Re: WiFi Keeps disconnecting

Thanks. I have ordered the same daughtercard as the one I've got. I found out on another forum about the BIOS whitelisting of parts. Sneaky sneaky. And apparently even some parts from the same manufacturer that are otherwise identical, won't work unless they're specifically *Lenovo* approved parts. ...

Re: WiFi Keeps disconnecting

I have one of these G50 laptops (mine's a G50-45) and the wi-fi periodically disconnects. I looked in the HMM and there's 5 possible replacement parts: Description FRU Brand WirelessLan_Non_Intel, Ltn NFA335 1x1BN+BT4.0 PCIE M.2 WLAN 20200558 Atheros NFA335 M.2 NGFF Wireless Card QCNFA335 WirelessLa...

T480 keyboard swap

I have a client that bought a T480 with a non-illuminated keyboard, and now wants to buy and swap in a keyboard with the illumination. In the HMM, the swap looks very easy - two screws and the keyboard pops out, then there's a connector to undo. Has anyone actually done this? Online at places like A...

Re: mini displayport not working

Update: I got a friend to bring over his MacBook Pro that has a mini-displayport output, so I could test the adapter. It worked, with his machine. So, I've got an adapter that physically fits, but doesn't work, so I either need a different type, or there's some sort of display driver issue. I could,...

Re: mini displayport not working

Update: I literally thought of the docking station idea, as I was typing the first post. So, I got the docking station, the same HDMI cable, and the larger Displayport adapter that I use with my T520. Put the X230 on the dock, connected it up to the old Samsung TV and hey it works. So the problem mu...

mini displayport not working

Now that I have my X230 working properly (I posted a couple of months ago about its faulty wireless card, now replaced) and a fresh, fully updated install of Windows 10 on it, I decided to buy a cable to convert DisplayPort output to HDMI so I can connect it up to a television. But, I can't seem to ...

Re: [x230] Adventures with Recovery media [Long read]

Update - I got the replacement N6205 card in the mail yesterday. Removed the battery, keyboard, and palm-rest, carefully installed the new card, put everything back together, powered the unit on (with the Win10 install SSD installed) and presto, it booted up (after doing a "hard boot" by holding dow...

Thanks Samveen and RBS for your input! I'm so grateful to this forum, in general, for all the good advice I've found here over the many years that I've had ThinkPads. In fact, I recommend Thinkpads to my friends that are looking for laptops, precisely because of the level of support they have, both ...

Re: [x230] Adventures with Recovery media [Long read]

Well, after all that... the wi-fi card seems to be the culprit. FRU 60Y3253, Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205. I removed it from the machine and then re-tried installing Windows 10. Works fine. Just no wireless. I've ordered another identical wi-fi card and when I get it, I'll try installing it and ho...

Re: [x230] Adventures with Recovery media [Long read]

Hmm. One can't download a plain Windows 7 Pro ISO using the product key, the Microsoft website knows that the key is from a preloaded machine and says you have to use the vendor's product recovery discs. I was going to use a retail disc and then put in the product key, but my retail Win 7 is not Win...

Re: [x230] Adventures with Recovery media [Long read]

Thanks RBS for the Ivyrain suggestion. I didn't really want to mess with the BIOS at that level, but it looks like I'll have to consider it, as resetting the 2.77 bios to the defaults (F9) did not help. My other option will be to try a stock Windows 7 install and then go to Lenovo's site to get all ...

Re: [x230] Adventures with Recovery media [Long read]

I just got a Thinkpad X230 and I'm having that same experience - I'd swapped in an SSD, got the recovery disc set (from the same helpful person you mentioned in your original post), hooked up an external DVD drive and ran the set, only to have it go into that nasty endless reboot at the end. I, too,...

Re: Recovery DVD

Does the first disc have to be a CD? These days, blank CDs actually cost more than DVD's.

Don't bother wasting a DVD, especially a dual layer DVD, on the first boot disc.

Re: recovering data from a dead T60

I'll pull off the parts I can use on the T61 (hard drive, RAM, possibly the keyboard/trackpoint, battery, DVD-RW) and then I guess I'll sell off whatever's left. The new one's a 15 inch model, so the chassis, bezel and screen aren't much use to me as spare parts.

thanks - I checked the original specs and you're correct. I don't know the FRU number because these machines are being sold through IBM as "certified used" equipment - presumably, the network card is either a typo on their ad, or IBM is refurbishing them with their own network cards. I wish I could determine with certainty which component failed, without swapping in new parts (which I don't have). Re: Upgrading T60 hard drive - best way and best software?

Yes, making a set of recovery discs of *just the factory software and settings* is a highly recommended process for all computers built with a recovery partition rather than system discs (which is pretty much all computers nowadays). The instructions are provided with the computer's documentation - ...
