Heh, UPS shipping is pretty funny. ThinkPad shipped from lenovo the day after I ordered it (labor day), fast! It started in Alaska, traveled to North Korea, and is now in Hong Kong. The time even looks funny on the UPS site because it crossed the world time line! At least I did'nt have to pay for th...

That's my same machine I ordered, after debating highly. The total in Texas came to $1407 I think (with tax, but free shipping, so just pertend you're paying shipping and you'll fell better). I'll try to post a review when I get it, probably a linux-on-laptops tutorial too.

One inch should not make the much difference. If you are at all able to go to 14.1" there is a sale on 512 ram, radeon X1300, 1.83 core duo, 1400x1050, and 80 g hard drive. That's what I ordered, an extra gig of ram is probably what I will do. But personally, I never play games on a laptop, so I thi...

I would expect so, just because the Meroms will cost lenovo more money (because they are the "hot new thing"). But I don't think you will see that much of a performance difference, at least it won't be easily noticably in day to day use (maybe save a little time compiling the linux kernel, or someth...

Okay, I'm not too worried about it. The only thing I was remotely worried about was college reccomendations, and I will easily have $100 to get a gigabyte stick of ram by then. Thanks all, I'll post more when I get the order.

Okay, I went ahead and bought it. The total came to $1406, and I don't have enough money to upgrade the memory at this time. I will in a month or two, but will 512 mb ram make the system really slow? Or will adding more memory just make it more noticably fast? Thanks all.

I don't know if it would be of much help, but the memory compatibility lists are on their site:

Okay, thanks jagged. I'm just worried about every clip breaking and having a very techno looking laptop instead of a uniform color :)

Still, some of the benchmarks I saw only had a 2-11% difference when using a core 2 duo. Now sure, 11% is very considerable, but not enough for me to spend another $300. Any word on when the Meroms will drop in price?

Well, that may be going a little far. But certainly some design should be at least studied. If people really started looking at a change as radical as you talked about, people would probably start doing things like changing the instruction set architecture. But that probably is not practical. And II...

I don't think it's software that is fueling the issue. And if it is, the only real thing that 64-bit is being held back by is the small portion of assembly code in programs, and maybe some compiler work. All the visual basic programmers won't really be noticing much of a change. And even at lower la...

Okay, just one more question. I read the memory requires taking off the keyboard rest, and that it was prone to error. I certainly don't want to break the tabs, is this likely to happen? I'm not too risky, is the half cheaper memory worth the risk of breaking your keyrest?

Yeah, I kind of assumed that one. They don't exactly look like the alienware green plastic. I'm looking for a solid programming machine, but want to be able to be able to at least use it without having to wait to see my text that I type.

Thanks, all

Just one other question, will the graphics be horrible? I'm buying this for college, so it should last at least 3 years, and I don't plan to do any gaming (I have a desktop machine for that).

If you go to their labor day sale page, in the bottom right hand corner you can see the link for the pre-configured ThinkPads. Its a $300 save. Where should I buy the 1 GB of ram from, and what price can I get it for? Will ram addition void a warranty?

Sale for Preconfigured T60

There is currently a sale on pre-configured T60 ThinkPads. I found this from looking at the Labor Day sale, and seeing a very small link in their "other deals" section. I had to do a bit of work to find it again. Specifically I was looking at a markdown from $1599 to $1299. At $1299 (with tax) it h...
