You could try drive image 2002.

I've had that happen to me before. Either retry making the image or try a different program.

I have a 60gb 4200rpm toshiba hard drive and when it's working you can just hear it grind. Sometimes it makes me think the head is going to snap off lol.

Oh I forgot to mention that my t40 had fallen off the top of a truck about 6 months back so I guess take that into consideration. And a no go on the palmrest thing.

Probably the backlight. If it's under warranty get the lcd changed.

My t40 just died last week. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the motherboard. Now i'm debating on if i should fix it or just buy a different laptop. I'm on vacation right now but i've got my trusty t23 at home for me to use in the time being.

The difficulty seems to differ from lcd to lcd. Some are just snapped together while others are glued. For the most part the toughest seem to be toshiba lcds and thinkpad screens aren't that bad.

That sounds like the backlight to me. You can just buy the backlight itself but it can be quite the task to replace on some lcds. I have used windex without any problems. There is probably something better like soap and water but the windex was there at the time.

Yeah, I've got a few older games that will not work or work well in xp. Most of them i can get to work but some the sound, or just other random things won't work for whatever reason.

You could try to measure the voltages coming out of the inverter in both. Just be careful if you do it can get dangerous. I guess the worst thing that i can think that might happen is that either hte inverter or backlight might blow up. lol.

I plugged the old lcd back in and i guess i didn't let the magic blue smoke out because the backlight still works on it.

Okay I went ahead and tried it. With the lcd plugged into the interter powered on it made a kind of static sound but worked. After unplugging from the inverter the noise is gone but so is the backlight for the lcd. What does that noise mean lol?
