Android for sure. I had an iPhone (from work) for a couple years and it was okay, but the apps and so forth were ... kind of limited in terms of the things they could do in some ways. The same apps for the compressible Android device, which my company switched all of us to a couple years ago, have better functionality and I find the settings/integrated features to be more to my taste and liking. Neither platform is without its quirks, but I find that I much prefer the quirks of the Android over the quirks of the iPhone.

Samsung's touchwiz just killed Android for me... all Samsung Phones need to be rooted to install non-Samsung rom to be usable IMO.... I tried out the LG G4 and love android on it.... it's more vanilla but in the end the iPhone still drew me away from all android phones and almost 2 years later is still my daily driver!

None of them. Windows 10 Mobile or nothing. Android is one big security hole beyond repair and Apple's illogical user interface with dead start screen like Palm OS 15 years ago is something I wouldn't be able to use at all. Not to mention Apple hardware is overpriced with outdated components (no OLED yet). I also consider dual sim support mandatory (all Microsoft Lumia phone have it), at least over here.

It is also well integrated with my other Windows PC devices. I am not willing to use any Google service at all because of massive privacy issues.

I know you will not agree :-)

BlackBerry 10 or traditional BlackBerry? I'm using a BlackBerry 10 Passport myself.

Is buying into the Microsoft ecosystem not just as bad as the Google ecosystem?

I would favour android over iPhone personally. I wouldn't even consider Windows phone, due to its poor UI/UX and lack of any real development community.

The android OS can be uncoupled from Google with relative ease (hence most companies building their OS on top of it, inc blackberry, Nokia etc). The ecosystem has a bigger development community, meaning wider range of applications, including those that wouldn't be allowed in the iPhone ecosystem, so for me it's a no brainer.

BlackBerry.

I use a Q10 for work and a 9900 for my private line. I'll stop using them when they lose connectivity (LTE and 3G respectively). I like a good keyboard, on my phone and my laptop. Removable batteries and expandable storage are also nice.

No. Microsoft provides regular monthly security updates for all their Windows 10 mobile devices (same as HP does, but not Acer). Microsoft also makes money by different things than selling targeted ads while for Google it is mandatory to survive.

In short, Microsoft is trying to keep the system secure while Android devices vendors don't care about the security at all. Also the Andriod thing was never meant to be secure at first place. It is cheap pathetic OS for displaying Google ads.

The 9900 is a nice phone. I think that the Classic would be a nice replacement for it. I moved from a BlackBerry Pearl 8120 to a Samsung SG3 and hated Samsung, so then moved to the Passport because of its specs.

The new "BlackBerry" where they switched over to Android with BlackBerry "apps" isn't really considered a BlackBerry. As for BlackBerry 10, it runs on QNX, which is/was developed in-house and added an Android runtime on top of that, so it's not built on top of Android.

To answer your question, a BlackBerry (but none of that TCL "BlackBerry").

iPhone.

You pay more, but you are guaranteed timely software and security updates for YEARS.

When people ask what to get anymore, unless they know why they NEED Android, I recommend they get an iPhone.

Before that, I was a BB10 fan. Like Microsoft in the mobile space, it's dead. I've also owned Jolla, Ubuntu, Firefox, and Android phones from about every manufacturer under the sun.

There are only two ecosystems left, and only one doesn't require you to buy a new phone every year to stay secure.

Without intending to cause offence, I think you are showing a trust in Microsoft that many would not, given the history of the company. Like Google, Microsoft also profit from advertising, in the form of the BingAds program etc. They've also come under fire for shady data collection themselves, including from its user-base of Windows 10 with the Telemetry saga. (It's well known, but here's a link that covers the basics. Clicky).

In relation to updates, this is also the case with Android.

I would be under no illusions about the data harvesting intentions of companies like the big G, but it would be naive to think that the other bit tech companies don't have the same intentions. Essentially, "we" are the product.

Also, Android was not created by Google, but by Andy Rubin, a couple of years before it became a google thing. :)

The Windows 10 telemetry saga is just clueless IT journalist crap (use translator to read this article). Microsoft also profit from advertising but it might be ~ 5% of the revenue while Google ~ 99%. That's the biggest difference and source of my Google services and products distrust.

