[HOWTO] Install Lion Mac OS X 10.7 on Thinkpad T60p

#1 Post by adidasprince » Sun Aug 07, 2011 9:55 pm

Just like Anastasius did for X61, I am starting a new topic for sharing information about T60p.

Although original T60p comes with a CoreDuo CPU which IS NOT SUPPORTED by Lion Final, for those whose had upgraded to a Core2Duo CPU (or planing to do so) may think this topic is valuable.

The Results:
  • - Keyboard: works with ApplePS2Controller
    - UltraNav: works as trackpad with ApplePS2Controller.
    - HDD in Ultrabay ATA: out of box
    - DVD in Ultrabay ATA: not tested yet
    - LAN: out of box
    - WIFI: works with additional device id in /S/L/E/IO80211/Plugin/AirAtheros21. (AirDrop see Troubleshooting)
    - Video: QE/CI works with property injection.
    - Bluetooth: out of box
    - Sound: works with VoodooHDA.kext
    - SpeedStep: works with Silencer's DSDT mods
    - Restart: works with OpenHaltRestart.kext
    - Sleep: not touched yet.
My T60p spec: (Almost same as Silencer's)

The lowest spec among all Lion-supported Macs :-)
  • Original Model: 2007-93J
    CPU: upgraded to T7600, Core2Duo 2.33Hz
    MEM: 667Hz, 1G+2G
HDD: upgraded to SATA1.5G 32G SSD, Ultrabay ATA 300G HDD
    Video: Mobility FireGL V5200 256M, 71c4:1002
    LCD Res: 1600x1200
    Wifi: changed to Atheros 168c:1014
Former Working OSX: 10.6.8 with Chameleon RC5

Installation:

The procedure is quite similar with former SL versions.

0. Preparation
  • - Read MaLd0n's method intensively.
    - Two GPT partitions that one for installer partition and one for Lion which could be in:
    • - the internal SATA HDD
      - the internal Ultrabay HDD
      - an external USB HDD
    - A set of USB keyboard and mouse. Without it, do not continue this installation.
(The Lion installer won't proceed even PS/2 kexts was loaded and both kbd and trackpad are working.)
    - A working Mac OS X in 10.6.x or 10.7 for creating installer partition.
    - Download Lion from App Store or from developer program. DO NOT STEAL MAC OS X.
    - Download packaged kexts Extra.Lion.T60p.zip for T60p (Link)

1. Create installer partition
  • - Follow MaLd0n's method to create the installer partition called "INSTALLER_P" here.
    - Overwrite /mach_kernel which implicitly installed by Extra_Lion.pkg with the original one in InstallESD.dmg. (See this tur Step 8 )
    - Extract Extra.Lion.T60p.zip as INSTALLER_P/Extra. Following kexts are the minimal for booting the Lion installer.
    • fakesmc.kext
      NullCPUPowerManagement.kext
      ApplePS2Controller.kext, AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext (got from here)
      OpenHaltRestart.kext
    - Run /Extra/post/PC-EFI 10.6.pkg to install netkas's PCEFI bootloader into INSTALLER_P. (got from here)
    - Copy /Extra/post/boot to INSTALLER_P/boot
    - No DSDT.aml needed for installtion.
    - Now you got a bootable Lion installer. You may remove your USB kdb and mouse from here.

2. Install Lion
  • - Connect USB kdb and mouse to T60p.
    - Boot T60p from INSTALLER_P.
    - Format the target partition called LION_P.
    - Install Lion on LION_P.
    - The installer of Lion will reboot after the installation.
    - Still boot T60p from INSTALLER_P and select LION_P in the menu of the bootloader.
    - After Lion's welcome screen, copy whole /Extra from INSTALLER_P into LION_P.
    - Run /Extra/post/PC-EFI 10.6.pkg again to install netkas's PCEFI bootloader into LION_P and overwrite LION_P/boot by /Extra/post/boot.
    - Here you are. You got a minimal bootable Lion in your T60p.

