Interest in 51nb.com's T50 motherboard

#1 Post by Medessec » Tue Dec 03, 2013 6:16 pm

Alright, for those who don't know, 51nb.com has released a "production version" of their modded "T50" motherboard(http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 15#p721915), which is an all new motherboard that can fit in the Thinkpad T4x chassis, and allows for you to use the T4x laptop frame(screen, casing, keyboard, UltraNav, etc.) with all new inside hardware including first-gen Core i-series Intel processors and DDR3 RAM.

Picture links for reference:
Full pic of the board: http://www.51nb.com/batch.download.php?aid=64195
Bottom of board: http://www.51nb.com/batch.download.php?aid=64196
BIOS screen: http://www.51nb.com/batch.download.php?aid=64248
System Stats screen:http://www.51nb.com/batch.download.php?aid=64254

It's a bit difficult for the guys at 51nb to get an exact idea about potential customers on this forum and indeed the Western World... with us all just squealing and running around and getting excited about this board. This poll can help give us a headcount of who would like one of these boards.

There are 5 options:
YES! I'll pay the full price(~$135) and International shipping costs.
Select this if you'd be willing to pay the current asking price of the board, as well as whatever other costs on an individual basis to get it overseas to you. Customs, VAT, Shipping, etc.
I'd like it better if the boards were shipped here and sold.
Select this if you were more comfortable having a member on this forum, or a member of 51nb who lives in your country or somewhere closer than China(and speaks English) buy a mass of the boards then sell them at a one-shot price with domestic shipping.
No. Too expensive
Select this if you feel like the board is too expensive with it's current list price.
No. Too risky
Select this if you feel like the price of the board is not worth the risk of the board possibly being DOA, or having problems that cannot be repaired.
Would like to wait and see what others think of the board
Select this if... well, self explanatory.

I understand this is a bit more complex than the standard "Yes, No", but I feel like this will give us an exact idea of what we think here of this board. This is a pretty radical modded part, so it is quite important... and this information could be very useful to those guys at 51nb, since they have to plan out manufacturing according to customers that will buy it. If someone doesn't agree with this poll, then we can delete it. But I think we need something like this.

Along with selecting an option, feel free to post why you chose that option, and your own personal interest in the board.

Speaking personally (i.e., not as an admin), I find this to be a valid poll and would be interested in buying one board to stick in a T41 shell that I have. I selected the second option (boards shipped here and then distributed) on the assumption that it would also then be possible to perform some sort of limited QC check prior to getting this in the purchaser's hands. I know that might entail more work for the stateside distributor but I would also be willing to pay a few more $$$ (say $30-$35) for a quick bench check that proves the board boots an OS.

edit: Also made this thread a Sticky.

I've chosen option # 1.

I'm set on buying three of these if at all possible, which comes to $400 + shipping or thereabouts...I'll survive if it turns out to be a waste.

Obviously, I hope that it won't.

I selected Option #1, as the price for the board itself has less significance. With the added cost of a decent CPU, RAM, a decent sized SSD, a high resolution LCD and maybe a used T43 as test bench, I am well above what I planned to spend on a used T410 this winter. But that purchase is put on hold for now. A T53 (It that ever happens) will be have brand new internals, and be just as powerful, except for being short of some ports.

I have selected option 1 but I want 2 boards. Maybe there should be a box to indicate the number of boards required. Also I would purchase a CPU I5 or I7, memory 4 or 8 gig and the pcie wireless card.
I am sure Hope or an associate can set this up on Ebay and make it profitable
I notice Hope has quoted 300 RMB for an I5 and 200 RMB for 4G of ram.
If anybody suggested I would be trying to decide between an I5 and an I7 a year ago for my T43's I would have said they were delusional

Frankly there is a trust issue here and I tend to treat this the same as "ajkula66" and lets just say I am fully onboard so to speak.

I voted #5

I'll wait for feedback for the experts in this forum to see how it works and what kind of mods are needed. I'm definitely in but I'm not in a hurry, I stopped being an early adopter years ago :D

This seems like a very interesting project. I was going to try a 15" T61 frankenpad mod but just by seeing this becoming a closer reality I might just sell my 'projects' and buy a decent T40 chassis and board.

I voted to wait/see what you guys end up with. But I might get too anxious.

I voted for the first option, and I would buy two boards.

