IBM R40 (2722) CPU Replacement Baninas to Dothan possible???

I got an IBM R40 2722 (newest BIOS) with an existing Banias M-705 1,5 GHz.

Now i bought a M-765 2,1 GHz Dothan CPU for replacing my old cpu.

After installing the new processor, the notebook will not boot anymore. The notebbok powers on, but the screen is black.

As far as I see, the bios does not recognize the cpu. But a already got the newest bios from the IBM website.

Is there any patch or beta Bios for getting the Dothan CPU working in an IBM R40?

I think your problem is the chipset. I believe your R40 uses Intel's 845 chipset, while the 765 your are trying to install works with the 855 chipset. I don't believe the chipsets to be compatible or replaceable. I think you are limited to Mobile Intel Celeron processors or Mobile Pentium 4 Processor - M processors. Sorry, that Centrino ain't gonna work. I'm sure you can buy a P4-M 2.6 GHz processor for what you can sell the 765 for but it won't be as fast or battery efficient.

He has a 2722-xxx R40 so it has an Intel 855PM chipset. So Centrino should work fine.

What probably happened is you bought a 533fsb 2.1ghz Centrino that only works on the Sonoma systems (Intel 915).

You can provide the stepping (i.e. SLXXX) which is printed on the chip and I can confirm, or you can judge by the price you paid 2.1ghz 400FSB cpus are a lot more $$$. In the $500 range.

For sure I did buy the right cpu.

My chipset is a Intel Odem i855PM.

My old cpu is a Mobile Intel Pentium M 705 1.5 GHz Banias (SL6F9), 400 MHz FSB 478 Pin uFCPGA.

And my new CPU Pentium M 765 2.1 GHz Dothan (SL7V3) 400 MHz FSB 478-pin Micro-FCPGA . It is an original IBM FRU build for T42 Systems.

Look here and you will see the the chipset is suposed to be the right:

It is for sure the right cpu for my mainboard, but I think the Bios does not know this kind of cpu. A bios update would help for sure, but I think IBM will not even build one supporting Dothan cpus!

I don't see why it wouldn't work otherwise. If you have the latest BIOS/Embeded controller then there's not much lese left to try.

No, I think that the processor microcode is not implimented yet into the bios.

Because of knowing this, I hope that some freak is able to patch the bios. In former times someone patched the R40 Bios also, for making the change of the wlan card possible....

With BIOS update 1PET59WW - 1.27 for IBM R40 (2722) there have been some new CPU Microcode implimented. I run on version 1.30 Bios. So the newer CPUs has to be implimented yet. Am I right?

You seem to know exactly what's what.

Why don't you just call IBM and ask them if they plan to release a BIOS to support the Dothan.

I don't think that they will release a new Bios anyway. Because the R40 series are designed to run with max. 1.7 GHz Banias and never ever with Dothan cpus. So why should IBM do this? That my problem....

But I wonder about why the M-765 is supported by the T42 series. This series is as old as the R40....
