Re: x61s: Windows XP vs Windows Server 2003 vs 2008

You might want to take a look at WinXP-64. Shares the same code base Server 2003. I installed it on my x61s after I upgraded my RAM to 8G. Been rock solid.

x200s support 8G of RAM?

Hey, might have the opportunity to update a x61s to a x200s. One of the things I did with the 'older' thinkpad was updated RAM to 8G. I've found DDR3 4G sticks, but wondering if anyone in this forum had tried it yet.

There is a 64-bit version of Server 2003, as well as Linux too...

On a side note, looks like I cannot get VMWare ESXi to install. Ah well.

Yup. Boy does it make a difference. I did a pair of 4G sticks and Windows XP (x64) on one drive, 64-bit Centos on the other.

I posted what you need to do to get XP (x64) up and running. Not a Vista fan.

Re: VMware ESXi and/or Virtualizing an X61

I am a very heavy VMWare workstation user - I have images for each of my customer specific configurations, and will spool up a server that I code against. I also have a 'pre-baked' development environment that I can operate in. I'll run a very light Linux host OS and run the work environment inside ...

It should, but it will be a tad slower as it won't be dual channel. When I get back from holiday I'll try 4G+1G. Traded my 2G SO-DIMMs for the 4G'ers.

The Seagate Momentus 320G drive fits nicely. $89, free shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148336 7200RPM, 16MB Cache, SATA 3.0Gb, 4.17ms access time, 5 years limited warranty. I've got a pair of these that replaced the stock drive. They don't seem to run too hot either.

Yup - the apps worked in 32-bit XP/Server2003, but not Vista. 64-bit versions of XP/2003 also worked. Vista 64, same deal - no joy. Not happy about that. I'd name/shame the apps... but in some cases, I work for the company. (Doh)

Some of the apps I have will run on XP (x64) or the 64-bit version of Server 2003. No such joy with 64-bit Vista, and since Vista and 2008 share the same code base - did not try.

That is the application. Use your Retail WinXP disk to copy over the files, then replace it with the Lenovo OEM setupp.ini configurations. That will "down convert" the install to something that your OEM key will be valid with.

HOWTO: Installing Windows XP (x64) on an x61s Thinkpad

I picked up an x61s Thinkpad for work. One of the primary reasons I selected this laptop was it had the Intel GM965 "Santa Rosa" chipset. While the specification insists it supports a maximum of 4G RAM, it actually supports 8G total. After added the RAM (another blog note later) the next order of bu...

A pair of 4G SO-DIMMs showed up on my doorstep today. Installed without issues. With Win32, 3G of usable RAM. With Win64, all 8G show up.

Just wanted to say thank you to you early adopters out there!

Using a t60p power supply OK with a x61s?

They just updated my laptop - now a proud member of the x-series family. Quick question on power supplies.... So it looks like the power supply for my t60p is compatible (from a plug in perspective) with the x61s. X-series PS is rated 65W/20V/3.25A. T-series PS is rated 90W/20V/4.5A. Since I pack bo...

It can use 4G of RAM *IF* you have a 64-bit CPU and a 64-bit OS. If you got stuck with one of the early Intel chips, you are stuck just like me. Win32 has issues letting you access all of that last gig. If you use win64 (whatever variant) all four gig should show up.

I'm doing a lot of VMWare images, so RAM access - even slow RAM access is faster than hitting disk. I'm usually running an IDE on the host and hitting an Application Server running in the VM.

3G of RAM possible?

I've got a 2623-DDU and I'm looking to add more than 2G of RAM to it. I know I don't have a 64-bit processor, so no real point in adding 2x2G chips. Can I mix and match? Can I add a 2G and 1G chip for a total of 3G? Our IT guys told me no, not possible.... but I'm not sure I buy that. Anyone?

I did some benchmarks with a pair of HDD's - a 100g 7200 and a 100g 5400 drive. One with Win2003, the other with XP. Both clean OS installs with all drivers.

Compatibility vs AHCI (with drivers) showed no difference in performance when I benchmarked with HD Tach.

Benchmarks - 7200 vs 5400 SATA drive

Well, ran some quick benchmarks. In compatibility mode, the Hitach 7200 vs 5400 100G HDD using the large set. Wish I had the exact same settings on both, but that will have to wait till my next build. A mostly full 7200 RPM Hitachi running Win2003 server. Probably needs a defrag too... (hts721010g9s...