3. Post installation

All files used here are located in LION_P.
  • - Copy /Extra/post/DSDT.aml and /Extra/post/com.apple.Boot.plist to /Extra.
    - DSDT.aml above is a copy from silencer's post so that you can remove NullCPUPM.kext to use vanilla's native speedstep.
    - Copy next two kexts in /Extra/post/kexts to /Extra/Extensions.
    • - VoodooHDA.kext for sound
      - VoodooBattery.kext for battery with 10.6.7's AppleACPIPlatform.kext (from here)
      - LegacyT60p.kext for wifi (modify device id if necessary)
    - Re-build .mkext by /Extra/post/pfix, and reboot once to see everything works fine.
    - The last tweak is video:
    • - Copy /Extra/post/EVOenabler.kext to /Extra/Extensions.
      - You may edit the EVOenabler.kext/Contents/Info.plist to fit your T60p's video card.
      - Edit the LegacyT60p.kext/Contents/Info.plist to fit the device id of your T60p's video card.
      - Reboot
    - That's all and enjoy!!!

Troubleshooting:

LAN not found
Set PciRootUID=1 in Boot.plist

Application freeze issue
Some one reported same issue on insanelymac.
Silencer's speedstep mods fixes this.
I used MacBookPro2,1 confs in smbios.plist and in LegacyT60p.kext.

App Store issue
Follow this.

UltraNav
Re-compiled kext can be download from kext.com

What I did for my own T60p
Just FYI, see #3.

AirDrop
To use AirDrop, one of compatible cards is needed.
I bought one like this which is some kind of mods for Thinkpad.
However this card is not recognized as AR5009 but the AR5008.
But AirDrop worked if I removed 0x24 from Athroes21.kext, and added it to Atheros40.kext.

I've been trying to get Lion working on my X60 for a while, and I have several ideas for you :

1. Try to install Lion on an external drive from Real/Supported Core2Duo Mac and remove the famous "/System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist"
(I tried this here)

2. Google for "Lion on Unsupported Mac and VMWare" and get the modified .dmg. It's what I did to make my old mac mini to boot Lion ... link

I used to get DP to boot on my X60, but my lion experience stopped with the 64bit Finder that came with DP4 ... My CoreDuo can't handle it !

Re: Lion Mac OS X 10.7 on Thinkpad T60p

#4 Post by adidasprince » Tue Aug 09, 2011 9:06 pm

What I did from the begining:

[2011/Aug/08]

tonymacx86's method:
- "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" keeps saying “This version of Mac OS X 10.7 cannot be installed on this computer”.
- Tried lots of smbios.plist, no luck.
- My system SSD is too small to save "Install Mac OS X Lion.app". I saved it on an external USB HDD.
- My T60p doesn't meet these requirements: "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" in /Applications; Chimera bootloader.
- So, this method may don't work for me.

MaLd0n's method:
- The installer partition was created for another desktop which went all good.
- Kexts in /E/E: fakesmc.kext, NullCPUPowerManagement.kext
- smbios.plist: tried MacPro3,1, iMac10,1
- DSDT: tried w/ same from 10.6.x, and w/o any
- Booting by -v, installer stuck at

Code: Select all

BootCacheControl: Unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist: 2 no such file or directory
Bug:launchctl.c:2408 (24687):30: cdefd =open (g_overrides_db_patch....
- Booting by -x -v, some KP about CPU occurred after file copy started.

[Updated 2011/Aug/09]
- Original Chameleon (even the newest RC5) leads the stalls described above. Use netkas's bootloader solved it. (Reference)
- The Extra_Lion.pkg in MaLd0n's method includes a mach_kernel whose version is unknown. I skip this kernel and use the original one in InstallESD.dmg. (See this tur Step 8 )
- Kexts needed in /E/E: fakesmc, NullCPUPowerManagement, OpenRestartHalt, VoodooPS2Controller(64bit) w/ PS2Nub

Results:
(Without DSDT injection)
- Keyboard: 64bit VoodooPS2Controller, or boot arch=i386 to use the 32bit kext.
- UltraNav: Neither 64bit nor 32bit VoodooPS2Controller worked. not even the ThinkpadUltraNav of mine.
- Ultrabay ATA: HDD/out of box, DVD/not tested yet
- LAN: out of box
- WIFI: works. added device id directly into /S/L/E/IO80211/Plugin/AirAtheros_21. (May switch to Legacy.kext method later)
- Bluetooth: not touched yet
- Sound: not touched yet.
- Video: no QE/CI. RadeonHD.kext didn't work.
- Restart: need OpenRestartHalt.kext

Next:
- the QE, the whole QE, and nothing but the QE

[Updated 2011/Aug/10]

QE Worked just like former version !!!

