Re: looking to purchase an x61/s, just a few questions
Hi I was wondering if someone could link a desktop picture of their x61 (perhaps with a small internet browser open). Since it's a XGA, I have heard complaints about the resolution being too big for work? I understand that x61s is brighter, but since I will mostly use x61 indoor setting do I need x...

Just to let you know, the speaker on the X40 is pretty bad. If you want to hear quality sound you should get external speakers. Also, it's mono. Go get some proper headphones. The hard drive is not upgradeable. 60GB hard drives may be purchased on eBay. However, because the ThinkPad X40 uses a 1.8"...

Laptop motherboard repair - who to go to?
Several online companies say that they will repair my X40 motherboard. Are any of them any good?

How much is my X61 worth?
I have a Thinkpad X61, and I hate it. Linux compatibility is awful, and battery life is even worse. The good news is, though, that it's a pretty nice model. I paid $1750 plus tax a few months ago, and would like to get as much of what I paid as possible back. Anyway, here's the specs: 3-year (now 2 ...

I just found a mobo online - I thought it was going to be difficult to swap in, so I had a local guy do it - after he jacked it up, I tried my hat and it was pretty simple. Save yourself the time and heartache - just get a new mobo and call it a day. I got a squaretrade warranty on it as well - all...

After a bit of monkeying around with the funnel, I'm pretty sure the noise is coming from one of the three small inductors in the picture below, labelled, respectively, "Delta SPT134-0R8," "3R3 M48," and "100 M47": [img=http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1230/img2380ha4.th.jpg] The "100 M47" appears...

Personally, if I knew the noise was coming from an inductor and it was really bugging me, I'd simply buy a new one and replace it. I have not ever seen the outside (much less the inside) of an X40 but you might be able to find a match from what I posted in another thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com...

Fixing my X40 - new motherboard, or repair the old one?
After miraculously bringing back my X40 from the dead, it's still acting a bit squirrelly. While it does technically work, it still makes an annoying high-pitched whine while the battery is charging; after I removed the motherboard (again), I found it seems to be coming from one of the inductors. So...

yeah just thought the heat (if any) can contribute to the usb problems that i've been reading but i think its more prevalent when theres a power surge or connecting usb powered devices. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=43767&highlight=usb+x40 http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=381...

How low can you go?
I've heard that if you turn down the screen brightness, load the full OS into RAM, disable the hard drive, and keep the CPU stepped down to 600mhz, the 1ghz ULV X40 will pull as little as eight watts.
What's the best you've done? Any tips? Any comments in reference to SSDs for improving battery life?

All power used by a CPU is turned into heat. Less power = less heat.x432 wrote:
just have a query with the USB problems and overheating problems that the X series tend to get, and was wondering do the slower x40s (the 1.0ghz ULV and 1.2ghz machines) do they also experience these same issues as well.
thanks

Hmm...
The X21 seems to be severely limited by RAM. Low RAM = much HDD swappage = poor battery life.
How about this one?

The HDD caddy should be cheap enough,.

Re: Thanks for the reply
Hi Ray, Thanks for the kind reply and information. Apparently, the X22 can work with a monitor connected. The screen had lines across the screen but went completey dead after the owner took it to a repairman to have diagnosed. The whole shot would be about $200 and a bit for the unit with a new scr...

Someone mentioned that tap water's impurities may cause problems to a computer long after the water itself has dried. Considering that I live in an area with water so hard it's rated on the Mohs scale, I tried the following procedure, reccomended to me by an electronics guru: 1. Remove motherboard. ...

Have you tried to fix the DC power jack? May be as simple as that. I believe the jack on the X40 is soldered onto the board and is a relatively easy repair with a soldering iron, but you'd have to completely remove the system board to do it. Another alternative is a service like this - Laptop Guy T...
