I've paired my Motorola HS810 headset with my T42, but now what? It shows up as an audio device, but I can't see any way to make use of it. I've updated to all the latest drivers (thanks to that new handy-dandy IBM Software Installer), but the T42 acts like it does when there is no headset available (except for the headset showing up in bluetooth devices). Am I expecting too much out of the built-in bluetooth or am I missing some crucial component? :?:

Check your device manager to see if Microsoft Enumerator is listed under the Bluetooth Devices listing. If it is you'll have to get rid of that.

WARNING: Before you continue I strongly recommend that you unpair all your bluetooth devices from your T42. Go your bluetooth setup in WinXP and delete all your paired BT devices.

This is how:

1. Turn on the Bluetooth radio.
2. Check Device Manager to see if Microsoft Enumerator is listed under Bluetooth Radio. If it is, you must update the driver for IBM Integrated Bluetooth III.
3. Find or download the IBM Bluetooth II software. Here's the link: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... g=en&cc=US
4. Run and extract the files from bthwxp1o.exe (I recommend that you keep the default extraction directory).
5. Do NOT install the software package. Go to your device manager and right-click on IBM Integrated Bluetooth III and click on update driver.
6. When WinXP asks to connect to Windows Update for the driver click on "No, not this time." and click next.
7. Choose "Install from a list or choose a specific locations" then click next.
8. Choose "Do not search. I will choose the driver to install." then click next.
9. Click on "Have Disk..." then Browse and find the directory that you extracted the downloaded files to.
10. Choose the file btwusb.inf and Open and just go on with the rest of the installation.

Don't worry about the driver not being signed by Microsoft or anything. Everything should go as planned and you shouldn't see the Microsoft Enumerator listing anymore. Go ahead and pair your devices and everything. It should work fine. If you run in to anymore problems, let us know. Good luck.

Best regards,
Chris

P.S. Hmm... I was wondering if maybe we could make this a sticky or something. I'm willing to rewrite the procedures if anyone wants and if anyone else has any input or comments let me know.

Yes, you are right. I have been using my sonyericsson bluetooth headset for voice chat for quiet some time. Its very much possible. I guess you have to rewrite it so that he can understand and do it himself.

use this link from ms on how to disable microsoft bluetooth support:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;889814
and install IBM Bluetooth Software mentioned above.

this way is faster and MS-approved

Microsoft Bluetooth software doesn't support all bluetooth profiles you need to use your head-set. But Widcomm Software (that one from IBM) does.

Yeah, I use a SE HBH-300 now. I used to use the Moto HS810 but I like the SE much better. I use it for Ventrillo and other stuff like web meetings and such. If everyone would like, I can rewrite the procedure.

I have been trying to get a no-name headset working on and off for some time now. I installed the IBM Bluetooth package successfully and found I was able to get pairing with the device but the system never used the headset.

I found these instructions and found that BOTH the Microsoft Enumerator and the IBM Bluetooth were installed. So I removed the Microsoft package and reinstalled the IBM package according to the instructions. However, when I search for the Bluetooth device it finds nothing now. AS I said before removing the Microsoft package I was able to find the Bluetooth device and achieve pairing whereas now I get nothing.

In the Device Manager it reports that the IBM Bluetooth is working and enabled. But in the Bluetooth config dialog (where the device search and pairing is done) it does not report anything under the "Hardware" tab.

So now I am mystified. Any help?

Well, "progress" of a sort. I removed and reinstalled the IBM package twice now. Running "Setup" results in a "failure to install the driver because the INF may have been written for Windows 95" but the rest of the packag installed properly and it configured the Bluetooth for all the correct functions (audio, serial port, print manager, etc)

I ran Upgrade Driver and manually selected the 'bbwusb.inf' from the c:\drivers\win\bdcact directory. This installed OK and the Bluetooth Radio appears functional.

If I run the "Add Bluetooth Device" wizard it reports that no Bluetooth devices are found in the search. But if I right-click on the "Bluetooth on {machine name} icon in the taskbar and select "Quick Connect/Quick Connect/Find Device" the search reports my headset is found. If I then say "Connect" it tries to identify the services in the device and reports no services found.

I only have one Bluetooth device so I can't tell if this is peculiar to this device but before I removed the Microsoft Enumerator I was able to Find and Add this device and it's services --- but they never worked. Now that I've removed the Microsoft package it doesn't find any Bluetooth devices!

Yeah, I wouldn't try to find a device through the "Add Bluetooth Device" Wizard; it's not that I don't trust it, because I really don't, but I have always gotten it to work through the Bluetooth Icon everytime. :)

Thanks. I just don't understand why it finds the device in Quick Connect but it can't find any services on the device.

No services? Hmmm...I have only connected to one bluetooth device so far that didn't have services; that was a Treo 650. I would like to know what you can do in that case. Obviously, you need some form of software/service/whatever to use it as a bluetooth headset....but shouldn't those already be on the headset and link up through bluetooth?

What is equally odd is that when the Microsoft enumerator was installed it found devices AND serices using the regular discovery dialog. The thing never worked, but the system had no trouble finding it.

Now that I've got the Thinkpad configured properly it can't find devices in the wizard but does in the Quick Connect. But it doesn't find any services.

Very irritating. I'm imagining how some poor schnook who know very little about PCs handles these kinds of glitches and what he/she does to recover from it.

Yet more strangeness.

Today for some reason the T40 and the headset decided to talk to each other. I was able to create pairing and "connect" the headset. But there is no, nada, zip, zilch audio. In "Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio" it now show Bluetooth Audio in the list of available devices and when the Bluetooth is connected it shows it as the selected device. But there is no audio anyway and I can't find a way to get it to do so.

The quest for Bluetooth continues.

