Re: upgrading, sort of, X230 to windows 10 pro
I have an X230 right here. It is running Windows 10 Pro V2004 (advanced Windows Insider). Lenovo Vantage or System Update (I use this) keeps BIOS, Chipset and all drivers up to date. No issue. It is a type 2306 CTO (Made to order). All the Windows 10 functionality works fine and I have Office 365 on...

The CPU should run somewhat less than 60 degrees C. Check this with Real Temp. Over 50 degrees C will make the laptop warm on the bottom. How warm depends on the exact temperature of the CPU

Re: Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2
I have an X1 4th Generation (not Extreme) new in 2016 and it works fine. i7 and 16GB of memory like you. Intel Graphics (my experiment with dedicated graphics on a T61 left me cold so I avoid that). 1 TB SSD NVMe drive. Be careful what you wish to keep on the 256GB SSD as you might find that confini...

Re: X230 white spots on screen
How bad / how annoying? I see some pale blue spots (size of a thumbprint) on a blue background. I just ignore them. The machine is not new and is my Windows Insider machine. I use an X1 now as a daily machine. So if you can live with the imperfections, your money would be better invested in somethin...

You haven't said much about budget or what OS you want. There a T models that come with Windows 10 and 500 GB SSD drive that are reasonably priced, so I suggest one of these. Screens are normally 14 inch on these.

Re: Compatible DVD drives for Ultrabase Series 3
I have an X230 and Ultrabase in the basement here. You need the base with DVD to install an OS on that machine with a CD/DVD. The DVD drive is a UJ8C2 FRU P/N 45N7457.
The X230 is not that old. Mine is running an advanced Insider version of Windows 10. Nice machine

Go to Lenovo Support, enter your full model number or serial number and search for Windows 10 updates. Windows 10 is running so also run System Update and see what it finds.

Switch to Balanced Plan and restart.
Now open an admin command prompt and type powercfg /List to list the plans.
Use powercfg /delete to delete the Airplan plan.
I did this and it has worked for me over the long haul.

Re: Linux Mint 19 / Thinkpad Carbon 3rd Gen - battery test?
I just got the Lenovo replacement battery I ordered about 6 weeks ago for my X1 Carbon 4th generation Windows 10. Back to 6 or 7 hours of run time and very little reduction when suspended. Make sure your power management drivers for Linux are all up to date. Otherwise, the battery may not have been ...

Getting a good one such as you want for under 500 Euros will be a challenge. My own X1 delivers what you want and I got it with a 1 TB SSD NVMe drive but it was way over 500 Euros. Consider the used marker for one that is about a year old.

You should probably try a Lenovo battery, or at least a warranty-approved battery replacement.

Re: Window 7 Activation keeps reversing
Where did the Windows 7 license come from?
Purchased license from a supplier?
Cloned an OEM Windows 7 system from another source?
The activation issue can happen if the licensing is not legitimate.

Report in ZDNet this morning
"Windows 10 1903: Buggy update slows PCs, breaks Desktop Search, says Microsoft" and no workaround.
It does not seem to have affected me, but has affected lots of people.

Six row keyboards have been very common on all 16x9 small screen (14 inches or less) laptops. I find them adequate for most uses. Even my LogiTech keyboard for my ThinkCenter is six rows with numeric keypad including navigation keys. If you have such a laptop, use a dock and keyboard for more intens...

I have an i7 Thinkpad with 16 GB of memory and an i5 Thinkcenter with 16 GB of memory. Either CPU will do what you want. 8 GB is likely to do your load. I typically am using 4 GB out of 16 GB and the extra memory is for virtual machines. I would definitely get a 512 GB SSD drive. It is a pain to cha...
