Re: Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

I do not have such issues. The only systems that crashed and lost files as a result were DOS and Windows 3.1. Nothing since. No data or documents lost since.

Re: Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

I am curios to how you do the quality rating I use Reliability Monitor and track the number of "Stopped Working" errors over time. On my ThinkPad X230, Windows 8 / 8.1 recorded a hardware error for the video component monthly for two years. Drivers did not help. I upgraded to Windows 10 on this sam...

Re: Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

Quality wise, Win8 was on par with windows 7, and still pretty good if you can handle the interface craziness. I used Windows 8 / 8.1 for a couple of years on a ThinkPad X230. I put a classic interface on it. Based on Reliability History, I have the following quality ratings. Windows 7 > 90% Window...

Re: Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

Telemetry give ZERO access to your data. They do not and cannot access your data. The idea that they can is nothing more than a news myth from reporters who have nothing to do with their time. There is NO hard evidence of any kind from anywhere that Microsoft has collected private financial or other...

Re: Telemetry (spying) now introduced in W7 and W8.x through WU

Microsoft is using this method to determine faults and errors and fix them. This never happened with Windows 8 originally and it was the lowest quality system Microsoft ever introduced. They are using telemetry with Windows 10 and the last two builds (.351 is the latest several days ago) have become...

Re: The worst has happened: MS removing GroupPolicy options for Win10pro

I'm not budging off Windows 7 (which is still the most-used OS as it stands). I'm waiting to see where the Win10 train is going and the increasing 'issues' people have with the forced updates If you run the newest versions of Windows 10, you do have some flexibility of when to install updates. I ha...

Re: PIC 18LF4550 Drivers for Windows 10 OS

It is not likely anything that works in XP will work in Windows 10. I think you need to give that idea up. If your machine will run Windows 10, do a bare metal install of Windows 10.

I have not ANY machine that runs XP also run Windows 10. Not any of mine or any client at all.

Re: The worst has happened: MS removing GroupPolicy options for Win10pro

you could prevent Windows 10 from automatically downloading and installing promoted apps like Candy Crush Soda Saga

Use Remove-AppxPackage from an admin Powershell command to remove apps you do not want.

I have also found that apps removed from the start menu and not used do not do anything.

GWX as posted above works a treat on my Windows 7 virtual machine, on a Windows 7 M90p desktop I sold, and on some other machines. I have not tried Never 10 - no need to.

My working machines (M73 Desktop and X1 Carbon laptop) are both Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and both work a treat. No issues.

I just purchased the X1 Carbon 4th generation machine and am very happy with it.

i7 with 16 GB memory
1 TB Samsung PCI-e SSD drive (faster than SATA)
Standard 1920x1080 resolution screen.
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (which I had been using for over a year on my ThinkPad X230)

Make sure that Hibernation and Hybrid sleep are both OFF. Only use Suspend. I have an X14th generation with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit set as I just suggested and it suspends and wakes just fine.

Re: X1C i7 3rd gen or i5 4th gen? help

I just got a 4th generation X1 configured as follows: 16 GB of memory (because I run virtual machines) and so then i7 needed for 16 GB of memory. i5 restricts you to 8 GB. 1 TB PCI-e SSD (faster than SATA SSD) and 1 TB was only $90 more than 500 GB PCI-e SSD drive. Intel 8260 Wireless AC adapter. No...

Re: Want to buy Lenovo Win 7 Discs

It's my understanding that the advantage of 64 bit is that it will handle having multiple programs/windows running at the same time better than 32 bit. A much more important advantage of 64-bit is that it can handle more than 3 GB of memory. When I run across 32-bit machines today (rare, actually),...

If your X230 is running Windows 7, then yes, uninstall all unnecessary Lenovo software, update necessary drivers, let Windows 10 upgrade and Keep Data, Keep Applications. Should work. Make certain all Lenovo baggage is gone. I have a T4xx in the basement that I converted when Build 10240 was new. It...

I have one of these (i5, 16 GB, 500 GB hard drive) as my daily driver running Windows 10. It is about 3 years old. The keyboard is easily and inexpensively replaced. If the plastic shell is broken / cracked then that seriously reduces its value.

Should work fine, presuming your BIOS will understand 1TB.

I tried a 1 TB WD drive in my old X230 and could not get it to work but this is a 3 year old machine and your machine is newer.

Use the Media Creation Link from Microsoft https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Click on Upgrade to Windows and see first if it will do 64-bit and second if it will do driver updates. Which is to say there haven't been any obvious regressions since Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

No, it has to do with the machine working properly as it should and as I maintain it.

Sorry to say, but you must have done at least something wrong Nope: I used the Preload. The blame for the lack of reliability can be laid at Lenovo and Apple's feet. Look at the underlying mess iTunes is in. Apple does not want to support Windows - just MAC. Lenovo thinks "cool" is more important t...

I have a working T61p that is seeing backup service right now as I have an X230 with LED display. The smaller battery in the X230 lasts more than twice as long as the bigger battery in the T61p (LED vs. CFL and inverter, smaller screen, smaller motherboard, more efficient devices).
