Re: Grumpy Old Man Wonders: Why do new Thinkpads need updates right out of the box??

But I've also been waiting over 5 years now to see a new model of Thinkpad that I could imagine using. Originally I was holding out for a classic keyboard, but I was disappointed by the CPU and screen of the Anniversary T25, and there hasn't been anything since. The new X1 Extreme Gen 4 and P1 mach...

Re: Current models with 16:10 screens?

To add to the list on The Verge, the newest X1 Extreme Gen 4 and P1 Gen 4 machines have 16" diagonal screens and are both 16:10, with two choices of screens: WQUXGA (3840 x 2400) IPS WQXGA (2560 x 1600) IPS And the X1 Carbon Tablet 3rd Gen has a 13" diagonal 3:2 screen: QHD+ (3000 x 2000) IPS All th...

Pkiff...it's not just Lenovo laptops...My girlfriend recently plunked down 80k for a brand new 2022 Dodge Ram pickup...almost every bell and whistle included...On the day she picked it up, and before she left the dealer's lot, a "software upgrade" was required to allow some of the "features" to fun...

Grumpy Old Man Wonders: Why do new Thinkpads need updates right out of the box??

I guess I have reached the grumpy old man stage of computer use. I bought a couple new Thinkpads over the past month - including one of the fancy new X1 Extreme Gen 4's and a second X1 Tablet Gen 3. In both cases, I have had to spend time updating the machines as soon as I opened them up and pulled ...

X1 Tablet Gen 3 Good Deal from Lenovo Black Friday Sale

Just a heads up to those who may be interested. Lenovo appears to have a pretty good deal on right now for Thinkpad X1 Tablet Gen 3 as part of their Black Friday sale offerings. These units have been unavailable in some countries for some time. The prices below are as of today for a base config with...

Re: WTB: 2 Keyboards VG Condition X220/T420/T520/W520

Sent a PM reply to theterminator93. Thanks for the suggestion, kfzhu1229. I have to admit that I don't have any experience swapping out key switches on Thinkpad keyboards - and am not too excited with the prospect of doing so. I have replaced a couple key caps here and there, but that's about it. I'...

WTB: 2 Keyboards VG Condition X220/T420/T520/W520

I'm looking for one or two Very Good condition keyboards from the **10/**20 series. I intend to use them to replace the worn out internal keyboards in two external USB Thinkpad SK-8855 keyboard units - assuming I can get them apart without breaking them! I think I can use any of the keyboards for th...

Re: 701C plastic restoration

And a totally unrelated question to coatings, but does anyone know how to make a 64mb RAM module work in the 701? I remember reading you either needed a special BIOS or special driver, though I don't recall exactly what. I might be mistaken, but I think that you can only get a 64MB module to work i...

Re: 701C plastic restoration

I have a couple 701's that I also want to do some work on, and I also wondered about what to do with the cases. Fellow board member Cooler22 did some testing with paints and plastics back in 2017, and even posted some 3D printer files I think: 701c Repainting? And in that thread, you'll find links t...

Re: BIOS configuration Security & Privacy

Got it. That makes sense. And thanks to you @cadillacmike68 for the tips. I'm always hesitant to fiddle with hard drive passwords once I have them working - I've had various issues trying to activate self-encrypting SSD drives with ATA- or BIOS level drive passwords. I've even managed to fully brick...

...However, if you set them all to be the same as the power-on password, you will only need to enter it once (convenience feature). OMG, I did not know this! Re: 4 Month Shipping delays for X1 Extreme and P1 Gen 4?

Yeah, that is all sound advice. Up until recently, I always used to wait several years for "new" models and pick them up used when they started to flood the market at the end of corporate leases and warranties. Maybe spending so much time on my computers at home has somehow made me more aware of and...

4 Month Shipping delays for X1 Extreme and P1 Gen 4?

Does anyone have any inside news or gossip about shipping delays for some of the new high-end 16:10 Thinkpads? My W520 is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I've been waiting for a couple years for 16:10 screens to finally come back around. So now I'm considering picking up one of these fancy new ...

An unofficial leak showing upcoming (unannounced/unreleased) X1 Extreme Gen 4 external look only, with 16:10 aspect ratio LCD and Intel CPU. Just to clarify, that leak is about the X1 Carbon Extreme Gen 4, not an X1 Carbon Tablet variant or X12 detachable. By the time I got to the site, the video h...

Re: WTB - UltraBay 2000 Portable Drive Bay

Does anyone have the drivers floppy for the PCMCIA adapter? I bought one of these (just the regular version, not 2000) NOS a while back, but the floppy had deteriorated so much that I can't get the needed drivers off it... I think then you're looking for drivers for the generic "Portable Drive Bay"...

Re: 2.88 floppy in 770? Or UltraBay to UB-II adapter, perhaps?

Just found the "Thinkpad 760 Ultrabay Options Tray for Selectadock III" in my basement. It looks like it does actually do what you want: allows you to install a standard Ultrabay floppy drive into the Ultrabay II slot of the SelectaDock III. The boxed version comes with a choice of different front b...

Re: 2.88 floppy in 770? Or UltraBay to UB-II adapter, perhaps?

Alternatively / tangentially-related, ThinkWiki claims that an UltraBay to UltraBay-II Adapter exists (and is not to be confused with the UltraBay II Hard Drive Adapter !), which -- if true -- would mean one wouldn't have to hack apart a 770 floppy drive to accomplish this. Since UB-II modules are ...

Re: WTB: UltraBay II CD or DVD drive (for TP 770 series)

[....] You should probably Google and read up on RPC-I vs. RPC-II DVD drives. The official IBM FRU drives for these machines, being first-generation DVD drives, were RPC-I. So the DVD drive itself did no region enforcement...that was ALL done in software. Later RPC-II drives **DID** enforce region ...

Does UJDA750 interchange with UJDA740, 760 and 770 for this application? It depends if you want to swap your faceplate as well as your drive. Any of those models should be able to connect to the internal drive connector inside your caddy - assuming that you started with a M a t s u s h i t a SR-817...

But the idea that the courts prevented them from presenting evidence that would prove their case seems very very fishy to me! Well, SCOTUS didn't want to take the Texas case. It was dismissed on procedural grounds. This was arguably the most important case that side had. OMG, you're kidding me. Tha...

Seriously, if there really is "evidence" that they could not present, then why didn't they present it to the court of public opinion? I would take a look at it. Others would love to see it, I'm sure. We've been waiting on all this supposed evidence since November. Following up on my own post. My in...