Hello,
First off, thank you so much for this guide. I am having a problem that I hope someone can help me with. Everything works just fine until I reboot after re-building .mkext using /Extra/post/pfix. When I try to reboot the computer begins to start and gets to the grey screen with the apple logo in the middle. After about a minute another symbol superimposes itself over the apple logo. It looks like a no smoking symbol but without the cigarrette.

Please if you have any idea what is causing this or how to fix it let me know.

Best,
CC

Lion abandoned .mkext and pfix mechanism. Coping all .kexts to /S/L/E should works.

The Installation method of Lion Mac OS X 10.7 on Thinkpad T60p given in your thread is informational as well as helpful for me. Actually I am looking for the installation of the latest version of Mac operating system i.e. Lion operating system. Please do share something about the Lion browser. Thank you.

Could someone make an image and use like with Carbon Copy or any other software? Is that even possible? (Like how I do Win 7 on PC's using Acronis True Image)

I'm having a bit of an issue with putting Lion on my T61. It's a very basic model, with X3100 graphics and a T7100 CPU. It's a 14.1" widescreen model, resolution of 1280x800. That just about covers the basics.

The problem I'm facing is that upon a clean install (I've tried many - Multibeast, Conti's, Maldon's), everything appears to run OK but I get a lot of application freezes/crashes. This happens even when almost no drivers/kexts are installed besides the bare minimum to get running.

I saw another post on insanelymac about freezing graphics on the X3100 but I don't think my problem is the same.

Whenever I open any windows (Finder, Safari, TextEditor), sometimes it'll open fine. Other times, maybe the window will open about 1/4 of the size and it will be transparent. You can sometimes still click and select things on the window. Most of the time though, the application will freeze. I'll then have to press cmd-alt-esc to allow me to force quit it. Sometimes windows will just randomly freeze (with the spinning cursor wheel showing). Relaunching enough times will eventually spawn the window for whatever application... However, it's hardly an ideal situation.

For what it's worth, I've managed to get the X3100 running at the correct resolution, and I think that QE/CI is running since I can open up chess and move pieces about. I've also followed Silencer's guide to DSDT editing and managed to implement most mods besides vanilla speedstep (which I tried but doesn't appear to work for me).

I don't think it's a hardware failure since everything runs OK in Windows.

Any help would be appreciated.

Honestly, I was having a LOT of trouble getting my T60p to run the latest version of Lion.
@Sebinouse totally saved the day. Got the .dmg file on a quick google search. Simple and Easy.

I have a T60P (14.1" non widescreen) that is otherwise nearly identical to the OP's setup. I have the same graphics card (ATI FireGL v5250 0x71c41002) and I have successfully managed to get it running with full QE/CI on Lion 10.7, but it's pretty intermittent. I can't consistently get it to boot with full graphics acceleration for some reason. Sometimes it boots to a black screen, sometimes it boots normally but without QE/CI or resolution change, and sometimes it boots flawlessly. If there is any special trick that I am missing to get this working consistently, I'd like to know.

EDIT:

It seems that it is possible to boot consistently with QE/CI if I pass the following arguments "-v -c -f GraphicsEnabler=No "Graphics Mode"=1400x1050x32". I do realize that I could simply add this to my boot.plist, but re indexing the kernel caches every single time I boot is pretty time consuming.

EDIT 2:

after upgrading via combo updater to 10.7.5, all that needs to be done is add "UseKernelCaches=No" to boot.plist. It does tack on a few extra seconds at boot, but on my SSD it's not a big deal.

Hi all, I know this is an old post but I've successfully installed Mavericks onto my Thinkpad T60p. I read in this thread that the CoreDuo isn't compatible. How would I know if my processor is compatible? Would the system even start up? My GPU is slightly different than yours and I'm having difficulty finding out if it's compatible (RV530/M66 GL [Mobility FireGL V5250] Please any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Core Duo CPU is 32 bit only. If you have Core 2 Duo or greater, then that is compatible.

