You don't need a diskette to do a BIOS flash. All the thinkpads I've had have had the recovery partition removed immediately....and I've always been able to do the self-extracting flash That doesn't always work for some reason; sometimes you have to use a diskette, sometimes you don't. If you blew away the hidden partition, then the BIOS flash isn't going to be automatic. You will have to download it one a diskette and run it like that; as far as I know, that is normal if you don't have the Predesktop area intact.