However - given my limited time and computer smartz, my preferred option would be to mail my two T43s to someone and get two T50s back. That way I wouldn't have to source CPUs, memory, and so on.

Any chance that one of the well-known modding resellers on this site would buy a batch and offer this service?

Sounds like at least 20 boards would disappear easily into this forum. As I mentioned on another topic-I'd love to get my hands on a single board first to play around with, and my roommate wants a board too. If there's going to be another batch, I'm sure my roommate would buy then.

There's quite a few people on this forum who would definitely be able to provide such a service. You'd have to work out payment for the parts... but it could work. I can even do that-I've worked on HP laptops and other hardware with G1/G2 socket CPUs, and I know the insides of the T4x pretty well.

all parts upgraded comes to around $500-$600. i think thats steep for core 1st gen, not to mention risky. I selected too pricey but if the kinks are worked out in the board ill do the upgrade.

I'm in for one, despite the tradeoffs; that would definitely trounce a T42p or T43p (if these support Flexview).

I've done enough T42/T43 board/chassis swaps (amongst other machines) to be confident in doing one of these. If this is as good as it says it is, this sounds like a more permanent (and satisfying) fix to the T4x thermal issues.

The only reason I've chosen #1 as opposed to doing it second - hand is because I doubt anyone would be able to do so for Britain.

Otherwise I'd buy one soon, and leave it be until I had sufficent money to pay for the other components too. The processors seem really cheap.

(if these support Flexview).
As far as I know, they do. But from what I've read on lazycat's testimony and other problem lists with the board, the board has numerous glitches associated with screen brightness and graphics output, and these glitches are more provoked, if you have a higher resolution screen. We'll have to wait and see how they deal with those issues.
The processors seem really cheap.
I've pulled a full list of CPUs you'll be able to use as well as a brief estimate from ebay browsing, based off Buy it Now, and NOT Auctions:
i5-520M: $25-35
i5-540M: $30-40
i5-560M: $40-60
i5-580M: $80-200
i7-620M: $60-180
i7-640M: $180-300
The i5s are very cheap, and the i5-560M would be a fantastic compromise for this machine.

I have i7-620M just sitting around and waiting if the board comes for sale. DDR3 memory modules are dirt cheap (2GB modules can be had for €5-6 here used), what is that makes it so expensive??

If anyone in UK can help me with the finance, I think I'll be able to get 51nb to ship about 10 to UK. As a student I have only about 300 GPB disposable

P.S. the next modified board will be X60/X61 with third gen Core i (maybe i5 3320m or 3317U), according to current information there might be only one choice for CPU

Unfortunately I don't know any Brits personally who are interested in Thinkpads...

But they're making more? Because I've been waiting on word of getting one here in America... and I'd definitely be down to test them and help get them to others here in America. My roommate's been waiting too... no pressure though. Good to get some new word in regardless!

ESPECIALLY this- because this sounds absolutely awesome. Quite a jump from T4x chassis and first-gen Core i-series, but this sounds like an awesome mod regardless. With a 12" SXGA+ panel... that would be absolutely incredible. Speaking of that... sorry to ask-but were they thinking at all of doing such a mod for the Tablets?

I think they will make the board compatiable to all x60s x61s x60 x61 and x60t x61t, there's only minor difference in ordinary x boards and tablet boards anyway.

You, me and everybody man. We're all just playing the waiting game. Or the oblivious game, because I heard RMSMajestic was working to get some into his country(UK).

A friend of mine who recently got a T42p from a recycle center has come across info on the board and asked me about it. We're all sharing the anticipation!

interesting thread here..
it seems to have escaped my notice until just now..

I would think some sort of arrangement could be made with one of the long time vendors here on this forum..

but I think the makers would need to include some sort of test bed for those boards shipped here to be resold after local testing..

I've quite an interest in how the T50 board fares, especially since defective T4x and R5x units are rather cheap where I live. :D

Info about this T50 seems to have come to a standstill, I wonder why...
I'd love to get my hands on them!

It's a good question... the last I heard, they finished that very limited production run to Chinese customers of 51nb, for QA purposes of testing the practicality and long-term usability.

I also heard tidbits that there's the possibility they might commercialize the motherboard, in hopes of making a large quantity of the boards.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

and yes. I am a bit of a lunatic.