They said it couldn't be done!!! But after I successfully upgraded my daughter's late 2006 iMac5,1 to Mountain Lion 10.8.4 using HackerWayne's MLPostFactor as seen here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1325709 I got to thinking that maybe there was some hope for these aging ThinkPads yet. I'll do my best to break down exactly what I did to get Mountain Lion up and running on my ThinkPad T60P.

The trick to getting this all up and running was to be as minimally invasive with the hacks and tweaks that you use, because Mountain Lion Post Factor (MLPF) is already an extensive collection of hacks, tweaks and modified drivers that are aimed at getting Mountain Lion to run on real legacy Macs that have been obsoleted, provided they meet the minimum hardware requirements (64 bit capable processor and at least 2GB RAM). Since I already had to make those upgrades to get Lion running on my T60P, I was ready to go.

Anyway, so here is the basic rundown of what you have to do:

1) starting from your fully functional 10.7.5 install, acquire the "Install Mountain Lion" app and MountainLionPostFactor and the latest Multibeast (5.5.5 at the time of writing) for Mountain Lion.

2) create two more hard drive partitions, each a BARE MINIMUM of 8GB, one called "Install", the other called "ML" (as per HackerWayne's instructions... technically you can call them whatever you want). I managed to install Mountain Lion on an 8GB partition and it is NOT happy. from first boot, it was squawking at me about the startup disk being full, blah, blah, blah...

3) Making sure that the Mountain Lion app is in /Applications, run MLPF, pointing it at the "Install" partition. This is basically doing the exact same thing that XMove from TonyMacx86 does. After it completes, (keeping in mind that this IS a Hackintosh), run multibeast on the "Install" partition, selecting ONLY the bare minimum kexts needed to get the system working (JMicron36x_ATA, ElliotForceLegacyRTC, EvoReboot, FakeSMC, NullCPUPowerManagement PS/2 Keyboard/Mice and AppleACPIPlatformRollback (10.6.8). You'll also need to install VoodoTSCSync if you don't want to have to boot with cpus=1.

4) Reboot and select the new "Install" partition at the Chameleon boot loader. If your computer fails to boot up the first time, it's probably because of tweaks that you made to your org.chameleon.Boot.plist on your working 10.7.5 partition. Temporarily, rename /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist to /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.bak and proceed with installing 10.9.4 to the new "ML" partition.

5) after successful installation, as per HackerWayne's instructions, under the Utilities menu select "MLPostFactor" and install it on the "ML" partition.

6) reboot back into your functional 10.7.5 partition and install all of the same kexts you installed on the "Install" partition. You will also need to make whatever modifications to your Graphics, WiFi, etc. kexts. For my graphics card (V5250 FireGL) I had to install the AppleACPIPlatForm.kext from 10.6.8 (I think) and add 0x71C41002 to both the ATIRadeonX1600.kext and ATI1600Controller.kext. If you have a different graphics card, you are on your own.

7) Reboot into the new "ML" partition. If it won't boot, double check that you have disabled the org.chameleon.Boot.plist on your main 10.7.5 partition. If you have and it STILL isn't booting, repair disk permissions on the ML partition. If that doesn't work, boot with -v -f.

You can reuse your smbios.plist and dsdt.aml from your 10.7.5 partition. You will need to keep the modifications to the Boot.plist to a minimum and make changes one at a time. If you used any EFI strings, they are not going to work anymore and will probably prevent your computer from booting ML successfully.

Enjoy Mountain Lion!!!

I'm still in the process of sorting out what works and what doesn't. So far I have not gotten the App store working, but all of the hardware that worked in Lion works, including QE/CI!

This doesn't make any sense to me. The FireGL V5250 has device id 71D5 not 71C4......The V5200 works because it is based off the mobility X1600....the V5250 is more difficult because it is based off the mobility X1700

EDIT
I checked your machine type 2007-CQ8, you do NOT have a V5250, you have a V5200, which is the reason why you got it to work......