Interesting; I have to see if I can get my hands on a Bluetooth headset to try this out. :)

Curioser and curioser.

Today everything works fine. No changes just suddenly decide to start working.

I can hardly wait to see what happens tomorrow. At this rate by the end of the year I should be able to listen in on the Space Station :-)

Sometimes, that's how things work. *shrugs*

NASA, however, does use a Thinkpad on the Space Shuttle. So outer space isn't that strange to the Thinkpads :)

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/history/shu ... s-tpcs.htm

"Overall, the IBM ThinkPad 760ED notebook computer had near-perfect space flights for an off-the-shelf computer. Based on the data gathered, the computer and its associated systems are ready to support both Space Shuttle and International Space Station operations."

:D

Thanks ... um ... guys, I used this thread as inspiration to try to rebuild my BT stuff. I'd updated drivers and such, but registry hacking had yielded one or two of the links/uses that XP has for Bt devices inoperable.

So I uninstalled the ThinkPad Bluetooth IV software, version 3.0.1.918. I actually had it two places on my hard drive. Rebooted. Reinstalled the Thinkpad Bluetooth Software... . and the dreaded Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator came along for the ride, creating the equally ugly little red BT icon in the Windows Dessert Tray (some call it the system tray, others the notification area). BT card on, working fine. As per the instructions above, right-clicking the MS Bluetooth Enumerator in Device manager (DEVMGMT.MSC), "Update driver," and pointing it at my IBM Bluetooth software folder ... does nothing. But Right-clicking the "ThinkPad Integrated Bluetooth IV" under Bluetooth Devices, "Update Driver," and pointing it at the folder,... and several things updated for 15-20 seconds, and the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator went away.

So, with a clean slate, I verified with teh Bluetooth Setup Wizard that all BT services were up and configured to the default settings. Set the BT headset to pair with a new "phone" (important point here), and told the Bluetooth Setup Wizard to find new devices and discover services (you could as easily tell it a) to setup an audio headset and search for devices that support that, or b) tell it to find audio devices and discover all services on them). It found my headset (Sony HBH-200, by the way), discovered its service, and paired up after providing the headset's PIN. Voila. And, when they're connected, it works.

Did the same with the phone (Nokia 3650). Sending a pic from the phone works like a charm. And vice versa.

Now the only gotcha is that when I want to use it with the phone again, I have to reset it to pair with another "phone." Not sure what this does with the pairing from my TP. Will report later, after some supper and Star Trek Season One break.

It is indeed unintuitive. Thanks for Microsoft's (really, XP SP2's) weird way of "discovering" a new device after you've installed the software, you have to update the device to "fix" XP's glitch. :P Chris, feel free to incorporate any of this into your sticky/instructional. I think you're 80% of the way to a very fine how-to FAQ. ;)

My lord. I thought this thread was tucked away neatly in the forum's database. I also forgot about the thread and unfortunately, never came to rewriting the how-to-bluetooth (got a nice ring to it, don't ya think?). I would like some help but I just haven't had the time to come on the forum and keep up with everything and everyone. I just moved about 2 months ago and everything is hectic even though I am in my winter break from college. I'd gladly rewrite the how-to if anyone is better at grammar/writing/etc than I am. I'll keep tabs on the thread, just let me know when and how. :-)

Best regards,
Chris

P.S. Happy belated holidays. Hope everyone has a safe, healthy, prosperous and HAPPY new year.

Haha... If you want to draft it up in Wordpad/Word, and send it to me for a 'proofread/editor' whack, I'd be happy to. PM me for private mailing address.

And I should assert, things like moving and your higher edumacation take precedence over some little FAQ. Take your time. No one's in peril waiting for your tutorial. ;)

Hello all

i found this thread while searching for pairing a Treo 700 with my T43.

i have followed some suggestions including getting rid of the M$ stack. i am able to pair my mouse and the Treo as well. But strangely when i go to "My Bluetooth Places" and select the Treo, i find that it only offers "OBEX Object Push" and "Voice Gateway" profiles. It is not offering "Serial Port" profile.

I think part of the problem is that the Treo is only allowing me to choose COM0,COM4,COM7 and COM8 ports in its "Incoming Ports" selection whereas the local bluetooth service on my T43 is running on COM5. I cannot change the local service to COM0,4,7 or 8.

Anyone else running into similar problems?

David, I have Bluetooth IV 3.0.1.917 , and want to uninstall it to pair to my BT headset.

Which Thinkpad BT software did you actually install? Just wondering if this works, because the T43 is not listed as being "compatible".

Thanks

I have IV 3.0.1.918.

I couldn't tell you which software is correct for your hardware. I'd say use Access IBM to determine which card you have, and then search Lenovo for software/drives based on that hardware info.

New Bluetooth driver has been released for T43/T43p. The version is 4.0.1.3000. i installed it and tried to pair my Treo 700w but still no luck. Even if you enter the correct passkey on both Treo and the Thinkpad it errors out.

Maybe it's a stupid way, but have you tried manually adding COM port until COM port 7 so that they can match? That's what I did for my Xphone so that they can use bluetooth activesync

I had bad luck with the new driver -- BT radio would turn off immediately after trying to turn it on - and rolled back to the version I mentioned before. YMMV.

Sometimes newer ain't better.

Yup tried it. Added COM Port 8 in local services. And i can discover my PC from the Treo and it lists Serial Port as an available service offered by the PC. I choose COM Port 8 as the outgoing port on the Treo. Try to initiate ActiveSync from it, but it says no recognizble PC available to sync with, when in fact my PC shows up in the Bluetooth partnerships of the Treo.

Very frustrating. Reading the Treocentral and HoFo forums it seems that people are having problems with USB syncing but works fine for their Bluetooth and IR. Just opposite for me. USB is the only way i have been able to do it.
