Re: ...
Currently I am in University and can not afford to be without my laptop. However, this summer I plan on calling IBM to report and hopefully have some issues with my laptop serviced (battery drains too quickly for less than 1 year in use; hard drive noise; DVD-RAM loud spinning noise). Hopefully the...

Thanks. Currently I am in U...

Re: Noisy T42
Since yesterday, I have noticed my T42 to be quite noisy. I have not done anything different to it recently nor changed any components (all IBM software is the most up-to-date). I have noticed the fan has been running all the time and and a spinning/fan-like noise from the bottom right corner (unde...

Yes, that is the hard drive in the bottom right corner. Try running a DFT on the drive (Drive fitness test). It is possible that your drive may be dying, as normally these drives are pretty quiet, especially the 5400rpm mdels. The laptop is less than one year old so I would hope that it would not b...

Bottom right hand bay houses the hard disk. If you post the model # of your ThinkPad, you could probably get feedback from people whose ThinkPads use the same type of HDD. I have a 2373-3VU and a 80gb 5400 RPM hard drive. Does anybody know of any software that you can monitor hard drive activity an...

To force a restart you've got to hold the power button down for like 7-10 seconds. That should definitely be not OS dependent. Try holding it longer, I'm 100% sure battery removal is not needed for a restart. Thank you for your advice. I know that one can press down the power button to force a shut...

FN + F3 --> unable to wake my computer
Last night I didn't want to suspend or hibernate my computer so I pressed FN + F3 to black out the screen of my computer. This morning the computer would not display any image when I moved the mouse, pressed on the keyboard, or even when I pressed the power button (the moon light, indicating standy ...

Taskbar help
Whenever my laptop is running on battery, the arrow to expand my taskbar (to show the hidden icons) is extremely slow in expanding. However, when I plug my laptop into the AC, it returns to its normal speed. The only time that the arrow is at its normal speed while still on battery is if another pro...

I am looking to get a thin sleeve/slipcase for my new T42. I am looking at both the BOOQ Powersleeve 14 and the Spire Boot (vertical) [ http://www.spireusa.com/products/BT4.html ]. Anybody have either of these and any recommendations on either? I want to get one so that I can put it into my existing...

Just beware with the Kensington locks, at least the standard ones with a circular type key. It is possible to open them rather easily! I read about this recently, the article did not give the exact method used only the implement used, a Bic pen. It took me about 10 mins to figure it out and...

both are good.... if your into hacking, Linksys is better.... bad reviews for routers are often due to people not knowing what they are doing.... Sorry to bombard you with questions: Do you recommend any specific models? Which one do you own? What do you mean by Linksys is better for hacking? Thanks!

Although I've had no problems with Netgear yet, I've read a couple reviews that say that there is an issue between Netgear and Thinkpads w/ intergrated wireless... something like "Code 10" error (try using Google and search for "Code 10 Thinkpad Netgear"). And although LinkSys gets worse reviews th...

I am also looking to purchase a wireless router for my home ASAP. benz, Very nice picture. I was interested in two pieces of software which were showing in your system tray: the one to the right of Outlook (looks like a signal indicator) and the one to the left of the IBM Active Harddrive Protector (looks like a gold shield). What are they? This is my first laptop...

To get a graph of CPU speed in SpeedswitchXP, you have to enable it in the options. Once you do that, you really should be able to see it controlling the CPU speed (it's very possible Windows is lying to you about it). I don't know why but I think Windows is lying about it. SpeedswitchXP is working...
