Check if you are manually setting ip.

1. if ip on one pc is 192.168.2.x the other should be in the same format, ie only x should change.

sometimes if you are building one with a new bare drive, they are not formatted. use a partitioning software like paragon or ranish or partitionmagic to do the job and u should be good to go.

u can put your computer on hibernate instead of stand by. i would prefer that.
