Re: ThinkVantage Toolbox: remove status icon and keep it gone
I have it disabled myself. I think a right click on a blank area of the taskbar brought up a menu. I then chose toolbars, and unchecked the toolbox toolbar. Yes, I already tried that. It makes it go away temporarily, but only until the next reboot. I found the following thread about this issue on t...

ThinkVantage Toolbox: remove status icon and keep it gone
The system toolbox keeps cluttering up my taskbar with its huge useless icon. I don't want to uninstall it completely, just remove the icon. I can right-click the taskbar and unselect the toolbar, or I can go to the settings dialog from within the toolbox and uncheck "Show Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbo...

Re: X220: 8Gb RAM Windows 7 Memory Diagnostic problems
I can't speak to the Win 7 memory diagnostic, but memtest86+ has worked quite well for me in the past in identifying bad memory modules. If it doesn't find anything, I would feel pretty confident that there wasn't a problem with the RAM. How many passes did you run? I ran 3 passes of memtest86+ so ...

X220: 8Gb RAM Windows 7 Memory Diagnostic problems
Hello everyone. Long time, no see: I was last on these forums about 5 years ago with my X60s, but that's finally ready to retire and now I have a new X220 4286-CTO. Lovely IPS screen and glad to see the red stripes back on the buttons again.... I have 8GB of RAM in my machine (4GB per slot). I teste...

I was able to upgrade my X60 HDD firmware without any optical drive at all, by using a USB memory stick. I had to unpack the Lenovo ISO and make some changes to it (it basically sets up a RAMdrive, loads up a DOS-mode CDROM driver (MSCDEX) and copies the files to the RAMdrive before executing them. ...

In the case of Apple, not only do they not give you the instructions you need, but the procedure for simple upgrades and repairs is anything but simple. For example, I will compare the procedure for upgrading/replacing the harddrive in the 12" powerbook G4 aluminium with the same procedure in a thi...

in fact, X60s is cooler I owned an X60s and it was the hottest laptop I had ever used. It's hard to imagine that the X60 can be even hotter! There must be some extreme variation in the warmth of X60s's in that case, because my X60s is far cooler than other laptops I have used (Inspiron 4100, Powerb...

You can open up an ISO on windows using many programs, eg, UltraISO, WinImage, 7-Zip. All of those are either free or have free trial versions. Bootable CD's are made bootable by the extremely high-tech route of having the image of a bootable 1.44Mb floppy on them. You can extract that image with an...

If you do all of these, you'll save a bunch of weight, at the cost of a small amount of inconvenience. Remove the battery and just have a spare AC adapter available at each location you use the laptop. They're only $30 or so. Remove the fingerprint reader (after disabling it in BIOS) Remove the keyb...

I think the statement that confused me was this one: This would only work for ExpressCard/34 cards who use the only the USB 2.0 connection of ExpressCard, and not the PCI express x1 lane. So from your second post, I do now understand that both /34 and /54 had both USB and PCIe connections, and the ...

Does the wireless turn itself off if it cannot detect a network in the area? I upgraded to the Atheros card for improved performance and to hopefully get rid of the annoying auto-shutdown of the old card. The Atheros card has worked flawlessly, however now I notice it shuts itself off but there are...
