLS folder on the original hard drive, and have installed a few extras from there, but nothing works.

Anybody have any ideas of what is required to get this working?

Why not just extract the preload from the Q:\...\cdrivebackup.wim to the SSD?

I couldn't find a way to restore the preload to a GPT partition for a native UEFI install.

You could extract the cdrivebackup.wim using 7zip directly onto the partition. Should work...

I think there is something up with the factory image. I tried a straight image directly to my SSD, but then after doing an Anytime Upgrade to Win7 Pro, SP1 failed to install with an error message for which there is no solution. So, in the 8 hours I spent futzing with it, I came to the conclusion that the original factor image was dead to me and I needed to find a way to get the fingerprint reader working on a clean install.

Straight images have their issues especially when going to different sized disks.

Extracting the WIM has always worked for me regardless of whether it was a factory image or from an actual retail disk (alternative way of installing a WIM based Windows).

I ran into the exact same problem a few weeks ago when I finally moved to Windows 7 on my T510. If you google the error code e7210005 you will see that we are not alone. After plowing through threads from various forums, I found out there are at least two ways to get this right:

1) The easier way is to not use the ThinkVantage Fingerprint software and let Windows 7 manage your fingerprints. To do this, simply uninstall ThinkVantage Fingerprint, reboot, then go to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Biometric devices and proceed from there. If this doesn't work, then try to uninstall the Biometric Devices from Device Manager, reboot, then have Windows update the driver automatically.

2) Another way that I tried and worked (I read about this on a Chinese forum) is to use the ThinkVantage Fingerprint software for Windows Vista instead of the one for Windows 7. To do this, you want to first uninstall both the existing ThinkVantage Fingerprint software and the Biometric Devices from Device Manager. After this, download and install the fingerprint software for Windows Vista.

This would actually be my preference - Windows seems to be a bit faster than the ThinkVantage fingerprint software. I tried this, along with every version of the UPEK driver/software I could find. In every case, the fingerprint reader is either unavailable or undetected.

I tried this too, and just ended up with a blue screen of death after logging in.

It seems like there are lots of people with this problem, but most threads end without a solution, or have some solution that indicates a different root cause than what I'm experiencing. Anybody have other possible solutions?

So... Does extracting the preload WIM onto the SSD not work?

Windows 7 SP1 won't install on the preload... and I've seen some conjecture in various threads about this problem that the fingerprint problems may be caused by SP1... so, I suppose I have to choose between a working fingerprint reader and Windows 7 SP1 until a newer driver comes out that fixes the problem.

+1, I'm having the exact same problem.

I've looked everywhere (Lenovo, IBM, notebookreview, lenovoforums, here, MSDN, Microsoft Social, Bing, Google, hack shops, etc) and find solutions to similar problems that arise from different root causes, or old upgrade problems from circa Windows 7 debut, or else solutions that don't work.

I have a T420, clean installed Windows 7 x64 UEFI (GPT) on an SSD, installed SP1 and most Thinkvantage tools. Everything works EXCEPT the fingerprint reader. Whenever I try to enroll a fingerprint, I get those same errors. I've tried both of UPEK's drivers (downloaded from the UPEK site), Lenovo Fingerprint Software 5.9.3.6882 and 5.8.6.6874 (which bluescreens just like S1148625 reports). Windows Biometrics says the device is unavailable even though device Manager sees it fine. When I boot to the original drive the fingerprint reader works fine. I've removed, repaired, reinstalled and installed-via-System-Update various versions of Lenovo Fingerprint Software. As I said in the beginning, I'm having the EXACT SAME problem.

Windows bluescreens on startup (and before login) after I try to remove SP1. Also, though I don't know if it is related, Lenovo Thinkvantage Toolbox crashes every time I open it, around 20 times in the last 2 days. I can continue to use it by simple moving the error message to the side. The Toolbox has tested and OK'd the "Biometrics Device" and I've run its battery of diagnostics and system tests.

This is my first experience with UEFI and GPT. I, too, was just hoping for the fastest boot time.

