Re: Options for Refurbished W520

I happened to read this as I was heading to the Post Office to pick up 2 8gb modules for my W520. I wasn't 100% sure of this because the W520 is quite different on the inside compared to the W510 but the memory layout is the same. Good to know. What is your before & after memory size, and is it mak...

W520 with quad CPU have 4 RAM-slots. Here's advice to fill the slots in a W510, I presume the same applies to a W520: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Optimizing-memory-in-W510-which-slots-to-use/ta-p/249257 Super find, thank you. Re: Options for Refurbished W520

As for RAM, 4x4 GB used DIMMs used to cost around half the price of 2x8 GB new DIMMs, but the 8 GB DIMM price has fallen in the last few months. I know the Intel graphics like 2x DIMMs for better performance, I don't know (suspect not) that there is any performance gain from having 4 DIMMs versus 2...

How do you check that usage? Are you looking at the SSD software interface to see how much of the SSD is allocated for over provisioning? (I'm unsure whether that shows any actual usage)

The series 4 actually look like a decent business class laptop. Huh...the thread is five years old and Samsung has pretty much killed its laptop range - at least for the U.S. market - in the meantime... Yep, so why would anyone place any value on a 10-year warranty on Samsung Pro SSD's? In one of t...

I think the main purpose of the discreet GPU option on the T520 was to drive additional external monitors. The T-series is not intended for gaming, CAD or video work, even with its discreet GPU which is quite weak. In my experience, the integrated intel graphics on the T520 is fine for office work, ...

Re: ThinkPad T510 upgrade -- next steps after SSD and RAM?

You sound like a candidate for a W520. It is from year 2011 but it ages well with its quad core i7, up to 32GB ram, USB3 ports, 2GB vram, and ability to hold 3 drives (sata, msata, hot-swappable ultrabay sata), etc. The T520 can also hold those same 3 drives. The W520 sports significantly superior G...

Assuming that tablets don't count as a "computer".....

Bought nothing for almost two years except last quarter I acquired a T530 and W530. Hate them both for reasons any enthusiast knows, so I'll stick with the 520 indefinitely, despite its ridiculously short screen

Re: Should I look for a W520 or buy something newer?

Well, a month later, I'm reporting back. I found a W520 at a good price and decided to try it. It doesn't have the FHD screen as several people recommended. (It has the 1600x900 one.) I needed to get something sooner rather than later and decided to spend less. I had a W520 with the 1600x900 screen...

You don't need recovery media. Any retail disk for the proper version of the OS that you're installing - and which the COA is for - will work just fine. Worst case scenario, you might have to call Microsoft in order to activate the installation. I don't have any Win7 retail disks, sigh. Correction,...

Re: Should I look for a W520 or buy something newer?

Based on my experiences, IMO the only good screen on the T520 and W520 is the FHD (1920x1080). You need the OEM tho made by not the knockoffs. The HD+ (1600 x 900) is low quality and its colour pallette is always bad, with incorrect colour reproduction no matter what colour profile you use. The HD+ ...

For all those who hate the "wobbly/knobbly" surface of the touchpad/trackpad on the T4x0/T5x0/W5x0 and others: I found a supplier in Malaysia who makes these stickers with smooth surface (and any color/design you like). both cloning and having a recovery partition carry a performance penalty in my not-so-limited experience with solid state drives. Fresh install, all the way. In my experience, standard 9.5mm caddy and rails work just fine with a 7mm SSD. That's the setup I've had in dozens of ThinkPads so far. Just re-use what your current HDD sits in and you're good to go. I honestly wouldn't go for any of the SSDs that you've mentioned. My recommendations would be San...

Sounds great, I think... If I understand correctly, for your older thinkpads you simply screwed your 7mm SSD into your old caddy from your old 9.5mm HDD??
