Hi all
I have an IBM t40 manufactured 03/12.
I'd like to renovate it a bit and have some questions:
1. HDD to SSD. is it possible to use any SSD in it? Is it SATA or IDE interface?
2. RAM. What type of RAM is it? How many RAM slots are there? What is the maximum RAM supported?
3. OS. Which lunux for it? Ubuntu?
4. Do you have any recommendations regarding this process?

Thanks a lot.

1. It has IDE interface. There might be some PATA SSD, but I don't think it would be worth the expense. A good fast HDD will be about as good as it gets. Too bad they are so expensive right now.

2. PC2100 or PC2700, Max supported is 2x1GB, one slot on the bottom and the other under the keyboard.

3. Linux of your choice. I like CrunchBang and currently running Aptosid XFCE. Ubuntu might be OK, but I would rather Mint.

4. What is the type number of the machine in question? Let's see what you are starting with.

I really wanted to get an SSD in that machine. It has a removable ultrabay (?) CD rom, it is possible to install an SSD there in a caddy and boot from it?
The ultrabay seems the same to a T60 ultra bay and it can definitely boot a SSD from it.
Will this work on a t40 with the following TYPE 2373-19U s/n 99-80ady 03/12? - it has 512 mb of RAM

My idea is to put an SSD (one way or another) and another 512 mb RAM and get an linux on. IS this going to revive it?

The T40 can take 2x1GB RAM.

You can put an IDE SDD in the HD drivebay (or via 2nd HDD IDE adapter in the Ultrabay).
You can put a SATA SDD only via 2nd HDD SATA adapter in the Ultrabay.
