Help!!! Windows 98SE installed on a Thinkpad T43
Help!!! Windows 98SE installed on a Thinkpad T43
Dear People
I bought an IBM Thinkpad T43.
I formatted hard disk (along with Windows XP) and installed Windows 98 SE for retro gaming.
It booted up beautifully, everything was churning up nicely.
Except for one thing......I am unable to install the driver for Ati Mobility Radeon X300. Now I am stucked in Standard Graphics PCI Adapter (VGA)640x480 16 colours.
Believe me. I have scouted every possible ATI control catalyst driver supporting Ati Mobility Radeon X300 that runs under Windows 98/ME and even XP driver.
I even skipped the control center as I am contented with just the bare driver only.
But each time when I tried to install the control center, it will say
Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software.
But each time when I tried to install the driver only (from driver folder), it will says
"ISLAYER.DLL NOT not loaded into memory.
Error Number 0x80040702
Description: Failed to load dll: ISLAYER
Setup will now terminate"
or
INF error
Video driver not found
Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard driver before running setup.
I am suspecting Windows 98 SE is not detecting my ATI Radeon Mobility X300 chip even though I have updated the latest intel chipset driver. But when I use Everest (System info tool), it could identify that my video adapter is ATI Radeon Mobility X300.
I have scout through the forum and it seems that a forumerer from UK "Ebony Ivory" actually faced a same problem like I am but she actually tweak the inf file or something and successfully install the driver on her T43 (Pls refer http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=33287) . But her last active is in 2006 and I cannot contact her.
Can anyone help me out?

Welcome to the forum.
Ebony Ivory was a HE named Brian, who left here 9 years ago.
D/L this: http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/ ... tion/3417/
Go into Device Manager and delete everything to do with Display/Video, then reboot.
If it says "Found new hardware" or similar, cancel that.
Instead try and install the above.
Good luck.

Really appreciate your reply, and thank you for highlighting Ebony Ivory gender. Lol
Unfortunately, this did not work either. Same error

I suspect the driver did not support Windows 98 because I can only see "CP_2K" and "CP_XP" in the driver folder.
But anyway, thank you for your time taken to reply to me.
Regards and may all the best things in life come in your way.
Thank you

Click on the Drivers link at the top of this page, select T43 and then Category "Display and video"
You'll find drivers there for oldies such as OS/2 and NT, tried those?

Re: Help!!! Windows 98SE installed on a Thinkpad T43
I ran into a similar issue attempting to install 98SE on a T43 (I also tried Windows Me) regarding graphic drivers (all other drivers worked but the 2200BG wireless and the ATI video)... ended up using a version of SciTech Display Doctor to get better graphics; in addition, it did not shut down properly (would get stuck on the "Please wait while Windows shuts down" screen) and I had to press Power to turn off
2000 ran pretty well on my T43 however, had no missing drivers or red Xs in Device Manager after installing all drivers

I don't know if this will work, but try grabbing the drivers for the desktop version of the X300 and running Mobilitymodder on them. (You can extract them and run MM on another machine if necessary.)

Re: Help!!! Windows 98SE installed on a Thinkpad T43
I believe that this was a common issue with W98. It occurred frequently on my own Gateway tower. FWIW, the way I got around it would be to log off Windows, then once the Windows sign-on/splash screen appeared, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and then select the shutdown option.danikayser84 wrote:<snip>... in addition, it did not shut down properly (would get stuck on the "Please wait while Windows shuts down" screen) and I had to press Power to turn off

Re: Help!!! Windows 98SE installed on a Thinkpad T43
Hi, do you think is there any possibility to contact ATI to come up with a X300 driver for T43? I mean it is such a good machine to be resting under the dust. If we can get the display to work properly, we will be able to pass down an important piece of computer history to the future generation.danikayser84 wrote:I ran into a similar issue attempting to install 98SE on a T43 (I also tried Windows Me) regarding graphic drivers (all other drivers worked but the 2200BG wireless and the ATI video)... ended up using a version of SciTech Display Doctor to get better graphics; in addition, it did not shut down properly (would get stuck on the "Please wait while Windows shuts down" screen) and I had to press Power to turn off

Re: Help!!! Windows 98SE installed on a Thinkpad T43
Hi, can we get the Forum Admin to help us send an email to "Ebony Ivory", requesting a copy of the ati mobility radeon x300 video driver that he had tweaked? He might have left here 9 years ago, but there is a chance his email address remains the same.RealBlackStuff wrote:Click on the Drivers link at the top of this page, select T43 and then Category "Display and video"

Your advice using the SciTech driver works! For the first time in many months I had tears of joy rolling in my eye. When Windows 98 started to load in 1024x768 resolution, I had to yell to let off my happiness. Thank you so much. To those who feel despair, do not give up. God always make sure there is an angel around us to touch us. Today my angel is Mr danikayser84.
Btw, 2 more questions for my Thinkpad T43.
I. Any wireless lan driver that can work with windows 98?
2. Can you get old dos games to play the sound/music? (No, I don't want to use dosbox)?

You should be able to modify your autoexec.bat file to include flags that grant Sound Blaster emulation in DOS mode.
Here's some info on it, and those files...

It works perfectly, it's how I got drivers for my T60p in Windows 7. I'm not sure if this process is applicable for Windows 98, though.Milktea wrote:Hmm.... I am not sure if that will work very well. Just to side track a little, wow its amazing you've got 9 laptops. Why do you need so many of them by the way, if you don't mind me asking?Kasm279 wrote:It works perfectly, it's how I got drivers for my T60p in Windows 7. By the way thanks for you advice. I will follow your advice and grab driver from desktop, although it is rather difficult from the place I come home to find a desktop that utlilizes Ati X300 video card.Kasm279 wrote:It works perfectly, it's how I got drivers for my T60p in Windows 7. Hi just to let you know I tried to add in the set blaster command in autoexec.theterminator93 wrote:You should be able to modify your autoexec.bat file to include flags that grant Sound Blaster emulation in DOS mode.

Unfortunately this didn't work.
I think Windows 98 is too smart to let a simple autoexec command to fool it thinking soundmax is sound blaster.
Anyway appreciate your help.

Have you tried the ATI Catalyst 6.2 drivers? They are the last for Windows 98.
