It's a USB device; I mistakenly thought that the Synaptics device listed on `lsusb` was the touchpad; it was actually the fingerprint reader.
That said, there is no Linux driver for it, nor does Lenovo intend to release one. So much for Linux certification.

Re: My ThinkPad X1 Extreme review
Just got new info, and to answer my own question (see below): ~If you did not order a 2nd SSD from Lenovo, a) Lenovo should have the physical copper connections in place for you to add a 2nd M.2 NVMe "2280" SSD. b) HOWEVER , Lenovo did not include the small screw that holds that 2nd SSD in place, s...

i7 P1 first impressions. Also: why I did not get the Xeon P1
My venerable T61p released its magic blue smoke a few months ago, so it was time to get a new laptop, now that *finally* Lenovo saw the light and released a 15'' laptop without a numeric keypad. My first choice was to get a fully-decked-out P1, with a Xeon processor and 32G of ECC memory (could not ...

The P1 and the X1 Extreme are more like each other than the P[57]* or other X*; put them on a separate group?
The P1 and the X1 Extreme are essentially the same laptop; the two main differences are that the P1 can be configured with a Xeon and ECC memory, and the X1 Extreme has a games-oriented video card. Questions pertaining to the P1 are more likely to also pertain to the X1 Extreme (and vice versa) than...

How is the fingerprint reader connected on a P1?
My guess would have been over USB, just like the camera or the smartcard reader, but it is not showing up in the USB device list. Mine is a model 20MD (i7, the low-res screen).

Re: Check here if your IBM/Lenovo Laptop/Desktop is Linux Certified
Not very useful, at least not in my case. Quite the contrary, actually, they list the Thinkpad P1 as Ubuntu 18.04 certified, but it can't even install properly from the distribution media. There are workarounds (installing 16.04 first, then upgrading), but things like the fingerprint reader or secur...

Re: What OS do you use/recommend for T61
The OS choice is usually mandated by what you use the laptop for and the application software you need to run. If you need software that only exists for Windows, then Windows 7 Pro is your best choice. I'm a software engineer, I don't have my own personal windows support person, and every other mach...

Re: Is it possible to replace the backlight lamp on a T61p?
Yep. Ask xiphmont for an LED backlight kit, and specify your display size and aspect ratio. Then follow his guide at: https://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/thinkpad/led-backlight.shtml You can pm or email him. Although the guide is for X60/61 tablets and non-tablets, I recently did the mod on my 14.1" ...

Is it possible to replace the backlight lamp on a T61p?
My 8+ year old T61p (6457, 15'' 1920x1200 screen) has been growing dimmer, or so it seems. Does the CCFL that provides the backlight indeed grow dimmer with age? If so, is it possible to replace it without replacing the entire LCD?

Re: Giving up and getting a modern Thinkpad
If you like the old school keyboard, but with more modern innards, perhaps the Anniversary ThinkPad might be worth a look. The anniversary TP is garbage. The lobotomized monkeys who currently run Lenovo do not understand that there is a real need for 15'' laptops without the stupid numeric keypad.

They already must have a lot of tooling in place to accommodate all sorts of different layouts for different country options. Why is it so hard to have one more without a numeric keypad? Its not that easy. The different language layouts don´t require a different palmrest. If you want to do a keyboa...

Re: I hate numeric keypads. Am I the only one?
Thinkpads are not consumer kit for that reason they will always have numeric keybads that are standard in accounting. Lenovo have other segments/brands more oriented to the consumer/pro-sumer that don't have the numeric keypad. None with a trackpoint, which is the ONLY reason to buy a Thinkpad, and...

I hate numeric keypads. Am I the only one?
What is it with Lenovo? First they change the keyboard technology to be more like the dreck Apple peddles. Now they don't offer any 15'' models without a numeric keypad. My main issue is that the unit stops being a *laptop* and becomes a *thightop*. Typing on a laptop keyboard is already worse than ...

More than 4G on T61p?
Can the T61p (in particular: 6457-7XX (15'' 1920x1200 screen, T7700 processor) use more than 4G of memory? Normally I would just get a pair of 4G sticks and try them, but they've gotten really expensive (supply and demand, I guess), and I'd rather not blow $200 that I won't be able to use anywhere e...

Which FRU LCD display for T61p (6458-F55)?
I stupidly managed to break my screen on my venerable T61p. Brain-damage, mostly. I suppose they don't want to maintain more than one tooling line per diagonal screen. I hated 16:10 on laptops, and I hate 16:9 even more. My work laptop is an old 4:3 T61, which I'm holding on to despite threats by IT that it's no longer supported and that I should upgrade. I ...

Every time I visit the Lenovo site, it prompts me for feedback. So far, none of my remarks about the lack of non-widescreen options have merited even a reply. Their sales droids, of course, are just telling me "nobody is making them, so it's not like you can go to our competition".

Re: SERIOUSLY confused about displays
Lenovo has become yet another commodity manufacturer of low-quality laptops. The last decent laptops they made was the non-widescreen T61s. I have one of these, and I'll give it up when it finally dies. My hope is that *some* manufacturer by then will have seen the light and decided that there is st...

why are we seeing this decline in screen quality?
Is there a tacit agreement among laptop manufacturers that they all should ship poor quality displays? And what is it with the disappearence of 4x3? Do people do nothing other than watch movies on their laptops? How can anyone get any work done with the reduced vertical space of widescreen displays?...

The fan in my T41p is becoming increasingly loud, so I suspect the bearings (or whatever) are failing. Lenovo's site indicate that this is not a CRU, so there is no way to buy it from them. How do I go about ordering it? I've found several places that seem to carry it, but they don't indicate whethe...

you would need to take out the back panel of the CD to expose the more-or-less standard thin-profile-CD connector. For $10 you can get an adaptor that will convert it to a 3.5'' IDE connector, and then use an IDE-to-USB adaptor, probably another $20. By this time, you've spent $30, plus P&P, plus ti...
