Hard Drive recoverable?

Sorry if this is not the appropriate forum to ask but I have no idea what to try next I have a Win7 W500 with SSD boot drive and a 500Gb Hitachi drive (D:) in the UltraBay. I picked up a Win7 W530 with an SSD and added a 1Tb HD (D:) in the UltraBay. So I'm transferring the data from the W500 HD to t...

'New' W530 on the way

Well, refurb anyway. I've been needing to upgrade my W500 so I've been looking at W530's because they're the last model to incorporate an express card slot (needed for a better sound card) and retained the classic UltraBay design. I just won an BIN offer on eBay ($450) for a really clean W530 with a...

Re: Switchable graphics- how to startup with integrated?

It is supposed to retain the graphics settings from your last reboot. If I shutdown my T500 in Integrated, it starts up in Integrated and the other way around. That is exactly what I'm trying to do but somehow my bios reverts to 'switchable' on next bootup so I have to manually revert to integrated...

Re: w500 switchable graphics. How to disable altogether

I've uninstalled all ATI drivers, ATI Catalyst, disabled the card in Device Manager, etc. Nothing remains that I'm aware of to 'dis-associate'.

w500 switchable graphics. How to disable altogether

I have a W500 that the ATI graphics card is apparently failing. It works for a short while then the display starts to 'pixelate'. Sometimes I get the message 'The ATI driver stopped working and recovered' and it works for a short time then begins to 'pixelate' again. . Most often it just ends up loc...

Re: X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook - No Line-in or WYH Record -

If you can provide more info on the hardware and configuration being used, I might be able to provide a better response-- it definitely sounds like a driver thing. Creative does have some recording applications which might potentially have to be installed as well. I just upgraded my W500 to Win7 Pr...

W500 Win7 and Rescue and Recovery

I just upgraded to Win7 Pro and still have my R&R Q drive. I thought I would install R&R but noticed that the W500 is not supported under R&R (4.52). Just the W510, W520, W530, W540. It does say it "might also work properly on other computer models". Any issues I should be aware of if I were to inst...

Not sure if it's Samsung but my W500 has a WXUGA display. It's no Flexview ala my T60 but I like the resolution.

What is your favorite 15" display.... the one you consider ideal/best?

Re: W500 SSD Recommendations?

First of all, you're not doing that W500 justice by running a 32-bit OS on it. With 8GB RAM and an SSD that old machine will feel very young again. Amazing how spoiled we've become, eh? To think of W500 performance as being that an 'old machine' There's absolutely nothing stopping you from d...

Re: W500 SSD Recommendations?

I would still encourage you to test W7, but to each their own... It's not that I am completely unfamiliar with Win7. I have helped a few friends solve problems on their systems running Win7. I even in fact have a 'new' W500 with Win 7 COA. It's just that Win 7 seems to bury things I want to get to ...

Re: W500 SSD Recommendations?

So with XP not having native TRIM support means I would need to perform periodic 'garbage collection/cleanup' on my own using accompanying s/w? Kinda like what I do now with optimizing, defragging?

A lot of people on the German Thinkpad forum have replaced the T60 CCFL with this LED-backlight kit: http://www.iccfl.com/product_info.php?products_id=11860 Wrong one, it should be this: http://www.xccfl.com/product_info.php?products_id=4725 Uh oh... Re: W500 SSD Recommendations?

Yes, the COA is for XP. I have not seen a need to upgrade and my philosophy is if it ain't broke don't fix it :)

Again, I display my ignorance of SSD. Is native TRIM support essential?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to SSD. My apologies for my ignorance but I just want to double check I know what I'm getting into before I pull the trigger and potentially waste money I don't have to lose. Re: W500 SSD Recommendations?

It depends on the configuration of the machine. If it has only one bay (X200 for example) you'd have to replace the existing HDD with a matching-size-SSD that would fit everything that you need. On a T-series unit, you can have a smaller (64-128-256GB) SSD as a boot drive and store documents/pictur...

Re: How is the W500 quality?

Another point to consider re W500 vs later models (510, 520, etc.) is the W500 is the last of the generation that includes a PCMCIA port. While it's now discontinued (I have multiple backups) I really enjoy having a Creative Audigy 2 ZS Notebook sound card in lieu of the on board sound of stock lapt...

Re: W500 SSD Recommendations?

Excuse my ignorance. I am really intrigued by the performance increase of an SSD. Even more so now that pricing seems to be dropping. My question is, does the SSD completely replace the (mechanical) hard drive or can it be installed 'in addition to'? e.g. use the SSD for the O/S and any commonly use...

Re: T60 Flexview display blanking out

You do understand that there's only one CCFL in there? When it gets weak, the screen starts losing brightness in all corners going gradually towards the middle. I do know there is only one CCFL tube (at the bottom). I just wasn't aware the symptoms were as you describe. Would have thought it would ...

Re: T60 Flexview display blanking out

I considered that but thought if that were the case it would be an overall dimming or maybe the corners along the bottom (not at the top as well). I'm just not knowledgeable about how edge lighting actually works, spreads the lighting equally and consistently across the entire display bottom to top....

T60 Flexview display blanking out

I have a T60 with UXGA Flexview (ATI graphics) that I use as a backup. I was too long in keeping it charged and let the battery discharge. T60 won't boot, H/W & HD seem fine

I have a 'backup' T60 (WinXP) that suddenly won't boot. I've known the battery was pretty much dead so I've been running it every couple weeks or so to recharge. Last time I booted it successfully was about a week ago and it booted fine. Yesterday I tried powering it up and POST told me I needed to ...

Keyboard/Input problem(s) on W500

Not long ago my 'end' key stopped working. It was pretty sudden because it use it a lot to dim the screen. About the same time my left arrow key became intermittent. Then, the right button on my (wireless) mouse stopped working and also seemed to generate 'random' left button signals (i.e. it would ...

Any idea why just one key might suddenly quit working? I was thinking it might be 'mechanical' since the key works fine in the virtual keyboard.

I would think if it were a 'row/column' scan problem then other keys would be affected as well.
