I recently joined because I had mysterious battery drainage during hibernation (aka. suspend to hdd) with T61 and Windows Vista. I asked about it on the T6x zone here

Since then I tested this accurately and it looks like that when I put my T61 on hibernation and A/C is connected, Vista (or maybe BIOS in contribution of Vista?) doesn't shutdown everything, as it should be, since suspend to hdd is basically same as shutdown.

Approx 0,5watts is still consumed and if I take my laptop off the A/C it will start consuming battery with that level. With my 6-cell battery that means about 1% per 1hour of drain, with WLAN switch off (I haven't yet tried if WLAN affects it).

However, if I take battery off for a couple seconds after suspending and put it back on, battery won't drain at all.

Same thing if I but it to suspend when it's already working from battery. No drain what so ever.

It seems that this is actually Vista problem, since other people have had same kind of experience with other laptops as seen here.

I didn't find anything about this here, so I thought about making all of you Vista users aware of this.

I also found this Some x61s user complaining about same thing.

So for me it's now obvious that it is Vistas fault, but apparently Microsoft doesn't care or doesn't know about this... so maybe Vista users should test this so we could see how common this is.. and report it to Microsoft so that they would fix this problem.

Check if you've enabled "Hybrid Sleep".

yeah, i was gonna say that's Vista's hybrid sleep. It doesn't hibernate at first, only after say 3hrs or so then it acutally completely shuts the system off. Loosing 3% of your battery wont kill ya before it actually fully shuts down. It's nice IMO that it does that because booting up the laptop each time is a doozy. Defeats the purpose of a laptop if you ask me. My system usually just goes to sleep and stays there till i wake it up again. Instant ON is what it's about :)

AFIAK, Hybrid Sleep, by default, will not go into Hibernation after 3-hour. That is, unless you've set your system to do so.

Hybrid Sleep will only use the image on the drive, when the content in the memory is lost. For desktop, that means yanking the plug. For laptop, that means both yanking the plug and the battery.

I read in several places that Hybrid Sleep is actually designed for desktop, but I found it an attracting feature for laptop as well. Probably a discussion for another topic through.

Nice weekend to all.

I noticed same power draining when resuming from hibernation.

It occurs if you enter in hibernation with AC plugged in. I think Windows keeps power to some devices to restore faster from hibernation, Windows supposes the power cord will continue attached.

If I enter to hibernation directly from battery, battery draining is minimum. You can unplug power cord while enter in hibernation, before moon icon starts blinking, and it works.

That's nice to know.. thanks.

I've removed battery after hibernation for couple seconds, but that's more easier.

And for all others above: this is most likely a bug in vista. What I have done:

1. disabled all wake-up-on stuff from BIOS
2. disabled all wake-up-on stuff from Windows. Control Panel -> System -> Device Control (or something like that) for every device except keyboard
3. checked that hybrid sleep is not in use
4. updated everything
5. disabled ability to wake up from all scheduled tasks

So if someone has any other ideas what could cause this, please let us know.

I also recommend to everybody check their wake-up-on stuff from windows, since e.g if wake-up-on LAN is enabled from Vista and disabled from BIOS, it will still work! And it will wake up from hibernation also. And these wake-up-on stuff are enbaled on all kind of various devices by default. Even the 56k modem had it enabled.

Just did a test another day.

1. Plugged-in --> Hibernate --> Unplug --> No battery drain.
2. Unplugged --> Hibernate --> No battery drain.

I've personally disabled the wake-up functions of the USB mouse and LAN adapter.

I helped a friend debug this exact issue and we/he tried gobs of things. In the end he discovered it was the expansion port that was responsible. Once he unplugged it the power drain was gone for good

which expansion port is this cause i am getting the same problem

btw apparently lenovo has found what the cause of the hibernation drain is:
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/30715369/heavy-battery-drain-after.aspx

gets even better too. u can check if your device has any wake on power devices by using this command in dos

powercfg /devicequery wake_armed

for me my mouse and my high defeinition audio controller were on wake. apparently if u disable the high definition audio controller some user had no more problems with the power drain.

Also apparently lenovo has come out with a patch for this.

"However, all is not lost, Lenovo has come out with a patch called powerpatch
to stop battery drain during hibernation. The patch will work with most
ThinkPad PC installed with Vista."

where on earth is this powerpatch i have been looking all over for it

If all else fails: check whether deactivating "High Definition Audio Controller" under "System Devices" stops the battery drain. If so, take a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970030/en-us (released on 2009.07.02)

After monts of desperation it finally saved my T61 from loosing its charge VERY fast...

Thank you for the link. This seems to solve the problem.

I never use hibernate or shutdown on my computers. They all go into sleep.
