I'm thinking of buying this but I'm concerned that the text will be too small to read with such a high resolution display. What do people think of this display?

Also, does the T42p have the dreaded fan noise issue?

Thanks

I find the text size on my A31p's UXGA screen to be a very acceptable and easy to read size. Having moved from a 14.1" XGA to the 15" SXGA+ screen in my T42, I, like you, was concerned that the higher res would take me a while to get used to, but I almost immediately adjusted and adore the clarity and natural text size. It made the progression to UXGA seamless.

Plus you'll have the added advantage of an IPS Flexview screen with wide viewing angle. Simply type Flexview into the search bar and you'll be able to read many testimonials as to how great such a LCD panel is.

As long as you have good vision, I can guarantee that you'll thrive on the opportunity you have in front of you.

Also, the T42p shouldn't have the fan issue - most complaints about fan noise seem to arise from the T43.

I've had 14.1" XGA, SXGA+ and now 15"UXGA. The Flexview UXGA is fantastic. Precise and detailed to the point where I don't notice the smaller font until I look at the XGA and think how disgustingly big it is.

Fwiw I thought the SXGA+ was hard to look at and it bothered my eyes. The UXGA flexview is leaps and bounds better even though everything was smaller still. It's a quality of picture that makes it work.

I've been thinking of buying up another T42p just to put away for when this one dies I like it so much.

I love the fine resolution of the screen, but for my eyes (I'm at the tri-focal stage) the print is a bit small.

I bump up the dot pitch to 150% of normal, and that makes it work for me.

Don't know about fan noise in T42. My T43p fan is a bit loud, but there is software to cut that down a whole lot.

On the font size....I just use large or extra large fonts and make other adjustments. Works great, looks great. Larger fonts in XP look good, Larger fonts in Vista look even better.

High res screens are oh so much easier on the eyes...

The issue of UXGA text readability has been discussed quite a bit on the forum; e.g. see the thread UXGA Text-Size Readability where you will find a suggestion to search for ClearType. Doing that, many useful references will come up, incl. the thread T43p text is too small. Help w Optimum display setting. If you follow the advice there (adjusting font size, increase DPI setting, enabling ClearType), I trust that most people will become (very!) satisfied with an UXGA FlexView/IPS display. I know for sure, that I wouldn't want to be without mine! :-)

As for the fan noise, I have the impression that by far most of the T42p's don't have this problem. My T42p (2373-Q1U) is very silent, which is also a result of having installed Notebook Hardware Control, with the appropriate ACPI-file.

You might want to read about T42p's vs. T43p's fan noise in the thread The search for the ultimate Thinkpad T4x - The start and end. More info about T42p fan noise can probably be found if searching in this forum...

BR,

Johan

If you prefer SXGA+ screens to XGA screens in 14" TPs, you probably won't have any problems using a 15" UXGA screen.

However, some of my friends do have difficulties reading texts on a 14" SXGA+. I suggest you to take a look at both, which can be easily found (in TPs or other branded notebooks).
