Re: x201 fan replacement part number frustration

"...why no seperate [Lenovo] part number for the fan" -- Because there is a practical, albeit arguably arbitrary, lower limit to the granularity of Lenovo's part numbers, and the fan by itself falls below that threshold, just as a chip on a memory module falls below that threshold. The fans are man...

Re: x201 fan replacement part number frustration

Yes, it is possible to replace the fan only. However, if the full heatsink/fan assembly costs less than the fan only, then why not replace the entire assembly? The fan cannot be replaced without removing the heatsink assembly, so you might as well replace the full assembly.

For optimal heat dissipation efficiency, use paste -- unless only pad is permissible/possible. The "advantage" of pad is that there exist applications where paste is not possible or practical.

Re: What to replace in X200s to make it an X201s?

Three points in reference to your post above: 1) No need to change sound board if you will not change the base, since there will be no space for second speaker, so no point in a sound board which supports two internal speakers. The X200s sound board will work with the X201s motherboard. 2) Need to c...

Thanks. I just realized that the slimline-SATA connector does not provide 12vdc, only provides 5vdc ... so, no point in trying to power a desktop drive off that connector.

How much power do you suppose that internal slimline-SATA power connector can deliver?
Does anyone know:
1) If the slimline-SATA power spec is the same as the non-slimline-SATA power spec? And, if so,
2) Does that connector provide sufficient power for one standard 3.5" 7200RPM hard drive?

Does the part number distinguish the battery manufacturer at all? Or is it one part number regardless of manufacturer? In this case, the question is moot, i.e., of no practical consequence, in both the specific and the general. Here is why: Short, specific: The only 6-cell X201 batteries Lenovo is ...

The big difference is whether you get an original battery or a third-party battery. Note: Even if you get an original Lenovo bat...

The camera will work. The wireless cards will require that you replace the standard X201 BIOS with a modified BIOS which does not reject "unauthorized" wireless cards. That procedure is a simple BIOS update, and a modified BIOS for the X201 does exist -- let me know if you would like more informatio...

As you have discovered, once those fans get noisy, one cannot restore them to a quiet state.
