I have an old t40 2373-94u and i wanted to upgrade my VERY slow 4200 80 gig to a new 7k100...

i've been reading some of the posts and i just needed a pretty quick answer on how to install the new drive so that it is loaded with factory defaults.

1. i have recovery disks that ordered from IBM for free when i first got the machine in 2003. my question about these disks is that they hold very old IBM access software. Is there a way to get recovery disks/create recovery disks right now so that when i reload i can have more updated software without having to download a ton of things?

2. all i have to do is put in the new drive and boot from the recovery cd and it will load everything onto the new HD? including the partition with recovery?

THanks!!!

uhmm, are you happy with the current OS and how well it is working..?
if SO, then just clone that existing drive to the new HDD when it arrives..
if you need direction for this, see below..

yes..
it is a little tricky, but just let it do its thing and after several reboots it will hand you the original factory preload..

but for me, i LOVE Acronis True Image for making a copy of the OS and restoring it after a disaster..

what do you mean a little tricky?

and i have acronis true image 8... i bought it a while ago and never used it. i am happy with the current load of my winXP, but i feel like it's a bit slow and overloaded...i would like a fresh start. would a fresh start make a better or is the upgrade from my old HD going to be plenty enough?

Then you can use and external enclosure and clone your current drive.

i got the new HD....but my old recovery disks dont fully work, they stop reading on disk 2.

now the new drive has partial install of recovery on it....how do i erase everything again and second, what options do i have now?

i still have my original drive and it works fine. i dont really want to clone it because the install is kind of messed up.

any thoughts?

I've got some T40 recovery disks I can copy for you.

Cost is the cost of the media and shipping.

PM me.

when i run PC doctor from disk 1 of my recovery disks and check my new Hard Drive, there are 4 partitions on it...did the recovery do this?

before i run recovery on the new HD when i get my CDS (since my current ones dont read) do i need to do anything with the new HD?
