1) In the BIOS, you'll need to disable the pre-desktop area if you intend to remove the service partition. Then, when you install Ubuntu, tell the installer you want to repartition the drive. OR you could use one of the graphical partition programs from the Live CD portion of the install media. As I...

The key combos are more likely the result of the fact that you're pressing too many of certain types of keys at once. This triggers a beep on all Windows platforms, there is a thread elsewhere that describes how to tell Windows to stop doing that. I think part of the problem with the beep is that it...

Frankly, I had some issues with WMP11 interfering with other video applications, so I rolled back to WMP10. O' 'coss, I didn't notice any problems at all until I was tweaking around with services trying to shut down the useless WMP services for broadcasting your playlist, so I can blame myself for t...

My GPU usually hangs around 60-65 when I'm not doing a whole heck of a lot, and the fan does run at 3000 or more RPM's when it's running, which is prolly part of the problem - the fan shuts all the way off when it's done with a cooling everything below a threshold. My graphics card is an ATI, and AT...

If you're using Firefox, you'll have to manually install the CSS plugin. There's a thread on using CSS 7 with Firefox 2 and miscellaneous discussion about CSS 8. Internet Explorer should just work "out-of-the-box."

PC Linux OS , despite it's unoriginal name, is another good Linux for people who like full GUI, although it only has 32-bit releases right now. Also, at the time of this post, the web site appears to be down. Like (k)Ubuntu, the installation media is also a live demo CD. The site, when it goes back...

You can disable the XP indexing service in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services; look for the "Indexing Service", right click, stop the service and set it to "Manual" or "Disabled" to prevent XP from starting it back up on the next reboot. You can also disable the service on a per-disk ...

svchost.exe is responsible for a number of networking or related services in Windows; some of which are necessary and some which home users might not need. However, aside from the plethora of services taking up little chunks of memory, I have never seen it munch up CPU time. However, there are sever...
