No more TRIM issues. Is this silly? *PICS*

So, I have a ThinkPad T43... 1) I don't want to deal with a regular HDD in Bay 0. I don't like the slow access, the noise, or the chance of failure. 2) I can't go without a drive in Bay 0, as the system would hang for 30 seconds on each boot. 3) If I want a regular SATA drive in the Bay 0, I can cut...

Re: New SSD opt. for T4x : mSATA-to-IDE adapter ST663FD9 *PICS*

Possible WARNING for those using an adapter and SSD in the T43's main drive bay. It looks like the default in the latest Linux kernel builds and/or in some distributions is to force TRIM on, even if your system won't work with it. Quick background info: OK, I've had luck with non-SandForce drives on...

Re: T43 up grade to SSD?

I've got a T43 with a 40 Gb HD, is it possible to put a SSD into this machine or am I wasting my time? I have two SSDs in my ThinkPad T43! The easiest way to add one is with a PATA to SATA adapter. The more-difficult way involves soldering a SATA connector to the logic board. I've used at least 4 P...

I never got IR to work, so I just disabled it in BIOS. I've never once used it, so "not having it" is better than a yellow mark in Device Manager.

T43, UltraNav, SynTP.sys and Windows 10 build 10547

Just a heads up about Windows 10 if you're set up to receive "Insider" builds; the SynTP.sys provided by Lenovo (and automatically installed in Windows 10) doesn't play well with the latest build of 10547 from this past weekend. The version of SynTP.sys provided by Lenovo is version 16.2.19.7, from ...

Hotkeys work. On-screen volume control, WiFi and Bluetooth toggles, etc.

Power Manager seems to work. It even put that ugly battery meter on the taskbar.

Windows 10 on the T43 - Nice!

I've been running the final build of Windows 10 on my T43, and it so far has been working well. Even the fingerprint scanner works! Re: New SSD opt. for T4x : mSATA-to-IDE adapter ST663FD9 *P

Thanks Xenomorph. But, why can't I install the OS directly to the SSD? The whole preinstall and clone could be difficult if HDD is bad. I don't install directly to the SSD because of TRIM . During install, Windows will run TRIM on the drive (which is known to possibly cause problems) - and you have...

Re: New SSD opt. for T4x : mSATA-to-IDE adapter ST663FD9 *P

I thought the TRIM issue wasn't so much an issue of the mSATA to PATA bridge not supporting or working with it, but the *double* bridge setup in systems like the T43. I.e.: the "SATA to PATA to SATA" double-bridge caused the issues with TRIM. With the Marvell drive I'm using now (Crucial M500), it s...

Re: New SSD opt. for T4x : mSATA-to-IDE adapter ST663FD9 *P

For my setup, it's sorta simple. 1) install Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to the HDD in your T43 2) ensure TRIM is disabled (run "fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1") 3) get a nice mSATA SSD and mSATA to PATA adapter. I got this mSATA to PATA adapter, $25: http://www.shopaddonics.com/itemdesc.asp?...

Re: New SSD opt. for T4x : mSATA-to-IDE adapter ST663FD9 *P

One thing that may be of note regarding the SSD I am using; it is already a very slow SSD, even when not in an old T43. Even in a modern 2014 system on a dedicated SATA III/6.0Gb controller, the drive is only rated for up to 130 MB/sec write speed. That is sub SATA I performance. It is also only rat...

I've been trying to stress this SSD more in my T43. After about ~300 GB of writes to the 120GB SSD, and with it 99% full, I ran a benchmark again. http://i.imgur.com/eb6QBmv.png Random write performance did take a bit of a hit. I cleared off the drive again, let it sit idle for a while, power cycled...

For one, SLC drives do not require garbage collection to begin with. I'll leave you with that. SLC cost a ton, and almost no consumer drives use it. ($1200 for this 120GB SLC SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227443) Consumer drives use MLC, and some manufacturers (such ...

OWC likes to push the idea that letting the SSD's firmware and chipset deal with garbage collection works just as well (if not better) than using OS's TRIM: http://blog.macsales.com/11051-to-trim-or-not-to-trim-owc-has-the-answer The SSD solution for my T43 was a $25 PATA adapter and a $80 mSATA SSD...

Re: ThinkPad T43 and Windows 8

Do bear one thing in mind: If you're using an unconverted T43, the whole concept of adapter+SSD may or may not work, and if it does work it will return weaker results than it would on a comparable T42/p. The only way to run an SSD in a T43/p or R52 is to SATA-mod it. Previous T4x machines are a who...

OK, I just got the Crucial M500 drive (Marvell chipset). Windows 8 install seemed to finish. It did not freeze up like with the SandForce drive, but performance was bad after install. I think I have this stuff figured out. With any SSD on the T43 using the PATA to SATA adapter, you must disable TRIM...

I'm not going to do a SATA mod. I've replaced the LCD (I originally got the T43 with a smashed 1400x1050, and put in a new 1024x768), I've also swapped out the heatsink, fan, CPU (2.0 to 2.13 GHz), WiFi card (802.11n), RAM, etc. In all instances it was a simple as "unplug old, plug in new". The WiFi...

Was your Win7 test in the desktop (and therefore the problem must be the SSD and not the T43) ? There have been posts in various forums on the internet that suggest (usually erroneously) that one *must* disable Trim in order for some SSDs to work without problems. That may solve the Win7 / Win8 loc...

Re: ThinkPad T43 and Windows 8

It most certainly will give a more-than-noticeable bump...I'm running an Intel X-25E in my T43p and it's simply amazing. Do be careful with the choice of SSD, though, since there is no AHCI and hence no TRIM on T43/p...an older Intel drive is likely your best bet, and anything SF-based is a "no-no"...
