Re: T440p CPU upgrade + dGPU question

Welcome to the Forum.

Get a T440p with iGPU but with a dGPU fan.
The nVidia dGPU is not much better and running unnecessary hot.
Get a 37W CPU i7-4702MQ or i7-4712MQ, little to no difference between them.
And use a PTM7950 thermal pad.
Replace the DVD-drive with an Ultrabay SSD-adapter.

Re: IBM ThinkPad R40 (2722-BDG) 06/2004 - Project

I just reread this post from the start. In all these years you have never mentioned what exact LCD you have in your machine. And you keep going on about graphics-drivers without even knowing this! Use e.g. HWINFO to get the hardware ID for the LCD, then enter the ID here: https://www.panelook.com/ f...

What happens if you use Fn-Home (brighter) or Fn-End (dimmer)?

Re: Classic mice/mouse recommendations?

Quite modern, but the Logitech M330 Silent Plus is a simple design, just the 2 buttons on top and a (click)wheel.
My family has been using these mice for years.

There are no T61 15" palm rest and keyboard bezel, T61 is 14" or 15.4".

Re: T480 screen shuts off after a few seconds to a minute after starting to use it.

Just make sure you get a proper T480 mobo and not T480s.
For a parts-list go to https://libthinkpad.github.io/fru/ and find the T480 FRU index.
Look for SYSTEM BOARDS with i5-8350U and UMA (= iGPU), the ones with SWG have dGPU, which you don't want.

Re: T480 screen shuts off after a few seconds to a minute after starting to use it.

That dGPU is not much better than the iGPU, is only needed for certain programs, causes more heat and costs unnecessary battery power.
Also, in my 20-odd years of laptop-use I have never needed a discrete GPU.

Re: T480 screen shuts off after a few seconds to a minute after starting to use it.

Yes, iGPU is integrated in the CPU (which is soldered onto the motherboard).
Also, stay away from T480 with nVidia dGPU.

Re: T480 screen shuts off after a few seconds to a minute after starting to use it.

Assuming fan/paste are OK, one last try: remove external battery and try with the power supply in the 2nd USB-C port and ext-monitor in 1st USB-C port. Also try HDMI this way. Ditto with power in 1st USB-C. Should the internal GPU be the 'sinner', look for a T480 mobo with iGPU and i5-8350U. i7 runs...

OK, so your mobo already had an S/N when you got it, unusual, but hey...

As for the KB, replace it, or try if a KB from another X1C works.

Get the X220 HMM from the HMM-Manuals link above.
And yes, it's a straight swap.

In Post 1 someone mentioned 5C11C12648 , which is a WQHD cable compatible with T14 Gen 3 models 21AH, 21AJ, 21CF and 21CG. Available at Lenovo, enter it here as Part Number : https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/parts-lookup No idea if that cable works with your new WQXGA. Also have a look at this: http...

You wrote: "I had a new spare mobo", but maybe that was a used mobo?
Because brand new ones do NOT have their MTM and S/N on it.
Go here and enter the new S/N without a dash.
What info do you get?
As for the keyboard, either a spill on the KB, dirt in the KB-cable socket or a KB gone bad.

Re: X1 Carbon 4th Gen -- Wonky Keyboard

If you want to run Lenovo updates, they won't work without that info.
It is the Lenovo MTM and S/N which is important, not the mobo S/N.

Download the HMD: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/i7tm38us.exe and install it temporarily on the laptop. Plug in an empty small USB-stick (32-64MB is enough). In the downloaded files is a program usbfmtpw.exe, run that to make a "Maintenance key". Cold-boot the X1 from that t...

Get the T480 HMM from the HMM-Manuals link above. Remove power, external battery and base-cover. Go to Chapter 9, 1120 Built-in battery, unplug the cable only (1). Go to Chapter 9, 1210 LCD unit and unplug both LCD-cables (3-4) and (5-6). Loosely put the base-cover back on, no screwing! Pu...

Re: T440p Flash and Crash

The LCD cable could be worn and possibly short against some chassis part, causing the crash.
Alternatively, maybe you are "static" from wearing nylon/acrylic/polyester clothing?
Or the charger cable/plug might be worn?

Have you tried USB-C 3.2 ?
Just in case, those docks need 90W instead of the standard 65W power supply.
