Re: Memory Upgrade for T61

I tried two of the Komputerbay 2GB DDR2 800MHz PC2-6300 PC2-6400 DDR2 800 cards and had all sorts of issues with them. After failing multiple memory tests and getting replacements finally just gave up on them and got theCrucial 4GB Kit (2GBx2) DDR2 800MHz (PC2-6400) CL6 SODIMM 200-Pin from Amazon fo...

Re: Buying a ThinkPad without OS

I was in the market for a Thinkpad today. I just found out in this old thread that I can't buy one without paying for a worthless windows license.

So I'll be shopping elsewhere. Voting with my wallet. Maybe someday Lenovo will come around when enough customers like me buy something else.

Re: No sound through speakers

The more I read about this issue the more I am convinced that it is the Southbridge. I thought when I first got this laptop that it had the GPU issue but the first time I started it at the guy's house I pressed on the keyboard bezel and it started and ran with no issues (in Linux as this was an OS-l...

Re: No sound through speakers

I've never had the southbridge chip issue with a Thinkpad so I really don't know much about it. Does it require reballing like a GPU or is it another process? The only weird GPU issue is the strange letter-boxing reduced area when in some game modes (3D graphics maybe?) like Diablo-2. I've run D2 on...

Re: can't charge or turn on T42, what is the problem?

Sounds like you have a bad component somewhere. If you have known good parts you can try taking it apart and swapping things. I'd start with the Mobo bare with only the CPU installed and a known good keyboard and a known good monitor. If it still doesn't post then I'd swap out the CPU. Yes, I had th...

No sound through speakers

Sound works just fine with earphones though. I've checked the audio-out connector and it doesn't seem to be getting stuck so it thinks that the earphone connector is still in there. I've also tried plugging in a known good speaker assy. and it still doesn't work. The connector on the board seems fin...

Re: A31 issue: Won't see hard drive

Other than that, just be sure to have four screws in the drive caddy to guide it into the connector, and you should be good. That might be the root of the issue. The caddy was removed along with the drive and the cover when whomever "retired" this machine from government service. Many of the older ...

Re: A31 issue: Won't see hard drive

I had something (I think it was a T30) that no matter what I did only the bottom set of HDD pins would engage, into the upper set of holes. I ended up installing the HDD prior to putting the Palmrest on, so I could see the alignment. Cheap and worth a try! Ron This might be my problem. I'll have to...

A31 issue: Won't see hard drive

I've got an old A31 that I was trying to get back on the road. ThinkPad A31 2652-J3U It seems to be fine and PC doc says it is good too but will not see any HD I try putting in there when I try installing winderz. This is frustrating to me as I've rebuilt dozens of T4x's and R5x's but this issue has...

Re: BEWARE of Superior Reball and Rework for GPU reballing / fix

I've never had an actual issue with any of the dozen re-ball jobs done by Superior. Not anything that wasn't my own fault or lack of repair skills. My first (and only) 2 attempts at doing a reflow myself were total failures. So I gave up on destroying boards and sent them both to Dale at Superior. O...

Re: M50 Thinkcentre Memory issue -help!

I just picked up an 8415-LUA M50 Thinkpad for my dad. Found some really cheap memory to get it up to 2G and a 320gb SATA drive. Total cost $200. Windows XP-pro license still affixed to the case. This should last him for a while! He was still using an older P4 system with win2k on it and was having s...

Re:

No XP reinstall necessary. The IDE controlers are the same, so it boots without an issue. A couple of drivers are automatically recognized and installed. The only thing missing is the video driver, it defaults to a Windows driver, so you have to install the Intel driver from Lenovo.com. Or just run...

I was disgusted with this machine and gave up on it Saturday. I was even shopping around for a new board on ebay. But last night I had an epiphany. Re: M50 Thinkcentre Memory issue -help!

