Re: Any reason to keep both a 770z and T23?
It's time to thin out the ThinkPad shelf again, and I think the 770z is the one that should go, as I also have a T23, and both have the same multiple OSes installed - DOS, Win95 through XP. If I remember correctly, the only reason to keep the 770z might be that it has sound in DOS, while the T23 do...

Video cable would have to be for the same resolution/screen size on both machines.
No clue about the speakers.
Good luck.

Re: Dead T42p
It's sad that the T42p is SO flawed, being the "top" of the series. I have a T42 and a T43 un working order, but this laptop was difficult to find and I want it to work, as I wrote earlier, they are scarce in this parte of the Globe. Truth be told, the entire T4x generation is flawed in a variety o...

Now I just need to figure out how to get working wifi and working hotkey software at the same time, and I'll be able to get this T42 up and running again.
What's the issue with hotkeys and wireless ?

Re: Issues with restoring original factory software to a t42
This isn't a boot error. It's the recovery software erroring out. I understood that the first time around. And I have confirmed with experimentation that the recovery process works perfectly if the hard drive has an IBM FRU# on it. They don't work with generic hard drives bought off of Ebay. With a...

Re: Internet Speed Test, who can you believe?
Making up a fibre optic patch cable from scratch, including terminating both ends is far simpler with copper. I woudn't even know where to start with building my own fibre optic patch cable. Well, I could teach a blind monkey to splice fiber... :D ...wouldn't try the same when it comes to splicing ...

I'm in telecoms now and copper is cheaper, Definitely. easier to terminate Debatable. less problem if there is a break or fault Disagree. easier to work with, Strongly disagree. more commonly understood Definitely and meets the technical requirement of the service I'm paying for. No dispute there.

Re: Internet Speed Test, who can you believe?
I suspect the last 30 metres are copper due to the sharp turns around walls and around corners. That should make absolutely no difference whatsoever. Take it from someone who earned his retirement from telecom industry a couple of years ago. Fiber doesn't care about the bends any more than copper d...

I wanted to set up a T42 with the original factory software for an authentic vintage experience. It hasn't gone well. Advice welcome. The first road block was that the restore disks do not work with generic hard disks. It has to have the right firmware, or the restore process fails at the point of ...

The above were all measured using the Vodafone Gigabox Sh!tbox router. I just tested my wi-fi connection using some of the tests you've linked, and am getting pretty constant results (with a crap 6205N card) on most of them, so I'd say that your router could be at fault. It sends out only ONE SSID ...

Re: Internet Speed Test, who can you believe?
Once you start getting faster connection speeds, the commercial speed test websites become less reliable. This. Yesterday I got FTTH (Fibre To The House) installed from Vodafone, with 500/50 Mbps (Down/Up). I tested the above with my T440p (W7 Pro/SP1, Intel AC-7260 wifi-card) on the kitchen table....

Does anyone know why the T43 KBs had separate FRUs and if they can be used interchangeably with KBs from the earlier T4x laptops? Why ? Just one of a zillion IBM's little head scratchers... :D All T4x series keyboards can be used interchangeably, as long as the machine size - 14" vs. 15" - matches.

I've never tried that swing but presume it's doable.
The real question is whether the button is faulty, or its connection to the board.
My path would probably be to swap all the other keys from one keyboard to the other if possible...

Is this me though? No it's not (just you). Systems with a "p" designation - going back to A20p - were always considered to be the "top shelf" offerings. Now, how collectible will they be in the future is not something I can predict. "End of era" units such as A31p, T43p and T60p may become interest...

how's reliability on the t23? i've wanted to get one but am yet to find one. ideally an sxga+ equipped one would be nice but god knows how hard to find that would be. Well, the newest T23 is over two decades old at this point so...I'd look at them as a ticking time bombs, one and all. With that bei...

Albeit I still can't figure why if I put a jack whose wire is cut and disconnected from everything into my A31's power connector I can turn on the computer only after dozens of tries, while if I pull it out I can turn on the machine succesfully from the battery every time I try to. Re: IBM Thinkpad 240 - boot from USB or virtual drive via USB?
Try removing your SSD, then install it in another computer and install a bootable OS (Win98) onto that SSD. Then put it back on the Thinkpad 240. That should be bootable. I think Win98 has a DOS mode. I haven't tried this though! So no guarantees. The problem here will be finding another PC that wi...

Welcome to the forum! R30 witl take 1GB of RAM (2x512), presuming that there are two working slots. It will also read any SSD at speeds below PATA - a problem with all ThinkPads from this era - so you'd be wasting your money. A 7200 spinning drive is the best solution for these ancient systems. Ah.. the Core Duo vs Core 2 Duo ..thanks for the reminder. Those CPUs always seemed confusing to me. Irregardless.. the T60 limited to 3GB ram could be a performance factor with W7/32. I probably could try Win7/32 (to take advantage of TRIM for my recently installed 1TB SSD) ..but everything runs q...

I'd obviously prefer a 7200rpm drive, and it can't be larger than 80GB. Long story short, it's NOT going into a PC of any kind...

Re: Win7--->Win10 evidently solved a bad problem with T60
You're operating Win10 on a T60? !!! I am skeptical to even try Win7. I thought T60s were only 32bit and limited to 3GB under Windows. If the processor is a Core Duo (T2***) yes, it's 32-bit. Core 2 Duos (T5***, T7***) are 64-bit. CPUs can be upgraded when a newer BIOS is installed. Personally, I w...
