New T520 overheated. Return?

My new T520 (i7, GMA graphics) overheated within the first 4 hours of using it. It reported FAN ERROR on the screen and shut down. Wouldn't reboot till it cooled down. But I can't reproduce the problem, even by running BurnInTest. Could this have been a weird transient problem or do these things ten...

Re: One Excellent T510

It's not all hardware differences. I find that Windows running on a Macbook looks sharper than OSX! I think this is mostly the differences in anti-aliasing. Windows aggressively snaps display elements to pixel boundaries, even if that changes the layout. Apple maintains strict fidelity to printer ou...

Re: One Excellent T510

The specs on the T510 screen look wrong. Can't increase height and PPI for the same number of pixels. I calculate: 15.6" diagonal 1600x900 = 7.65" height, 118PPI Display Specs: T410: 14.1" (358mm) WXGA+ (1440x900) color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 220 nits, 16:10 aspect ratio, 300:1 contrast ratio D...

Re: T410s 80GB SSD drive

I am considering installing a 160G Intel SSD. Supposedly to get all the benefits of Win 7 "enhanced experience" you need to be running a factory image, not a clean install from Win 7 disks. Does anyone know if reinstalling via the Rescue & Recovery disks give you an identical factory image?

The specs for the ATI chip are encouraging: http://ati.amd.com/products/mobilityrad ... pecs.html". Would not be surprised if a modified ATI driver is needed to enable it.

T400 Verizon WWAN poor reception

The Verizon WWAN card in my new T400 has very weak reception. It sees no signal at all in one place where my tethered cell phone works fine (also using Verizon EVDO). Is this possible? Or does it indicate I have a bad card, or perhaps the antenna is disconnected?

If you do the auto-signup thing you get a free 7 day trial.

Note that, on my T400, it did not work out of the box. I had to download the latest VZAccess Manager from vzam.net.

BIOS now only has choice between internal and VGA for boot. Setting it to VGA doesn't use DVI (though I note that the same setting on my T60 does). Yes, I fixed the undock setting. Only remaining problem is inability to boot off DVI. Called support and they said they are working on a BIOS fix. Mine ...

Further problems

More problems. Waking from sleep in the dock doesn't pick up the DVI monitor resolution. It needs to be manually adjusted every time. Ejecting from the dock no longer goes into sleep mode. The laptop is still running with the lid closed. You need to manually open the lid, wait while it sorts itself ...

T400 can't boot off DVI

A docked T400 will not boot off an attached DVI monitor. You have to open the lid. There is a BIOS setting to boot off a VGA monitor (which works for DVI booting on my T60), but does not help the T400. Looks like a limitation of the BIOS.

Yes, I see the latest Dell supports DisplayPort. Current docks don't, though. This may take a while to shake out.

Yes, good point. I remember when the T41 first came out it wouldn't do 1920x1200, but a modded ATI driver enabled the mode. But WQXGA requires dual-link DVI, and if those wires aren't connected then no driver will fix it.

Bummer. That's on a W500, right? Sort of pathetic on a "workstation class" machine. T61p could do it. I'll have to think about canceling my order. You should be able to check the max resolution in the dock just by unchecking that box in the display settings that says "show only supported modes". Doe...

Not that simple. You need dual-link DVI for WXQGA. They tell us explicitly we can only get single-link out of the DisplayPort. The question is on the dock pass-through. Even if they support dual-link passthrough, WXQGA @ 60hz is still higher bandwidth than the stated limit. We'll have to wait and se...

No 30" monitor support

According to the tabook specs, none of the new T/W models can support external DVI at more than 2048x1536, even via the DisplayPort-DVI adapter. I find this very disappointing, and particularly pathetic for the "workstation class" W500.

Must be a typo. 14.1" WXGA+ is 1440x900, 120 dpi. And 14.1" WXGA is 107 dpi.
lew2 wrote:I think that's a typo.

WXGA+ is 1440x900 not 1680x1050. Plus look at the WSXGA+ on the T500 - it also shows 129dpi. How can a 14.1 and 15" screen have the same resolution and same dpi?

Further data

The problem seems to be related to Vista trying to run two network locations on the same interface. Some Googling suggests that a possible fix is to remove Apple's Bonjour, which is stealth-installed by Itunes and Adobe CS3. Plausible explanation. Have removed it, will report if the error recurs. Networking broken after resume from standby

Regularly, maybe 2-3% of the time, when resuming from standby, networking doesn't work. Vista thinks it is connected, but nothing works. I have to reboot. This is on a T60p that had VISTA factory-installed, and it is completely patched. I can't believe they still haven't gotten Vista working after a...

which one?

There are two versions of this on the IBM web store, and one is on sale. There is a small difference in the product weight and dimensions. The part numbers are 40Y7630 and 41N8460.

Anyone know what the difference is? Thanks.
