Re: Possible hard drive failure on ThinkPad 770 after installing Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management?

Can you connect the HDD to another machine to check it out for bad sectors and any SMART data clues. I used to use some DOS tools on a dos boot floppy in W98 days to check HDDs out. A couple come to mind: PC Doctor disk tool and HDRescue. There was an IBM disk fitness tool(DFT) as well. It might jus...

Re: T60 recommended SSD

I am a bit late to this discussion as you have already bought your SSD. But if you are using XP then the best buy is a Samsung because the supplied Magician software includes an optimisation routine that performs Trim for you on an XP setup. I have a couple of T6Xs that run XP and I run the program ...

Re: Uncorrectable Hardware Error Blue Screen

A T2600 would give you a bit of a speed boost so give that a try, but an SSD would speed it up much more.
You might need to load fresh Intel drivers to fix that BSOD with the T7400.

Good solid Thinkpads the T6x models.

USB2 twin adapters for the PC card slot of the 'inside' variety you seek used to be available so have a look on eBay. Also the express card twin slot USB3 adapters do work, I have several in use, I am sure that triple ones are available too.

Re: Thinkpad T20 Shuts Down

This model is prone to have loose inductors on the motherboard. This can give you all sorts of strange symptoms including freezing, blanking and fan pulsing. It might be worth your while to check this out. There are plenty of posts on this forum with photos too showing you what to look for and how t...

Re: Disk drive password

Which SSD model is it exactly? What exactly happens when you try to unset the password? Does it say that the password is wrong or gives some other error? Its a Samsung Evo 850 500gb. There is no error. The option in the Bios to change the User password is greyed out. I am wondering if this is speci...

Re: Disk drive password

Thanks for the github link. Maybe that will be of some use if the worst happens. But generally the bios will not even recognise a passworded disk without the correct password so I suppose there must be another way of getting to the disk. But no, this SSD will only allow its password to be unset on t...

Disk drive password

Anyone else noticed this ? I have a Samsung SSD that has a password set and it works fine for security in whichever T61 I fit it into. It is a drive that I swap between Thinkpads but there are two strange things with this. 1. It will not work in T60s because the correct password is not recognised. 2...

Re: SSD questions

For your XP machine I think Samsung Evo SSDs are the best bet because they come with the Magician software which allows you to run the optimization or TRIM routine to clean up the drive to keep it up to speed. They are amongst the best of the SSDs anyway. I run a Plextor mSata on an XP Tpad because ...

I have decided to try another T61 for a while to see what happens as far as the issues it has. This will at least tell me if it is indeed hardware related. So far it has been behaving itself with the same SSD fitted from the problem machine. Win 10 is not activated but it still works so is not a pro...

Re: Booting issue

I don't think the BIOS can get corrupted, but the CMOS battery that stores the BIOS' settings can become corrupt. When the BIOS does get corrupted, it is most likely a corrupt BIOS image that has been flashed. That is a very rare case though. I never came across this problem, but I am guessing that...

The image I mean is the XP flag with the loading bar. Not sure about Win 10 as it is used only in desperation and very in frequently. To keep it simple I am assuming therefore it is just XP . Whilst it could well be a driver issue I guess, as far as I can see all the correct drivers are loading incl...

Middleton's BIOS installs Lenovo's Slic2.1.
With that you need to also install any Lenovo W7-Pro Recovery set, not a 'straight' M$ one.
Which I don't have hence my request: where do I get this from? or where can I get just the certificate and bin files if they would work on their own that is.

Wow you have certainly spent some time on your 390X which was one of my favorite Tpads. I think I still have got a 850mhz cpu that I used to use in mine somewhere. It has a switchable speedstep mod that made it run only at 700mhz to try and keep it a bit cooler. It is surplus to my requirements now ...

Re: What OS do you use/recommend for T61

I have several T61s and all have XP installed with Windows 10 dual boot. XP works very well as far as I am concerned and the display drivers are the best of any OS for the T61 as W10 has no native drivers and looks a bit washed out and amateurish but so does the overdesigned look of W10 anyway. If this were mine I would do the following before deciding to replace the motherboard.
1. Try another power supply, any make or age would do just to use for diagnosis.
2. Fit another power connector

Both are usually available on eBay. In the meantime your replugging routine seems to work.

I am not convinced that this is totally a 32bit issue as my desktop will see 3.42gb of 4gb with the same PAE setup. On a system limited to 4GB addressable RAM, some address space has to be reserved for devices. How much exactly differs based on the devices available, so different systems can end up...

T61 available RAM - confused

I have a dual boot 32bit XP and Win10 T61, well several actually. When 4gb of ram is installed both OSs report only 3gb available, BIOS says 4gb installed. I would expect a bit more than 3 gb as a 1gb loss to OS and Thinkpad overheads seems a bit too much I would have thought. This is based on my de...

You could try booting from a Linux live CD or USB to prove the T60 hardware.
Also what happens if you skip installing updates? These have been known to kill a machine.

Vodafone models were exactly as you describe them, but the Verizon ones - which are a vast majority in that generation on this continent - had no SIM card to begin with since they were using a CDMA network.