Combining search engine queries data, crappy zero security OS user data, cloud/email data and even DNS queries data into one single package (Google) is something that everyone should be worried about. Add zero patches politics and always vulnerable and malware infected devices from factory ... I don't understand how one can use something that is so underdeveloped and dangerous in every aspect. The same applies to Facebook except it does not provide an "OS" yet.

Even Windows 95 was more secure by design than any Android.

Though I'd love a Ford Explorer. Or maybe a Honda Element just for the shear qwertiness of it. :D

A Ford Explorer would give you some huge problems in Ireland, as it's 5 liter engine would cause a humongous amount of motor tax (€1809 = $1945 per year).
Not to mention the rather high fuel price in Ireland of €1.32 per liter / €4.99 per US gallon ($1.42 / $5.37).
Not to mention the astronomic insurance rates...

It would probably be more like €2400 yearly to tax really (we have a crazy road tax situation here). It's engine wouldn't attract me much, but the size and space would be handy sometimes. I've had cars that cost as much to tax in the past though. Pretty much anything performance orientated with a 2.5 or larger engine gets super expensive.

Mine's a "measly" 4 liter, unlike your old one...which was a heck of a beautiful vehicle, nevertheless.

This.

When I went back home last year - for the first time in 17 years - I was absolutely floored by both the fuel prices and the lack of (free) parking space in my hometown. I won't be driving *anything* once I retire and move back, that much I'm certain of.

When I first arrived in the US, I was equally shocked at the fact that you could fill up a family sedan for 20$. That, and the lack of any Diesel cars.

To get back to topic, I'm sticking with Windows Phone/Mobile. I tried Android, and it was the worst phone experience I ever had. Would rather use my old Samsung flip phone. I'd be open towards iOS on an iPhone, but they don't offer dual-sim. I'm currently using a Lumia 730 and a 1020 as backup, but I'll be upgrading to a 950 soon.

Yes, logical conclusion :) Lumia 950 is sold out over here everywhere, including "unofficial" distribution from other EU countries, you can get (now overpriced) 950XL from Microsoft Store only. Meanhile the HP Elite x3 gets 25% discount in the US.

I rarely use my cellphone, probably once or twice a month, IF I remember to take it with me.
I have a "postpaid" plan from Consumer Cellular, which means: no contract, just pay the bill when it comes, plus you get a free phone thrown in as well.

I'll probably just get a 950 from eBay or ask a forum member if they have one to sell. I don't mind used as long as it's in good condition.

I also don't understand why pay as you go doesn't exist in the US. Only T-Mobile seems to offer something like that (which is the plan I'm on at the moment), but even if you don't use your phone you have to pay 3$ every month which is just stupid. I recently discovered Mint SIM and will probably switch to them next year. I'll have to pay 20$ a month, but then I at least get the unlimited calls and data, which is what I expect to get for that kind of money. Honestly, when I first walked into the T-Mobile shop here and saw that plans started at 40$ per month, I almost died of a heart attack.

Indeed. I require -- not just prefer but require huge giant phones. iPhones max out at 5.5", Windows Phones at 6.0", and BlackBerry are even worse. These days the smallest size I can tolerate is 6.3". My current primary phone is Huawei's Honor X2 with 7.0" 1200x1920, and secondary phone is the Xiaomi Mi Max with 6.44" 1080x1920. My previous primary phone was the Samsung Tab S (international model which has phone functionality) with 8.4" 1600x2560, but found it a tad too large.

I have a thread listing the phones I've owned: http://www.forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopi ... 8&t=117253
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (1920x1280, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (1920x1280, 2.00lb);

Isn't the resolution / pixel density a bit low for a phone ? I have both Lumia 650 (5" 1280x720 - 290 PPI) and Lumia 950 (5.2" 2560x1440 - 560 PPI) and I can clearly see the difference from typical viewing distance.

There is chinese 7" 1920x1200 Cube WP10 4G Phablet for $110 but it has zero support (no Windows 10 Mobile updates) and bad LTE bands support.