Once I get this SP1 bluescreen fixed, I'll either call Lenovo Tech Support or else just live without a fingerprint reader. I trust that a fix will come out eventually. I really like the fingerprint implementation on the T410, especially for Full Disk Encryption and power up with a single swipe.

If somebody finds a solution, please post it here. Thanks in advance. . .

There's something about the Intel HD3000 driver needing SP1, IIRC. Otherwise it would BSOD.

Tech Support says UEFI doesn't yet support Fingerprint Reade

#13 Post by camoh » Wed Apr 27, 2011 4:06 pm

Good point, Colonel O'Neill. I remember running across that. That would explain why both uninstalling SP1 and a system restore back to before SP1 was installed causes BSOD. My machine has discrete graphics and Optimus, but it could still be a problem since Optimus does make use of the IGP.

Anyhow, I just got off the phone with Lenovo Tech Support. The current version of UEFI DOES NOT SUPPORT a fingerprint reader. Lenovo did not give a date for the release of a UEFI update. I'm fine with that. Living on the cutting edge is like that sometimes. Oh, and my machine has version 1.22, taken from msinfo32, under BIOS Version/Date.

BTW, I've always had top-notch experiences calling Lenovo Tech Support and this time again my rep was knowledgeable even though UEFI is brand new. They said they've just received training, either on the 2011 Thinkpads or UEFI, but I'm not sure which.

I hope an update will soon fix this issue. Until it comes, I also hope that anybody experiencing this problem will be put at ease knowing that a fix is on the way. If you want to find this thread just search for Lenovo Thinkpad T420 SSD clean install windows 7 UEFI biometrics reader E7210005 error  just a few keywords. . .

Got the same problem on my new W520 after fresh install Windows 7 SP1 with GPT+UEFI on SSD. I can confirm the following.
1. It is not hardware problem. Try on stock hard drive, the device works fine.
2. Try UPEK newest software WBF version not work as well.
3. Here is the catch. Try UPEK software common version not using WBF (http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/windows7/legacy/), it works!!!!

So I think we can conclude that it is windows and driver incomparability problem. Hope that someone will be fixed that soon. For the mean time, I will keep using UPEK common version. The free version is lack some features but it will do for now.

Yeah, i'm just waiting for a lenovo fix.

Its probably just a bios thing. windows can see the device fine. it just cant ready it.

UEFI is fast enough to be worth the trouble

You can find a workaround for the fingerprint/UEFI issue at http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-a ... m-p/423135

Just find someotherguy's post from 05-06-2011 06:53 AM there.

upek's common-mode driver works wonders.

but i've gone back to legacy. not worth 2 seconds of boot time for all the glitches.

Enable the use of Fingerprints / Biometric Devices to log on to Microsoft Windows 7 using GPO
On Microsoft Windows 7 there’s a new Group Policy (GPO) Setting to manage biometric devices and permissions to log on to a domain using fingerprints.

To configure the use of Biometric devices..
Click Start

Type gpedit.msc

—GPEdit.msc
Click on gpedit

You should get here

—Microsoft_Windows_7_Group_Policy_Manage_Biometric_Devices
Expand Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Biometrics.

Now you can manage the behavior and permission of the biometric devices, allow the use of fingerprints to log on to the domain etc using these settings

(Allow the use of biometrics, allow users to log on using biometrics, allow domain users to log on using biometrics)

Of course, this GPO can also be applied to specific computers in a domain using Group Policy Management Console (gpmc.msc) and Domain Security Policy.

Thanks for this. I'm very glad to have this functionality back. One question. What does the "timeout for fast user switching events" do? I don't understand what this means.

I've enabled this function but still doesn't seem to work. Is something else required? This is Windows 7 64 on a W520.

I reimaged my w500 and the same error message came up when I tried to put new fingerprints in. I was trying to put new fingerprints in because my old fingerprints were still in the system, it just wasn't letting me log in with them. The help desk at RPI told me to run system update (just search "system update" in the start menu). I did, and installed all the updates (even the optional ones) and now it works completely fine. Hope this helps anyone else who comes across this problem in the future!
