The last ThinkPads with an integrated serial port were A31p and T30, both are about a decade old now.

The last "square" ThinkPads were T61/p (in 4:3 form although widescreen versions are more common) and X61/T. You'd need a dock for T6x (Ultrabase on X series) to have these ports.

T4x series didn't have a serial port, but did have a parallel one.

If you need a modern, "square" machine with a serial and parallel port, Panasonic ToughBooks are your only choice,

Good luck.

Well,

None of the T series machines with series/parallel ports support SATA drives or DDR2...

The only "square" units with native support for SATA drives are T60/p/T61/p and X60/61 series...

There's some re-reading waiting for you...

"p" defines the top-end model(s) of a particular generation starting with A20p and ending with T61p.

Not all X series are tablets. X3x series had no tablet option, just a regular sub-notebook.

Not quite correct. ;)

The T43 uses DDR2 (maximum of 2GB). No SATA*, plus it's picky about non-IBM firmware IDE drives where other T4x are not. With 2GB RAM and the Radeon card it runs Windows 7 reasonably well even with Aero.

*The chipset has SATA however IBM fitted a SATA to IDE bridge chip to allow them to use the existing T4x chassis and options. Hence the IBM firmware drives restriction to ensure compatibility.

@MagicBoy:

You haven't read my signature, have you?... :D

Yes, a T43/p can support both SATA and DDR2...but that's really not a viable option for an average user...that's why I stayed away from recommending the T43/p lineup...

The p denotes professional. It's an higher spec machine usually with high-res screens and ISV certified FireGL/Quadro graphics for running pro applications like AutoCAD.

T - Thin and Light. 14/15" form factor, ultrabay.
X - Ultra portable. 12" form factor, no ultrabay. Optional Ultrabase with additional ports and ultrabay to add expansion. Tablet option on the X41 upwards.

Must have missed the sig! The T43 is a bit of a strange beast at times, but I rather liked mine. Just replaced a few this afternoon with T420.

The 14 inch T40 series have superior displays to the 14 inch T60 series. There are PATA SSDs available, but I do not know for what price.

IIRC, most 14.1" T4x units use panels that were also used in 14.1" T60/R60s. (And more still used ones that were mechanically identical but just different "soft" revisions.) Some of the earlier T4x series used CMO (XGA) and IDTech (SXGA+) panels that weren't re-used, but those few weren't really special -- just run of the mill TN panels IMHO.

T60 with mini-dock is reasonably fast, can be had cheap and will give you the ports you need.

You want a 14" T61 or a T61p (DDR2 and SATA, SATA2 with a modded BIOS), with this accessory ($48):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/331368218012

T61 and T61p units with nVidia graphics have a problem that causes failure of the graphic chip over time, except for rare new or serviced units. You can buy one with Intel graphics, for an nVidia unit without this problem, please contact ajkula66 and/or TuuS. They probably will be able to provide some extra options based on heavily modded units, like units with high res 15" panels and nVidia motheboards without the early failure problem. I would not recommend a T60/T60p because they are limited to 3ish GB of DDR1.
