That would be I!
But you don't understand: the socket was - amazingly - not soldered on. It was contact-only via a blob of adhesive to hold it in place. Not impressed with Lenovo on this one.

Re: X1C5: Fan Connector Socket Came Off Motherboard
I'd like to post the final "resolution" to this if anyone wants to be amused. I found the connector, and by VERY carefully positioning the jack/socket combination over the tiny motherboard solder pads, I was able to get the X1C5 to boot exactly one time. But I couldn't replicate the apparent success...

Picture: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1smZt-qNGE8PTa2S_jgEf326cKMtE5S8R/view Houston, we have a problem! First of all, when I took this picture, it showed something totally unexpected and not visible to the naked eye: the "blob", which I thought was just a solder pad, turns out to be a small hook...

X1C5: Fan Connector Socket Came Off Motherboard
The title says it all. My best X1 started to give a "fan error" upon waking up or rebooting. It was sporadic, but was getting worse over the last few days. I opened it up and was rather unhappily presented with the fan plug and socket dangling above the motherboard. It's not even obvious how that ti...

Re: Windows 11 Update Curiosity
Negative, but thanks. I think that there is only one Insider channel in recent months, but all machines were always on the most bleeding-edge option. Never have had a Windows 10 Home machine. Right now I've stumbled on a potential workaround for the Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 requirements, and am burni...

Windows 11 Update Curiosity
I currently have six Thinkpads: three X1C5 machines, two W500 machines, and a T500. All are on the Windows 10 "Insider" program. The Insider program offered Windows 11 several days ago. I expected that the X1 boxes would update OK and expected the older laptops to fail the Secure Boot requirement. A...

I wasn't the one having the problem, so I don't know for sure what he deleted or disabled to successfully avoid the problem. But if you expand the "Task Scheduler Library" item under "Task Scheduler (Local)", most of the entries are fairly self=descriptive. It should be reasonably obvious (famous la...

Re: LF: T61 PC Card Cage
I'm about to take a box of Thinkpad stuff to the hazardous waste site, probably tomorrow. While most is T500/W500 stuff, I see an entire T61. No recollection as to whether it works or not, but I could certainly take it apart enough to scavenge the cage. But I'm anxious to declutter the house and get...

Thank you for the suggestion, but it never got remotely far enough to worry about the OS. The bleedin' machine wouldn't even begin to come up.
It's still working fine after a few days. Maybe it was the proverbial "carbon on the valves."

Re: T500: Halleluyah!
Well, this one has floored me. As per the suggestion from RealBlackStuff, I pulled the HD and DVD, and for good measure the CMOS battery. Didn't (yet) pull the CPU as that's a little more of a nuisance. Upon putting things back one at a time, starting with the CMOS battery and one stick of memory, I...

Thanks for the replies, folks. As per my post, I had tried both battery and AC-only.
I'll pull the memory a little later in the day, and report back if it gives me the mem beepcode. UPDATE: Negative - no change with memory yanked.

Re: T500 Win7 32bit to Win8.1 64bit
A clean install is quite routine. BUT: if you're not using a wired network connection, make sure you've downloaded the network drivers from Lenovo. I don't recall whether Win8.1 has appropriate native drivers. If they do, you're obviously OK. If not, there's nothing more frustrating than being unabl...

T500: "It's Dead, Jim!"
I was sitting with one of my T500 machines on my lap last night, happily working away, and it suddenly went stone dead. X1C Chargers
A month or so ago I purchased a fully-maxed X1C5 - despite the 16:9 screen it's quite a jolt coming from my current four T500 and W500 machines. This guy, as you know, uses a USB-C charger rather than the familiar round tip jobbies used since the Pleistocene Era. Question: In a pinch, would the "dum...

Advice: T500 Screen Replacement
My wife dropped her T500 at just the wrong angle, and there's now a vertical white line top to bottom in the dead center of the screen, maybe an eighth of an inch wide. The rest of the screen image is fine. I assume that the panel is toast - I don't think this could be a loosened cable. Agree? I hav...

T500: LONG Beep at Boot
One of my T500 machines is sporadically (maybe 40-50% of the time) giving a three second beep when restarting, either from a power-up or a wake up from hibernation. Aside from being annoying, the machine comes up and runs normally. Any ideas as to what it's trying to tell me? I haven't found anythin...

Maybe clean the dock slot? Does it misbehave in other operating systems? Not the deck slot - see previous reply. It's a dual-boot machine, and the behavior is similar on the 8.1 partition, aside from the bogus battery being #2 rather than #1. As the light flashes even after power down, unless i tem...

T500 Thinks There's a Second Battery
The yellow "charging" light on my T500 (Win10 x64) has been flashing for a few months with all my batteries, all of which change properly and exhibit no indication of any problem and which work without the yellow light on my W500 (also Win10 x64.) No specific knowledge of this, but: have you checked the Task Scheduler? That's another place nuisance programs sneak into the running system.

What about all of us Core 2 Duo Lovers. Plenty of us use FrankenPads. It depends if they count manufacturing date or raw power? When I read the article, I thought it was referencing a very low-end Atom processor, period. Core 2 Duo is perfectly "safe". Someone correct me if my recollection of the a...

Balderdash! I'm sure most of us have no machines using that extreme low-end CPU; the announcement is completely irrelevant to anyone likely to frequent this forum.
