I had this problem and got IBM to fix onsite. I delayed for a while, though, thinking it wasn't a big deal. When they eventually fixed it, there was a ton of dust on my system board. Moral: don't delay in getting the cover fixed -- it is much more than just cosmetic.

To answer my own question, I've had good luck with PortableComponents. Price was about the same as I found going rate to be on eBay. Got a new 9 cell manufactured in November (it's now January). 0 cycles and it's the T43 battery (not the older, lower capacity batteries). I'm pleased. Hope this helps...

My T40's battery life is at about 1.5 hours and I'd like to do something about it. I'd rather not pay $179 to Lenovo, but all I can find on eBay are third-party batteries for whom quality has got to be an open question. Anyone know of reputable places from which to get Lenovo batteries? Thanks!

I just finished my first year of law school and I'd have to say that the T40 was hands down the most common laptop among first year students.
