Re: X60s Fan replacement options

Thanks for the reply. Well I decided to just re-grease the fan again to get me going until I decide what to do. I'll most probably just get another complete fan heatsink replacement again and hope it lasts longer than 14 months this time. Before I install it I may open the fan and grease the spindle...

X60s Fan replacement options

My wife and i both have a X60s that we use ~8-9 hours per day. I replaced the fan and heat sink assembly with an original Lenovo part 2 years ago (original fans lasted 4 years of heavy use). The new replacement fans only lasted 14 months before they started making a lot of noise. I stripped them bot...

Best place to purchase new battery for X60s in the UK?

My battery in my X60s has just died after 4.5 years. I guess I cannot complain but now need to find a replacement. I was shocked to see that they go for £130 - £160 on Lenovo's site. Can anyone recommend reputable suppliers in the UK for genuine OEM replacement batteries rather than 3rd party. I've ...

Re: Ultra base beeping

OK thanks. I'm sure I'll figure out how to strip it apart. Incidentally, the OS in use makes no difference as it beeps in XP and Linux. Not that I really thought it could be the OS but it's another possibility eliminated.

Re: Ultra base beeping

I'm sure it's not battery. I just swapped the ultrabase with the one from my office and the problem moved with the ultrabase. So it seems it's the ultrabase that may have developed a fault. I'll try cleaning all the contacts and open it up and see if there is anything loose. It's strange in how the ...

Re: Fan Error

Just to clarify, I changed the main cpu fan on mine (item 25 in that FRU document). I don't have a second fan. It's really not that difficult to swap the fan, but you do need to dismantle virtually everything from the motherboard to get to it. Get hold of a copy of the hardware maintenance manual wh...

Re: Fan Error

I bought mine directly from Lenovo's support. Was around €23 IIRC. You'll need to check the FRU number of the fan you require for your laptop. You can look up the part HERE.

Re: Fan Error

Yep, I had the fan error too. I cleaned the fan and it worked for about a week then the error came back. I replced the fan and all is well now. Fan is also much quieter now. You can do it yourself if you're a little handy with a screw driver ad are comfortable working with electronics

Re: X61s + battery

Spacemonkey, you should be getting better life from the battery if you tune the power management properly. I run openSUSE 11.2 and get the same life out of a charge than I did running XP. My original 4 cell prismatic battery is now on it's last legs and only gives 45mins of charge but it's 3.5 years...

Ultra base beeping

My X60s docked to a X6 ultrabase has started beeping randomly. It's the alarm beep you get when you try pulling the undock lever on the base before pressing the undock/eject button. I've checked the contacts on the base and laptop and have pressed the laptop down firmly when docking but does not hel...

Re: Anyone got Fn keys working in KDE on x60/s or x61/s?

Endev-managed definitely not the correct one. My keys were all over the place. I'm not convinced it's the keyboard driver other wise this would have showed up in Gnome too not just KDE. I'm going on vacation for 10 days so will spend some of my free time on the plane re-reading the wikis and working...

Re: Anyone got Fn keys working in KDE on x60/s or x61/s?

You might have the wrong keyboard selected to get a no symbol result. Interesting comment. I just looked and my keyboard is set as follows http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/sklipikish/openSUSE/th_snapshot20.png The other IBM choices are for the old Thinkpads like the 600 series. I assume tha...

Re: Anyone got Fn keys working in KDE on x60/s or x61/s?

OK, I've done a little playing with xev and have the following observations. My Fn key has keycode 227. I noticed that some of the keys say 'nosymbol' e.g. FnF2, FnF3, FnF4, FnF9, FnF12 KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x3e00001, root 0x7c, subw 0x3e00002, time 633080, (31,41), root...

Re: Anyone got Fn keys working in KDE on x60/s or x61/s?

Changing the mask didn't help, in fact it seemed to disable some of the special keys. I will need to carefully work through some of those wikis and see if I can get it working. It still puzzles me as why they worked in Gnome. I wouldn't expect the desktop enviroments to actually mess with the acpi d...

Re: Bluetooth dead after replacing fan

OK, I got it working. I just reseated the ribbon cable on the mainboard and it now works. Strange because I thought I had made sure everything was properly connected before closing up. The ribbon had to snap it with a good click and required a bit more force than I expected.

Re: Anyone got Fn keys working in KDE on x60/s or x61/s?

If it is there, try running /etc/rc.d/init.d/acpid restart in a terminal as root to reset acpi. Then try your hotkeys. Try running cat /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey in terminal. Thanks for the help so far. It's been useful in trying to make more sense of this. I'm running 2.6.27 and also came across the reference to the newer kernels not using thinkpad_acpi. I still have the thinkpad_acpi on my system as I just did a search for it and came up with many folders with that nam...

Re: Bluetooth dead after replacing fan

Well to replace the cpu fan you need to remove the lcd with lid (i.e. in one piece by removing the screws on the hinges and lifting it out). I disconnected the ribbon cable where it attaches to the motherboard not on the actual lcd panel itself. I just find it strange that it BT in not working now a...

Bluetooth dead after replacing fan

I just replaced my fan on my x60s. It's enabled in the bios but does no...

Maximum memory supported but x60s?

Can someone please confirm what the maximum memory the x60s (1704-56G) can support. I've seen references to 2GB and 4GB. Even IBM's site contradicts itself. HERE is says 2GB in the summary but when you click through on the memory link it says 4GB is max. Also on the Crucial Memory site they say 2GB ...

Re: Anyone got Fn keys working in KDE on x60/s or x61/s?

Thanks guys. I'll try as suggested. @bodiless, when I briefly tried Gnome in openSUSE almost all the Fn keys worked out of the box too which seems to agree with what you experienced with Ubuntu and the Gnome desktop. Since it works in Gnome I assume it's more of a KDE or QT problem. I'll see if the ...

Anyone got Fn keys working in KDE on x60/s or x61/s?

I'm using KDE4.3.1 with openSUSE on my x60s and am having trouble getting some of the special keys to work. The ones that don't work are Fn+F2, Fn+F3, Fn+F4, Fn+F7, Fn+F9, Fn+F12. In Systemsettings when trying to enter a key combination to set a shortcut the Fn key is not recognised at all. However ...
