Welcome to the forum!

What's the 7-character model number of your R60, should be something like 9457-abc, located on the same sticker on the bottom that holds the serial number and the production date.

You need a Core 2 Duo CPU in order to run a 64-bit OS, let's see if you have one in there already..

Ok - :thumbs-UP:

Your R60 unfortunately was shipped from the factory with a T2500 CoreDuo CPU.

Quote:
ThinkPad R60 (9462-73U)
T2500(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15in 1400x1050 LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, IEEE 1394, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

As George pointed out you will need a Core2Duo CPU to run Win-7 64bit

Possible candidates are:
T5600 1.83GHz
T7200 2.0GHz
T7400 2.13GHz
T7600 2.33GHz

What's your location? I've got both T7400 and T7600 readily available...

How much RAM do you have in there? If you're still at factory 1GB, that's the first thing you should upgrade.

You can very well skip Vista and go right into W7, but without at least 2GB of RAM that will be painful.

If you upgrade to W7, may as well throw a SSD in there unless you have large storage requirements for an internal drive.

You can change the CPU if you want to go for a 64-bit OS. You'll gain 10-15% in speed as well.

RAM is PC2-5300 (DDR 667) laptop RAM, your machine maxes out at 3GB.

Your best bet is to buy a 2GB DIMM.

We don't know whether your current RAM is 2x512MB or 1x1GB.

Even with 2.5 GB your machine should be a *lot* snappier than it's now, if properly configured.

That's a 1GB DIMM.

You can pick up a 2GB here on the forum for just a couple of bucks more:

Makes no difference...you won't know unless you open up the machine to see the actual setup, or run a program that will tell you whether it's one or two DIMMs in there...
