Hello everyone,
Ive had a T20 for a year or so now, great machine all in all, but after yesterday i noticed that it puts out much more heat than usual.
So i took a look at the fan and saw that it only works while the BIOS screen is shown, after that it stops. Before it used to work non-stop until i turn the pc off.
Might anyone have some ideas ?

Thanks :)

Hello rufee,

I would say the behaviour you are describing is quite normal for the T2x: Right after starting, during the POST, the fan starts to blow on high speed for two seconds or so, and then it turns of. On my T20, T21, it only starts again after 15 minutes or later, when I really demand CPU power.
What operating system are you using? Any programs installed to control fan speed?
If you want to check if the fan starts at all when the OS is booted, just watch some internet (flash-) videos. This pushes the CPU quickly.

Best Regards,

Nom

Hi Rufee,

Welcome to the forum.

In additional to Nom's advice I would suggest checking your system's temperature to see if overheating is a problem or if it's just running normal. A good little program for monitoring temperature on a ThinkPad is Mobile Meter which can be download for free at the following website........

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Sys ... eter.shtml

Just download the file, unzip and run.

Thanks guys,

I thought it always ran, giving that its an older computer and fan's those days just had one adjustment on/off :D
It is almost a vanilla xp installation, no fan software.
Anyway tested it with load (youtube) and it seems that the fan runs just fine.
Although a new odd thing happens when i try to turn it on, i push the power button the lights shine but nothing happens no POST, nothing.
Makes no difference whether its plugged in or not. Booted it up after 5 tries hmm...

If your T20 turns on the power LED (the one that looks like a "Z" turned slightly sideways) but there's no beeps and the LCD does not light up, then I would do the following and see if it helps with booting:

- re-seat the memory modules
- re-seat the CPU
- remove or replace the MiniPCI modem/ethernet card

If, on the other hand, the hard drive LED briefly flashes once when pressing the power button (and no other signs of life is seen), then your system has what's known as the "Blink of Death". It's a motherboard problem that seems to be related to one of the power controller ICs. I've had some luck with getting such a system to eventually boot up if all sources of power is removed for several days (pull battery, disconnect AC adapter). The usual advice for this type of problem is to replace the motherboard.

Tried all the steps, apart from the cpu (don't have any thermal paste handy).
When i power it on, all the led's light up then the hdd flashes once (half a second or so) and thats it nothing happens.
When i removed all the ram sticks it did not show any life but there were beeps.

Now when i think about it i had an IBM desktop that had the exact problem, turned out a MOSFET had fried.
I guess its not looking good :(

We had an IBM tech tell us once at work to do what he called a "static release". I thought he was blowing smoke, but it did work a few times. Basically, you pull the power and battery, then hold the power button for ten seconds. Then, put the battery and power back in and boot it up.

Tried the static release, powering up w/o battery still doesn't boot.
Probably i will have to take it apart and look for any visible damage of IC's.