Thanks. I think that the problem is either the mainboard or the power supply now. I gave up on the new memory and put the old ones back in and even THEY wouldn't work together. It would only work with ONE at a time. The more I messed with it the worse it got and eventually got to the point where eve...

Re: M50 Thinkcentre Memory issue -help!

One more thing: It seems that after putting it back the way it was it STILL won't startup past the splash screen unless there is ONLY ONE memory card in it. This is VERY strange. Maybe something happened to one of the slots when I was removing/switching memory? -and this is causing some weird proble...

Re: M50 Thinkcentre Memory issue -help!

The memory seems to work just fine in my Asus-boarded P4 that also takes PC2700 DDR. I guess there is an issue with the IBM bios not liking it. I checked and it is the latest bios version. Is there something in the BIOS setup menu that I could change here that would let the board recognize this memo...

M50 Thinkcentre Memory issue -help!

I've got an M50 Thinkcentre (8414-KUA) that I wanted to upgrade the memory on. I had the 512M stick in that came with the computer and another generic 512M stick that I had laying around from another old computer. Since I had 4 Dimm slots I figured I'd buy what I could afford and I found 2 1G sticks...

Re: T4x GPU Problem - Alternate Fix - R51 Mobo w/Intel GPU!

My experience is limited to working on older TP's in the T-series and the older 770,770x, and 770z-series machines. I'm mostly self-taught through trial-and-error and what I have read and learned here. I had assumed, through reading this thread, that all the R5x series used the Intel GPU but I was w...

Re: T4x GPU Problem - Alternate Fix - R51 Mobo w/Intel GPU!

A 15" SXGA+ 1400x1050 LCD is not a wide screen. It's a 4:3 aspect ratio LCD. "Larger screened" then. I misspoke when I typed "Wide Screen." Did Thinkpad even make an R5x or T4x with anything but the 4:3? Anyhoo, it sure is "wider" than all my 14.1 XGA1024x768 T4x's... Next time I'll just say "big s...

Re: T4x GPU Problem - Alternate Fix - R51 Mobo w/Intel GPU!

I picked up a "dead" wide-screen R51 at a gov't surplus place for $20 without any opportunity to do much more than ID it from the outside. I didn't have any idea what was wrong with it at the time but figured/hoped the MB would be OK and the issues were something else. I was surprised to find that t...

It's too bad you don't have Harbor Freight there. It's a wonderful place. Cheap crap has its place sometimes. I could spend hours and hours just wandering around a HF store plucking up bargain tools. Re: Lenovo Kills Off ThinkVantage System Update

@VFR_firefly we'll lose more than TVSU ... we'll lose Thinkpads. I think that part is pretty much written in the cards. There was a lot of worry that once Lenovo took over all the support from IBM that they would start to suffer. I think that up until a few months ago IBM was still doing a lo...

Re: Lenovo Kills Off ThinkVantage System Update

The same issues apply to the updates themselves. In theory Lenovo has to test every update to every TV application on every ThinkPad model that it's supposed to work. Yes, it's tedious, but they're in a far better position to do it than to rely on their customers to do it for them. Of course they a...

Re: Lenovo Kills Off ThinkVantage System Update

I think the reason isn't because Lenovo got sued, I think it is because it is just too expensive to keep it going. The server and the TVSU program aren't expensive to keep up. The issue is continuing to get the coding correct on the updates themselves so that they work automatically. Not only do the...

Re: Lenovo Kills Off ThinkVantage System Update

I see this as an ominous sign. The reason behind it is probably money. It takes money to pay the people to keep the updates going. I might be wrong and SU will be replaced with this new "communications center" and all will be well with the world. Lenovo is the Lexus of computing. They have all this ...

I find pill bottles are the easiest way to keep parts separated. If you print out the manual pages you need you can put them into a binder or staple them together into a book. I see now that I missed that. He might have a bit of trouble finding one in his price range. Might as well bite the bullet and pull the LCD apart. It's a pain, but it can be done.
